Hi guys my name is Brion and I checked this out. It is the marked links on the chain that are the important not so much the timing marks. The cam has variable timing so this throws off the marks. This is ( VVT-I ) Variable valve timing and it moves as the engine is running. Hope this helps you folks :)
Rotate both cams to the inside of the engine, set the marks on their position and put the tensioner in you will see the marks on the sprockets will be in one line
Markings are not 100% accurate. So therefore you move cam 1 over 1 tooth and put timing chain on and move cam 1 back so tensioner is able to take slackness off.
there is a mark that says Ex on the exhaust sprocket it should line up with the DOT on the intake sprocket even if you have to turn the intake cam or the exhaust cam.
as long as all the timing marks line up with the colored links dont worry about the other marks. The vvt cam gear changes that while the engine is running.Variable valve timing
+Marvin Santiago he must have commented on the wrong comment. There is some tool on here saying timing chains never stretch and should never be replaced.
hey man, what ended up being the solution to this? I have to fix my pistons soon and i need to make sure i get my timing right when i put everything back together
hi.. did u had a problem setting the timing on ur celica?? im running with the same problem this guy had... but i can't get a straight answer on how to set it right...

according to professor MCcuistian you need to first align the camshaft then crank shaft because the cams rotation circle is half the cranks rotation circle.
First of all check your number 4 valve cylinder position. Then will find out your new chain different or your sprocket. Let me know as soon as possible i am ready to help.
I just replaced my timing chain on a 2006 corolla and it doesn't want to start. The engine spins but it just makes a whining sound and doesn't even sound like the engine is turning over.
+Fucknuts have you ever seen how much adjustability is given for motocross bikes? The chains start out super tight and there is like 2" you can adjust back to keep tension. Chains stretching is imperative. If you can design and manufacture one that doesn't stretch you've defied science. Ever heard of the modulus of elasticity? Creep? Fatigue? You clearly have no knowledge of materials.
+MeltingRubberZ28 - This is a TIMING CHAIN, not a bike or motorcross chain...totally different. Timing chains are good for the life of a car which can be 150k miles and much more. Bike/motorcycle chains are good for 25k if you're lucky.
Timing guards wear out because there are plastic which causes slack in the chain and the links can stretch, its not guareentee 4 life, it just last longer than a rubber belt, vehicles are a $$$ making buisness, nothing is made to last 4 life, sorry to break balls, to guareentee your own engine you should change out at a certain time to prevent your vehicle from being on offersup for $500 obo

That’s the simple and easy way

Looks good. Once you set the chain tensioner, will tighten up.
You gotta roll the intake cam counter clockwise until the chain fits the exhaust cam sprocket. Keep all the slack in the chain on the tensioner side.
yup
Did you make sure that the cam gear for the intake side is unlocked for VVTI?
You must unlock the cam shaft variable sprocket. Then it will work.
You need to take out the guides out and put back after chain is back in its place
that crank marking did not look lined up correctly
is it new chain or old ? 2nd thing is your shaft on right order. 3rd did u release the tensioner after instoll everything .
It's because of the VVT-I, it should align once you start the engine and the VVTI changest the valve timing and therefore the cam degree.
you would be a dumb ass not change the chain they do have wear on it
+Todd Ball where did I say not to change the chain???
+Marvin Santiago he must have commented on the wrong comment. There is some tool on here saying timing chains never stretch and should never be replaced.
+MeltingRubberZ28 Lol! I understand, an for the tool saying that, chains not only stretch they also wear out if not replaced timely
ttoomm1987
Did you get your timing chain line up? I know it it old video, how did you manage to get the timing chain tension?
So ttoomm did you ever fix it?
The chain is loose because the side cover with the timing chain tensioner wasn't installed back yet.
thanks for your help and support my work
there is 2 mark on that left sprocket try to align it on the other mark im sure thats where u made a mistake.
This off personal experience did get an oem chain cause I had an after market one an had the same problem

Use the fucking colored links on the chain odiot

check old chains link count it is it same. i think your new chain short .

+Duane Peal - Why the hell would you replace a timing CHAIN?
+Eric Grimme - No, the chains don't "stretch."
+Eric Grimme - When was the last time you stretched steel? You should change your name to numbnuts...

Watch out !!! Its ain't same as 4afe , incorrect timing position will destroy engine!!

make videos from start to finish! there's a lot of people that doesn't have a lot of knowledge on mechanic s.step by step.not to long, thanks.
rotate both together then slip it on the tooth. I hate these things. just like the dodge 2.5 POS and with 6 cyl but what ev
telugu explaination want
Rotat it 360 og will work.
you using wrong chain
