I use plastic bins for mine. I put window screening on the bottoms which works great for the beetles, but not for the worms. The beetle waste and eggs fall through the screen into another bin. However, I found that the worms would chew through the screening. It was just easier to sift the worms out with a colander.
Your comment is so old but I thought i'd try to ask anyway.... How long do the layer crumbles last? Does it mold? I have 2000 mealworms on the way, I may just try this substrate! Thank you for posting this good idea!
@@steph6337 as long as you keep it dry I've got some that's well over a yr old & no mold issues but if I feed em any veggies or what not I always put it on a paper towel roll or something that keeps it from bein directly on the crumbles... hope that helps 😁
The warmer they are, the quicker they breed and grow. I used to breed them for my lizards. I covered the top with newspaper. If you use a fine square mesh 1/8” wire on top to keep the beetles in and move it to a new box of bran, weekly, you can keep the resultant worms in age groups but of course its a little more work. Just be careful if you strain them out to put them in a new container of bran because the dust from their excreta can be very irritating to your lungs.
great video as always, ty! So here is a dumb newbie question, I get that you pick out the pupae daily which is easy enough. but how do you easily get out a larger quanity of worms to use? Just grab the worms and bedding or run them through some kind of seive to remove the bedding? I have seen the gold mining seives on amazon, being in Canada I am not willing to spend a few hundred $$ to sort mealworms from chaff for my chickens. It seems beside the point!
I'm a new subscriber, just found you. (I'm into food subjects and I love to fish ;) ) question for you, I have a couple of reptiles that I'm always running to Petco to get worms for and they normally end up dying in the container...big waste. Could I do this on a smaller scale indoors?? What do you suggest? Looking forward to scouring your prev vids and futures!
😂 I do mealworm farming and I did put them in the some in the freezer so they would fall asleep then die, and fried them up and asked my family to try them 😂 well I have a family of 8 only me and 2 of them would eat them, all three of us agreed the taste like chicken skins, we all thought they were good. It was a fun experience.
I did it the same way at first, do the separation method 5-1 for sure. beetles, larva, meal worms. and the jumbo seem to breed and produce more signifanctly..
What was that sound the Beetle make? Good video John. I know they use alot of meal worms for fishing up north. Does or can this supplement your Bait Business?
So leftover mealworms into aquarium, w oatmeal Y wheatbran and your worms turn into pupa then hatch into beetles which mate and make more mealworms? Wow! Easy peasy and uncomplicated! Thank you. Please reply to this comment. I have 10 ducks and 4 chickens and I really meed some mealworms!
Is there a stage between larvae and pupae? I keep looking for pupae, but I haven’t found any. I do see a lot of motionless worms, though. At first, I thought I should remove them because maybe they’re dead, but then I thought they might be on their way to becoming pupae
Actually meal worms are a big source of protein and roasting or drying can keep them for quite a while. Then just grind into a powder and add to your bread, muffins, and such and no one even knows they are eating them lol. Julia
I just started watching your channel and using your rabbit advice, but I wanted to remind you, you need to separate each stage because like you sort of mentioned they are cannibalistic
You look like a nice, happy man.
This man is so positive and has a kind aura. I love him!
Used to love watching my chickens scurry over each other eating mealworms!!!
I loved the"Brown chicken brown cow" music u did.
Thank you so much! I read several articles about this that made it seem so complicated. This is great
The camera person snicker was awesome! Thanks for this. We failed on the multi box, separate the stages set up. This is awesome and so much easier!
Dude you are so cool!!!! We enjoy all your videos and you are very smart! Thanks from your bud in Texas
Great for songbird feeders in the wintertime...
I'm watchin' with my 10 year old daughter this morning and she wants her own colony of meal worms. lol Great video, appreciate you sharin'. :)
Jody Flores dis she get them?
Your the best brother,we love you out here in Okie land. If you see a beetle that has a mustache it's Ringo.

Great vi video.
Much simpler approach to raising mealworms than other videos. You sold me on the idea,
Thank you sir
You are both informative and entertaining. Thanks for the video!
grate share of making bait.
Great video, Great channel!

Eggs small enough to fall through screen holes? Wow.
This is brilliant thank you!
We use layer crumbles as our substrate instead of oatmeal & wheat bran because we already have chicken feed on hand... just thought I'd share
thanks for that info.

Good info. Thx. I was wondering if I should get organic veggies?
....and you don't want them to close to the chickens or they die. Lol great video
This is great information, Thanks for doing the video for us.
I use the jumbo Mealworms on a tiny jig head for trout in the Eastern Sierras, they work great.
Wonderful!!! Thank you so much! I never thought of this, but I'm going to try it now, thanks to you!
Very cool!
That was great and you were charming as always. Merry Christmas
“ I’m just a dude”!!! 😂 love it! A man’s man 👍

Bow Chicka wow wow! Love it! Might try for the chickens if I can get over the heeby geebies of it lol!
Outstanding!! So all i have to do to get started is buy the meal worms, not beetles?
Thanks for the awesome video. Do you have any Cookbook's left for sale? Thank you for sharing your life with us here on TH-cam.
Great, let us know when you have the starter kits ready to sell. Love you, Brother. jo ann
starter kits are available any time as these are breeding really fast,i have been collecting pupae close to 75 per day
That is relay interesting Jon.
Great vid again big fellor
That's awesome brother....and you're right...the chickens we got off of you, are addicted to them! They cost so much, but they love their treats lol.
St. Bernard Acres ii
It’s soo coooool
That's something we had happen by accident in a little bird cage. Pretty cool.
Cool man! Are the pupa stage the ‘wax worms’ we buy for ice fishing? Would love to farm them, good bait year round. Subbed!

I hear those mill worms can make good food for the future ...
You know you want some awesome Mill worm cupcakes

Meal worms love sweet potatoes. They might be a better source of food than carrots. :) And I've seen them raised in an open plastic tub.
04:44 "Seen dudes with big colonies, boy that looks hard! Tiny colonies sure are easier! There ya have it, hope ya learned somethin!"
Can any Beatle be used or there are special Beatles?
Hi. Do you take the beetles out at some point? I read that they might eat the eggs.
Thank you,,,
I would like to see you go fishing with Kris from MUDDYRIVER CATFISHING some day ... I could get him a message if you want?
How long does it take the beetle eggs to hatch?

So I don't need too separate the eggs from the beetles🐞? Or separate the eggs from the worms 🐛?
So I can keep them all in the same thing together!?
Yep.................J
jnull0
Oh ok thank man! 😊
I have a few baby mealworms, they so small! Not sure if I have any super worms yet! Got some wax worm 🐛 eggs too! 😊
Do you have to cover the top to keep the beetles from getting out?
no the beetles are not able to fly nor can they crawl up the glass sides of the tank
Yay
What is the favorite food mealwor.s. Is it bran, oatmeal or both
Do you make video on rabbit food
How much are your kits?
thank you
I didn't even know mealworms turned into beetles, I assumed it would be a fly of some kind!
ASK wherever fish tanks are sold and you can get cracked ones for next to nothing. Sometimes even for free. I use 'em to raising everything BUT fish.
What do you do with the poop they produce? How do you get that out?
Do you have the starter kits ready for sale yet?
I looked into black soldier fly but that is way too much work. We have chickens and reptiles this is awesome. Your videos are so great
once you've got the stuff it' free food for the chicken and for fishing too
Mealworms are edible insects. Easy and cheap to grow. A pretty healthy food source.
Possible future bait item in your business?
they are a novelty and safe to eat... try freezing them and chopping them up and adding to meatballs. It makes for a moister meatball. 75% protein.
They can fly and will if the food or moisture is gone.
Looks like you have a few warts on your hand. Keep an eye on those. Wouldn't want them spreading.
Why seperate pupae?
How do you clean it without losing all the eggs?
we have yet to actualy clean ours yet,no idea how thats going to work lol
also great for leopard geckos!
Is it really that easy!!
Don’t pack in zip lock bags. I packed some corn in my cupboard in my classroom for a project once. You don’t want them in the cupboard. Icky.
Bird crack😂
The pupa work even better for fishing than the mealworms.
is this from tennasaeeeeeeee
Great videos. Keep them coming.
JNull you need to check out Off Grid Homesteader Cecil E. Skinner.
Sorry to hear you have worms John, lol
Seems to be extremely labor intensive compared to BSF

It's hard to find a good wormanologist anymore.
almost a lifetime supply of trout bait
You DON't want incest in the colony !
Ha Ha I accidentally killed mine. went to clean out the bin and it was too hot out side and they cooked.
i subbed . and not for your tattoo work.!! haha
