MATCHBOX Restoration No 6c Euclid Quarry Truck 1963

  • One of my subscribers named Steve Burrows, emailed me saying that he had a Matchbox truck which he wished to send to me to be restored. He had found it buried in a forest behind his house. He lives in Wales, and kindly mailed it to me free of charge, from half way around the world!
I am using a new technique to join axle ends together in this video. My inspiration came from youtuber "Diecast Show Customs".

I have that Euclid truck, I paid a dollar for mine and sanded it down and painted it lime green including the center of the wheels. Those trucks were built 25 miles from where I live. Beautiful restoration.

Amazing transformation! I was born in 64 as well. Wish I could be rejuvenated like that. I too look like I’ve been buried in a forest for decades, but I’m betting it’s gonna take more than some sanding paint and glue to do the job.

I had that model when I was a kid. Ran the wheels wobbly.
You need to put the drill bit further into the drill chuck so the drill bit doesn't flex and run off center.

Great job Marty! Reforming and re-drilling the broken hinge on the tipper body is a brilliant repair. I will have to revisit my Matchbox K11 Fordson Tractor and trailer and do the same. I repaired the tipper by glueing a piece of metal next to the broken hinge to put the pivot pin through - but I'm not happy with it as a repair.
I was strolling through ebay, when i found the K11 set going for very cheap: tipper body missing off trailer, all tyres missing, and the trailer towing eye missing. Steering wheel bent. Later, a job lot of tipper bodies came up for sale: one of which was the correct one. I got this and sold on the other tipper bodies I did not need. Repro tyres and a towing eye got the set coupled up again and rolling. I used a rivet nail for the hinge too. Carefully straightened the steering wheel, and another Matchbox model was saved. Probably ended up spending more on it, than if I had bought a different K11 set in better condition.

Great work! You give these mass produced toys the value they deserve. The design work you reveal in the tear down is so surprising. These were such desirable, pocketable and inexpensive toys and they survived a hard life, in most cases. It would be fun to remake the little yellow boxes they came in too.
The most amazing Lesney Matchbox toys moments included the masses of them donated to Blue Peter appeals. They raised huge sums of money. I feel like collecting some just because they are worthy of huge respect. Thank you for recreating that box fresh moment we got when we tipped our latest bijou toy out of its tiny yellow box and loved it like a friend. Your channel is full of lovely nostalgic surprises.

My collection has been lost for many years. Watching your show has brought back so many great memories. I like telling my wife which cars and trucks you have restored that were in my collection. My first Matchbox was the army half track my grandmother gave me in about 1964. Thank you so much for restoring these wonderful memories. Wishing all the best from Dallas, Texas. Robert.

Surprised more of it didn't just fall apart. Two rust removal systems I have seen used on restoring large hand tools, an over night soak in vinegar and a product we have in the USA called PB Blaster. PB's is a penetrating oil in a spray can, it has worked well for me on removing bolts on car engines.

I use vinegar around the garage for rust removal. but how do you prevent flash rust from forming afterwards?

G'day Marty, FYI my "Royal Langnickel 20/0" brushes arrived today. Very nice brushes I wish I had them years ago. I also agree with two other viewers. Flux and a good cleaning will help the solder flow and yes the rust expansion is what cracked those wheels. Great job as usual mate. Tom USA.

+++ Agree, vinegar bath overnight really breaks down rust . Plus it is a mild acid and will give a nice etch on the pot metal body for paint adhesion :)

I'm amazed that the truck was found in Wales, because when I was about nine years old I found a very similar one buried in a hedge near my grandmother's house. I showed it to my mother and she immediately recognised it - it had been hers, and she remembered losing in the hedge thirty-five years earlier.

@@MartysMatchboxMakeovers - This was BETTER than I expected! You may not think the end result "perfect" but I believe that it would take some pretty careful examination to determine that the end result was actually a restoration. Masterful! I enjoyed the process so much that I shall indulge in a forbidden third dose of nicotine while I watch the video for the second time (don't feel guilty, I don't). I am also consistently amused by your choice of reading material.........................Thanks for taking us along for the ride and thanks to 'Steve Burrows" (!) for making it possible.
