This album was a couple year ahead of its time. TSLAMP and She Works out Too Much literally describe the reality of society now in 2023. Ik it was similar back in 2018 when the album came out, but man those songs aged well
Everyone's always hating on their self titled album but it's honestly really good. Definitely very unconventional and goofy, but super solid. I really enjoy it a lot.
She works out too much seems to actually be about a guy not able to keep up with his GFs social media not that they are actually working out. The relationship didn't work because of something so small like not liking her every selfie etc.
Love love love this album, more mature and melancholy MGMT but still classically sugary-psych stuff with light synths and beautifully corny and sometimes-morbid, weird lyrics. Got some insanely catchy tunes on this which are incredible and amazing arrangements and production that makes it all the more interesting, as well as fun, to listen to!
I hadn't heard of MGMT before this record was released, and I have to say, this album is truly unique. Even coming off the first track, I knew I was in for something I had never heard before. I've always been a rock/alternative/folk type guy and whatnot, but this album changed the way I view music. A wonderful album that is truly imaginative and succeeds in taking you out of reality. solid 9/10.
I'd rather not see any more crappy, half-assed videos badly attempting to debate left-of-center things he doesn't like, thank you very much. (Yes, I know that was only one type of video he was making on that channel, but still. They weren't very good.)
MGMT really have left their stamp on neo-psychedelia and this album confirms that. If I even found MGMT as a departure from their usually concise composition, felt like the coy and understated retreading of their inspirations and whimsy on this album is the best they've done. I'd say with some degree of certainty that MGMT will go down as one of my all-time favorite music acts.
I think she works out too much is a metaphor about how he never worked out his own problems in the relationship, not just physically. I think the song is very original and gives a "rio by Duran Duran but horror," sense to it. its ultimately my favorite mgmt song right now
This is my favorite album of the year so far. I've been meaning to get into Pom Pom. I jam out to Dedicated to Bobby Jameson on the regular. Is that Underoath's They're Only Chasing Safety on the bottom left and Brand New's Daisy on the top right?
as a huge mgmt fan i wasn't sure about some of the songs at first because they felt aggressively 80s, but i found myself with most of them stuck in my head at various points lately. The songs i was wary of are so much bigger than i initially thought, especially reffering to me and michael and TSLAMP. James definitely my favorite non-single song on the album! It's beautiful, heartwarming, dancy and mesmirizing IMO. 9
Great video Anthony! I really liked it, but I feel that when you went onto that 3 minute tangent about how this album is an example of the white race being superior kinda creeped me out. Keep up the good work!
Lil Snippy Tippy yeah I'm not going to lie, the point where he started hailing Hitler and got the Nazi flag out was a bit strange. Good video overall though
Mr. Fantano, I'm surprised you decided to dock 2 full points just because of the word "Dark" being in the title, despite you finding the album to be "essentially perfect"....
Fantano, the term “works out too much” is a reference to the all-too-common phrase of “yeah, it just didn’t work out” when in relation to relationships.
Pretty sure he understood that seeing as Anthony literally said "this song seems to be straightforward about a break up." Aka "didn't work out." Not sure where else he would be able to draw that conclusion seeing as the song only references the break up through "the only reason we never worked out..." so yeah.
9/10 this album and the context behind it are very interesting throughout. For the most part it is a short punchy ride from beginning to end. I like the warping of pop sounds of the past, and I think there are so many solid moments on here with really good instrumentation, and lyrically though it is sometimes cheesy, like in Tslamp, it is still fun to listen to as there is so much going into it. The album is like this pretty consistent with that. The vocal performance on each track matches the tone very well, and the title track is the best track on the album, with an infectious chorus to boot. The biggest drawback for me is I feel like it doesn't finish As strong as it starts. Specifically the last two songs. They aren't super bland or bad, but it's clear that they don't have as much to offer as the warbly 80s inspired jam opener, or a song like days that got away. I just wanna share my opinion. I haven't watched the review so let's see if me and melon thought the same of this album
One Thing Left To Try: it’s like the brother of the track She Works Out Too Much. It’s dreamy, it’s catchy, it’s arguably the best track behind When You Die. Solid stuff and it’s one of those tracks you can’t help, but always hear all the way through once it starts. Love it. 10/10.
John Maus. John Maus. John Maus. Loved the album though hard 8, soft 9. Best to date as far as the cohesiveness. Adding most of it to my regular playlists.
Track "TSLAMP" did remind me of Pet Shop Boys, although not from their Behaviour period. I would say, it bears many similarities to the song "Domino Dancing" off their Introspective LP (and which was their last big hit, by the way).
It's fucking wonderful. If Me and Michael had more catchy verses, though, it would've taken top spot because of that fucking amazing chorus. Of course, nothing can match the build up and payoff of the first "GO FUCK YOURSELF" it's fucking great.
Red Smurf I thought it was about two gay guys in love but it's actually about two guys who are basically in love but just not gay. The music video was a hilarious rip on the music industry stealing songs too.
I love this album and ironically Days That Got Away is my favourite cut. Gave me similar vibes to the end of Metanoia and Siberian Breaks; I love songs that aren't afraid to rely entirely on instrumentation to evoke a certain mood or emotion.
I guess back then I might've given it a strong 8 too, but given how it's aged it feels like an absolute 10. It stands out, it resonates and I feel like it's still to influence the industry.
Very true. 5 years later people are even more addicted to their phones, and everybody has become obsessed with how they look from watching fitness influencers all the time. She works out too much and tslamp have just aged to describe our society even more accurately
