Love that Gang of Youths are finally getting the international attention they deserve! Go Farther In Lightness is one of the best Australian indie rock albums of the past decade.
"Angel in real time" was actually one of my most anticipated albums of 2022 especially after the singles pre album release from it just blew me away (Triple J play Gang of Youths often) and yeah the album didn't let me down. Definitely a deserved AOTY contender for me, it's also an album that would sound incredible live
A friend introduced me to Gang Of Youths a few months back, and they’re quickly becoming one of my favorite bands. These guys prove that rock n’ roll can still be a powerful artistic statement. Incredible album, incredible band.
This is the first time I've heard of this band I'm still letting this album sink in for me, but I will say "in the wake of your leave" is a song of the year contender for me. Phenomenal song.
Though I did prefer Go Farther in Lightness, this album is fantastic and Gang of Youths is currently one of my absolute favorite bands right now. Their music has helped me immensely through some extremely tough times and a good amount of their songs bring me to tears. They're also amazing live - saw them at Brooklyn Steel a couple of months back. I want them to get more attention, they deserve every ounce of it.
Well, colour me intrigued! I’ve been privy to the hype around Gang of Youths since Let Me Down Easy ruled Australian mainstream radio in 2017 and 2018 but never had the chance to check them out properly. Will definitely try to check this out when I can, your description of the sonic pallet seems right up my alley!
you are right -this is potentially album of the year - it hit me on first listen - never wondered throughout the listen - great review as well full of passion and appreciation
Man I am so excited to check this out based on this review! That's why I love this channel .. you've introduced me to such amazing music over the years. Thanks mark!
This review made me super curious to check out this album and wow it was incredible! While some other albums you've recommended don't click with me the same way this one absolutely did and I am looking forward to checking out their other work!
Gangs of Youth has gotten our attention with a highly emphatic experience with some of the most lively, thrilling, feel good global indie rock album for the last decade. Forbearance, brothers father of the century are easily some of the best songs I’ve heard all year.
Really glad you loved this and that this band is getting more attention, I've been a big fan since Go Farther In Lightness and while I don't think this album is quite as good as that one it certainly didn't disappoint
This was my intro to Gang of Youths... and I was *BLOWN AWAY* (and somehow Go Farther In Lightness was even *better*). The fusion of breakbeat-esque percussion and heavenly strings just RAISE it up to transendence on sound alone (most notable on 'the kingdom is within you', of course). And it's also pretty touching lyrically. I think this is a lock-in for my AOTY runner-up (behind Fickle Friends). I don't see any other album beating this one for that spot. I have now got a new favourite band. Also, I felt The National vibes mostly on 'the man himself'; that song heavily reminded me of 'Bloodbuzz Ohio'.
Bizzarely enough, me seeing one of this album's songs on Spotify's Rock This playlist alongside MGK and RHCP... yeah, I was shocked! I am all the more grateful for that because I knew about this review for a while, but never felt like checking out the record. Color me impressed because this is MY kind of indie rock! Sort of like Elbow meets U2, with a little bit of Midnight Oil thrown in for good measure.
This really scratches a few of those early to mid 2010's indie itches for me. Hell, Angel of 8th Ave. Gives me vibes of Holy by Frightened Rabbit, and that's only a positive in my eyes~ ❤️
"the angel of 8th ave." is my song of the year and this is coming from someone who never heard of this band before this album. I doubt I'll hear a song as good as it for the rest of the year.. Before I heard it my song of 2022 was Basketball Shoes by Black Country, New Road. The whole album is great though and a new band for me to dive into.
It's funny, I never liked any of U2s music even when trying so hard to like their music. But Gang of Youths has hit me right in the feelings and worded my feelings where I did not know how to do so.
Good review and a good record, but just like with their last 2 albums, I'm not sure I'm too much into it. Could grow on me, but right now I won't give reaction stronger than "it's good, ig"
I checked out this album after hearing Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen mention it on the Indiecast, an indie music-centric podcast. It wasn't really my thing honestly, but I can respect why some people are on board with this sound. Overall, I thought the songwriting was solid across the board, but in terms of production, I feel like it does a bit too much in terms of all the different layers. Also, the songs felt really long and tedious to me, even some of the hooks were good.
I’m so shocked to see spectrum pulse with the same exact brand and set up to review albums as he did over a decade ago, absolutely no growth whatsoever, but I’m just like wow to have the exact carbon copy as his videos years ago, as someone who used to watch spectrum pulse all the time and to see his recent uploads still the exact same quality and setup in his videos so strange
If you think I haven't changed in the course of nine years, I think you might be missing plenty - no scores, better lighting, better camera, better microphone, considerably better analysis, and better presence behind the camera. Also, I've moved twice in nine years.
While I have my own bone to pick with Marky Mark regarding the abandoning of "Criminal Limit", he does excellent music analysis, and visual antics would add nothing of value.

Achilles Come Down ALONE is a masterpiece. That song is the emotional equivalent of being struck by lightning.

Honestly one of the few bands on triple j that I like

great aren't they - i will review them later this month
This is the first time I've heard of this band
I'm still letting this album sink in for me, but I will say "in the wake of your leave" is a song of the year contender for me. Phenomenal song.
great new release - i also review albums

Love you putting the spotlight on these blokes Mark! Much love from Australia
Man, Brothers almost made me cry mid album and that RARELY happens, great review as always 👍
you are right -this is potentially album of the year - it hit me on first listen - never wondered throughout the listen - great review as well full of passion and appreciation
definitely gonna be checking this out👀
wonderful review!

This is one of the most revisitable albums I've heard this year, thank you for suggesting it Mark

Glad you enjoyed listening to this.
What a great review.
Keep it up.
wow i was in the middle of looking for an album to liston to then this uploaded
a dash of frank turner in the mix? great writing? guess i will be making some room for this one!

They've been playing Angel of 8th Avenue and In the Wake of Your Leave on Australia's Triple M which is our biggest rock radio station
This really scratches a few of those early to mid 2010's indie itches for me.

Huge in Australia! glad they're getting international acclaim
You gonna cover Multitude by Stromae most likely in On The Pulse or even it’s own review which I highly doubt
It's funny, I never liked any of U2s music even when trying so hard to like their music. But Gang of Youths has hit me right in the feelings and worded my feelings where I did not know how to do so.
This is an album of the year contender along with Tear For Fears, Black Country New Road, and Marillion.
that new Tears For Fears record suprised me with how good it was
I only heard of Gang of Youths through tiktok but dang it, I’m glad I did, this album is gorgeous
Good review and a good record, but just like with their last 2 albums, I'm not sure I'm too much into it. Could grow on me, but right now I won't give reaction stronger than "it's good, ig"
this is my favorite album of the year!!!
Yesss, a sick Aussie group. Now if we get a onefour and gang of youths track🤔🤔🤔
Lol as a New Zealander I did laugh at Mark absolutely butchering the pronunciation of 'Maori'.
Of course he did. Then again, Todd In The Shadows also munted that word back in the day.
👍
Their first two albums are way better, but i still like this one

Gang of Youths is just the Springsteenfication of The National
