    A little about me and this channel:
    My name is James Aubrey IV and I just recently graduated college from Iowa State University. After college I decided to take a leap of faith. So I moved to San Diego California to pursue my passion for videography/ TH-cam. Overall I'm a pretty chill person, outside of TH-cam I like to longboard, dance, play video games, lift weights and hangout with my friends. I know that success on TH-cam won't happen overnight but I'm willing to stay patient and put in the work to try to prefect my craft daily. This TH-cam channel will be centered around my life after college. You will be able to see all of the ups and downs on my journey to success. So if you like the content make sure you subscribe so you can be apart of the Rome Life Family. (Let's build our own personal Rome's together.)
    What is the Rome Life ? And What does it mean to be apart of it?
    Rome Life is something I started during my Sophomore year of high school (one of the worst times in my life) it started off as me documenting my journey to recovery from my shoulder surgery but eventually it turned into a platform that I could use to encourage myself as well as others to chase our dreams.
    Rome Life isn't just a saying it's a way of life and for the people who want to be apart of it have to realize that. Rome wasn't built in a day it took a lot of handwork time and most importantly patience. So you can't expect your dreams to be any different

      I was in junior high from 88-90. I remember distinctly thinking that I wish there was music that really spoke to me. Basically most people I knew were either into NKOTB or hair metal. I leaned towards hair metal, but the music still left me wanting.
      A year later, I heard this, and was like "this is it! That's the sound!" It just tapped into something collective for gen x. Rage, apathy, boredom, whatever it was, I felt it to my core.

    This song dropped out of nowhere and completely took over an entire generation and launched the grunge movement! Grunge was a sub-genre of alternative. The typical "grunge" song was driven by heavy instrument distortion and angst-filled lyrics that a lot of us young folks were drawn to. To completely understand the impact grunge had on Gen X, you have to understand the prior decade, the 80's. Most of us had parents who were busy climbing up the corporate ladder or we had one parent struggling to make ends meet! Either way we were alone a lot. The music was horrible in my opinion, a lot of one-hit wonders, pop princesses, and dudes in bright spandex, eyeliner and big, over-processed hair. The lyrics were empty and my friends and I couldn't relate to them. When grunge made it's way to the midwest, most of us became grunge. It became a "look" and we were all the way in! Finally, there was lyrics that spoke to us! A group of young midwest GenX misfits finally found their place. Unfortunately, there's only two grunge OGs left, Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam and an honorable mention has to go to Dave Grohl!
    Andrew Wood - RIP
    Kurt Cobain - RIP
    Layne Staley - RIP
    Chris Cornell - RIP
    Scott Weiland - RIP
    I have to mention Chester-RIP - he came later but he spoke to my soul! I hope Heaven has a stage and off to the right, a pit!!

      The weird thing is anyone outside North America knew it was just a matter of time. With the US there is around a 8 to 10 year cycle where a new or modified style breaks through and becomes popular and Grunge was the one for the early 90's but it wasn't actually something new. Even though Punk had arguably started in New York in the early to mid 70's it never took hold in the US but hit big in the UK and elsewhere. Come the early 90's and the youth in the US was looking for a new music to call their own and suddenly they embraced these bands that were playing a form of punk and Grunge was born. If you listen to the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Joy Division, The Jam, Boomtown Rats etc you can see where the sound that became Grunge was being adapted by the British & Irish bands from people like Iggy and the Stooges in the US. People outside the US were already well and truly grounded in that style by the time Grunge hit in North America and many had always been a little surprised that Punk hadn't been bigger in the US in the first place. Those ragged angry riffs and vocal stylings could have been designed in a lab to appeal to teenagers - it just works on such a primal level.

    • @GKinslayer
      @GKinslayer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@alphaomega7191 Ummm if you only pay attention to top 10 you would think punk never became big in the USA. But punk was all over the USA with bands in almost every city and many many towns.

    • @alphaomega7191
      @alphaomega7191 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@GKinslayer - Thats kind of the point - it was there lurking waiting to break through but hadn't done it yet. So it really wasn't out of nowhere but rather a almost certain event.
      Whats weird is the history of American Music in the 20th Century was easily predictable when you look at it logically. Black Americans would come up with a musical style - cool white Americans would enjoy that style - White record companies would then get white artists to record in that style which would send it Mainstream - Black Americans would decide that the style was no longer theirs and create a new style and the process would repeat. Up until the early 60's this was a constant pattern. Then the Civil Rights Era saw Black artists begin to become more mainstream and slowly gain more musical control which meant the cycle began to change. The music didn't go out of fashion for the black population as much anymore and the white record companies started to look elsewhere for new stufff. You got the British Invasion which was re-purposed American style rock married to more traditional British melodic they lyrical traditions, they embraced Country more heavily, they then embraced the hard rock style of Sabbath/Hendrix/Zepplin and when Punk hit in the UK tried that in America but the innate conservatism in American society especially places like the mid-west didn't take to it as much. Meanwhile African Americans had started to control their own record labels and when Hip-Hop and Rap hit they really controlled that music which is why that became the standard and has never really gone out of fashion. Meanwhile the mainstream white population kept up it's cyclical trend which meant that at some point a version of Pop Punk was going to come into fashion as they were at this point recycling older styles and marrying them with a pop sensibility. We got Hair Metal and that was followed by Grunge, the pop Country of people like Shania Twain, Teen Idols recycled in Spears/N'Sync etc. So in the Late 20th Century it reached a tipping point when the Internet began to become a thing - people began to have much more easy access to music and this has led to things no longer really being in or out of fashion and many of the old styles becoming successful again - people like Michael Buble does his 50's style Lounge stuff, a generation of women sing in that 50s/60's soul way and their are a ton of folky singer songwriters out there. We might not actually see a big boom like Grunge again simply because there's really no such thing as being in or out of style anymore and people can like say Ed Sheerin and Adele and Katy Perry and Lady Gaga and Disturbed and Slipknot or Daft Punk and not feel like they have to choose a genre anymore - now we get K-Pop and Japanese cute metal girl bands and nobody really blinks an eye because everything is acceptable and people will simply enjoy music if it sounds good to them rather than worry about if it's in fashion.

    • @GKinslayer
      @GKinslayer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alphaomega7191 Grunge was nothing but emo-core slightly re-tuned - see Rights of Spring and Honor Role. It was record label bullshit that came up with the term. Also you seem REALLY blind to the whole punk subculture. It didn't involve record labels because for the longest time punk was like poison to the companies. Almost ALL the punk much you can find in the USA was put out by either the bands themselves or with others in the scene - heard of the term DIY? It came from punk since if we didn't do it, it didn't get done. The bands, the shows, the zines, etc - all of it was just us. Hell when I moved to Savannah in the later 80's my friends and I started putting on shows out of boredom since no one else was. We lost money every time, which we excepted - we just wanted to see some bands. As for pop punk - what you know if it - Green Day and the rest were bought up by record labels or created by them. They mellowed their sound so they could be sold in Wal-Mart.

    • @alphaomega7191
      @alphaomega7191 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@GKinslayer - I'm anything but unaware of Punk - I come from a place and culture that had embraced it well before it became popular in the US. I agree it always existed post the CBGB era in the US as a sub-culture. There are always a lot of sub-cultures and they rarely break-thru to become mainstream because of the effect I mentioned - once they become popular the people who originally embraced them often feel dis-enfranchised and move on. My point remains that Grunge was always going to happen it was just a matter of when in response to the idea that Grunge came out of nowhere - at some point Record Companies were always going to try to repackage Punk in a new and perhaps more palatable form it was just a matter of when not if. Many of the Seattle bands had a mix of Punk and Pop/Rock in their sound which made them ideal for said repackaging - often Punk bands think melody is anti-Punk but in Seattle it was seen as fine to have melody in your work which meant with marketing the sound could cross-over. I dont know if they had to mellow their sound really although they definitely added a level of production polish.

He HATED how the industry treated kick arse talented women musicians and he had no tolerance for those who oppressed people with a diff sexual life. Grohl was writing all kinds of great stuff while behind the drum set but stayed back out of respect for the talent that Kurt had.

      To be fair the hair metal scene was basically dead already, they'd been completely co-opted by corporate music labels and they weren't creating anything original or unique. I truly believe Grunge so easily took over because you could feel how genuine this was the second you heard it. You could listen to any Metallica or GnR song and almost know what you were gonna get, but this was like a fusion of rock, metal, folk and punk, and it had real integrity that was somehow translated perfectly. Of course, it helps that the biggest market for popular music was teens, and this song is literally written about teenage angst lol

    This song dropped in my freshman year of high school in 1991and changed everything! Nirvana was the soundtrack of my high school years. My children are 16, 13 and 12 and have never not known who Nirvana was. My children have grown up on Queen, Nirvana, Michael Jackson, NWA, Dolly Parton and so on. Now they school me on today's music but we all embrace every genre of music. Music is truly the bridge that can bring every generation, every walk of life together. I love these reactions!

Grunge rock was born and hairspray sales took a dive I’m sure!😜 Suddenly messy hair, faded out blue jeans with holes, worn old t-shirts, ragged flannel shirts, scuffed up tennis shoes, were all the craze! That’s the power of music!!!

    A turning point song for a generation. If you were in high school when this song came out, your world view changed. When Kurt killed himself, school basically shut down for a day. Every kid was so overwhelmed, counselors were brought in from everywhere because there were too many people who needed answers to questions they couldn't get. Why did he do it? If he couldn't make it how could we. Nirvana and Kurt literally changed the world for Gen X.
