I just enjoy the pop punk revival. I may agree on some arguments, but I am just happy for new sh*t coming up. I am a relatively young person, but not the youngest anymore haha I still love this kind of music and I am so happy that I get the opportunity to listen to new pop punk music, that I really enjoy and like. It doesn't need to be totally innovative, nor sound exactly like the old songs, ot be so deep when it comes to the lyrics. For me it just has to be good. I love that album and I am thankful that I am going to have good music in my good years, just like the people had when I was still a kid. The era just started 😎🤘🏻

Avril is her own brand. She doesn't have to conform. When she made mature stuff, people wanted pop-punk and now when she's made that, they want mature stuff , cant make everyone happy. The album title is "love sux" what more do people expect!!

This was such a nice review! I was at first very disappointed with the writing on this album but I do agree with you, it's not like these songs were meant to be particulary deep in the first place, but just more fun and relatable. Yet, I still think she could have done something better....

This is the only review of this album I come close to agreeing with. The amount of pop-punk fans that openly shit on this album, mainly because of her age and the lyrics, and yet worship Tom Delonge like a god despite him writing high-school lyrics way past that age is ridiculous. Just look up Rebel Girl from the recent Angels and Airwaves album, I found that WAY cringier than anything on Avril's album.

A lot of punk music has ALWAYS been super dumb, so I agree that makes no sense to critique her lyrics on that basis now, jut because she is older (and female.) However, Let Go has the punk atmosphere nailed, and still delivered moments of real maturity which are largely absent from Love Sux, which shows she IS capable of better writing, in a way that could be better received. Still, this a brisk and fast-paced listen, that is thematically consistent. And at least it's not boring, or outright painful in spots, like her last two records were. It's near-relentless dumb fun-that's good enough for me.

As somebody who is still a fan of Avril's and still loves "Let Go" ("Complicated" is one of my favourite hit songs of 2002) and "Under My Skin", this album was the Avril Lavigne I've missed since 2005 (I've liked select songs from albums since but not liked those albums as a whole eg: "Here's To Never Growing Up" etc). "Bite Me" gets better every damn time I've heard it, for me, "Love Sux" was an escape/nostalgia trip I needed. Now can we get an Avril and Olivia collab?

This record is fun, and I love so much about Avril Lavigne in Pop Punk. Despite never really captured that youth she did in her first three record (tho close like Avalanche and Dare to Love Me) she still has that voice since under 20s and kicka** delivery on the mic to being in Travis Barker production on this record
It's a return to formed sound I think she ever had since The Best Damn Thing. Over the course of Pop music, I'm glad we got this Pop Punk album. Just amazing, great to see you enjoy this record Mark :)

My gripe with this album is the lyrics... Example: "you're an asshole living in a castle", "I wish my life would've come with instructions", "you think I'm stupid I keep killing cupid". She's done how many albums & her lyrics sound childish compared to early in her career when they sounded mature.

Overall - a pretty average pop punk album I liked Tickets To My Downfall more then this. Not bad but apart a few tracks I will forget about it.

On first listen, I thought this album was pretty decent.
Yeah, the overcompression from Travis is still there but I never minded it, plus Avril absolutely OWNS it with the vocals. My biggest criticism is with the lyrics and not that they're immature, but like you said, how anonymous they feel; like most anyone could've written them. There's little-to-no flair that I *know* Avril could bring. So for me, the album lives or dies by its grooves and how much it slaps. And a good chunk of it does indeed slap pretty hard, enough that I can say it leans into quality.
I am open to this album growing on me, though.

Favorite songs: Bose Lie, All I wanted Featuring Mark hoppus,Bite Me, Deja Vu. Least favorite Cannonball, Love it when u hate me.
While I’d appreciate Avril Lavigne is going back towards her roots; her vocal performance is still is as surreal as before. The problem mostly which I’d encounter is basically the writing sounds as if she doesn’t elevate the songs content wise it’s comes off a bit pretentious, immature. You would believe artists are in there most mature slate as they get older. I like Avril music she given pop punk especially in the mainstream a very wholesome name it’s a slight improvement over Head above water. Gotta find some inspiration just wasn’t here.

I thought this album was just whatever. I don’t think it’s terrible by any means in the same way that I think Tickets To My Downfall is terrible and it’s most definitely a step up from her last one, plus the instrumentation and Avril’s delivery both kick a ton of ass, but unfortunately the writing and the production kill it for me. I’m just generally not into this snotty, bratty, teenage poetry esq. writing style and I always found this writing style worse than self-indulgent nihilism, which at least can offer something to say if done right. As for the production, it’s just kind of all over the place and it makes for an album that’s just way too loud at times. Again I don’t hate this album and it definitely has its moments, but I can’t say that it was better than just average at best.

The songs on the back half were better than the first half but this isn't more than a "meh" for me. I loved "Goodbye Lullaby" (the call and answer record to Sum 41's "Screaming Bloody Murder" about her breakup and divorce with Derek) and "Here's to Never Growing Up
and "Head Above Water" but I feel the lyrics and songwriting really hold this back. As someone who enjoyed "Tickets to My Downfall" I felt that project worked (probably as a one-time, one-off; the successive singles like "Emo Girl" less so) because it played on the "30's the new 20; adolescence stretches into one's 20s of the millennial, boomerang, post-2008 GFC generation; MGK references being "29 and society eating [him] alive"). MGK used the music of melodrama, high school emo boys to tell of his own anxiety-riddled, drug-fuelled 20s while dating the popular girl (Meghan Fox) so he utilized the same genre of early 2000s pop punk to tell that story. In other words, the music/story he was trying to tell fit perfectly with the genre instead of coming off as (with his post TtMD-tracks and "Love Sux") fitting the songs/storyline into the genre.
I'll listen to these songs on shuffle, but I wish she could've at least used the punk pop genre to do something that the genre was also used for; political commentary. I feel if she'd gone the "American Idiot" or even Sum 41 "Underclass Hero" or even the recent "Order in Decline" and talked about real political issues through pop punk it might've landed better and the age criticisms would've been muted.

If Travis is the only producer that will make these pop punk revival albums, can we please have someone go in there and smack him around until he learns how produce an audible bass, maybe even get him to give the songs he produces a good bassline?
A good, catchy, audible bassline is crucial to a lot of the best punk, pop or otherwise, especially if the guitars don't do much throughout the song, and I'm sick of people not utilizing the bass to it's full potential.
I'm not even asking for Todd Kowalski or Karl Alvarez, just SOMETHING to help elevate the songs and make em even better. =n=

Interesting how you bring up the subject of immaturity and its double standard. I'd counter this by saying that I HAVE seen this happen to a male musician in a review of 'With Teeth' by Nine Inch Nails, where the most common complaint about it was that it seemed immature for a man in his forties to still be writing angsty lyrics. Of course, this is just one example, but I have witnessed it before.
It's worth noting that despite its overly slick production, though, Avril is back to taking creative risks, and that alone is something worth appreciating!
