Hi, very helpful video - just getting started here and trying to figure out supplies for most efficient process. I understand the stages (and how to keep alive): egg, worm, pupae, beetle. For my chickens, I would pull out some of these 1"worms (or sell excess to nearby feed stores?), and let the smaller ones grow up. If I let some worms get to pupae, i can get a sifter that's available to go in these buckets, to sift out pupae to put in separate container until they become beetles (for more eggs). I think I understand (?) and my main question is - how do I sort or end up with just the frass and skeleton peices (to add to compost pile)? In your video, did fras end up in the very bottom, so you discarded or composted that portion? Also, does the 1/8th catch the 1" worms and 1/30th catch the smaller worms?
@@MidwestMealwormsat what point after harvesting eggs/worms from the beetles do you start sifting, so that the smallest of the worms/eggs can't get through?
Have you ever thought about making a pupea shorter for the small pupea. I am legally blind ans have to get sooooo close to the mealworms and all of ghem. It might be nice to be able to sort the small ones to. I won't quit just because I'm blind.😁
@@LM-wz9yw Yea i got one from them. I love it for the most part but quite a few pupae still get through. It at least cuts out some of the work though. But softer or smaller pupae get through it easily.
1/8" mesh works well to seperate the beetles out, unless you're using oats. Then there's no hope. Frass is a soil amendment, use it for plants, gardens, yards.
I have these but their are gaps between the mesh and rum and quite a few worms get stuck. Even after 3 days meal worms was still falling out. Not happy with my purchase.
I have just bought a 5 pan sifting set and I notice all the mesh/wire in pans are raised slightly in the centre, is this a defect or are is the base of mesh supposed to not be flat
I was wondering do you know what would kill so many mealworms i bought them on Sat yesterday 7/23 from Pet Zone I bought 500 and most of them are dead . I am going to bring them back they costed me 15.09 My turtle doesn't like dead Mealworms he won't eat them . I told the girl my turtle won't eat dead ones . It was full of them black ones turning black . With the other mealworms i just clean it out once a week and check when i feed my turtle go through each one .Thank you for listening to me . I wish i knew what killed them . I bought 2 100 containers they have air holes 72 + were dead that was the week before i had to bring them back to Pet zone the same day . No idea if they show up at the store dead already . No idea if that is the case or they died at the store . Has anyone else had this problem?
@@MidwestMealworms I had my other worms out overnight they both were fine no dead ones the people get Pet zone tried to tell me if they are not in the refrigerator they were in all night this afternoon i went to town they looked the same as last night when i brought them here the ones that are alive are barely moving the ones i had from a few weeks ago are still feisty even though they were in the refrigerator day i just gave my turtle a few of them he refuses to eat the others he s little my son's turtle is way bigger he ate those i gave them to him . Yes, 1/8 inch catches large, 1/30 catches small. 1/30 let's the frass through which ended up in the very bottom.
They gar stuck

Thank you, this helps with my superworm farm.
I want to get something like this. Can you give a link to what I should get on amazon for sifting?

Here's a list of several, the exact one I used in this video isn't available anymore.
Hi i want ti heat treat my wheatbran in silo can yiu guite me wuth the optimal temerature to kill eggs and grain mites?
I'm not sure, it would need to get very hot to ensure the center of the siloed bran gets hot enough....200+ degrees F at least.
Nice experience, what size of hole of a pupae sifter u recommend?
It varies by colony, measure the widest part of your pupaes to get your accurate size.
Hi this is ritesh from dubai my mealworm pupu became black, dry and dead?

It would be great to have something that seperated pupae from mealworms, regardless of size but I haven't found anything yet!

What size sifter do you use for the beetles? What is the use for frass?

I haven't had any issues, try caulking the gaps?
@@MidwestMealworms I shouldn't have to
@@alasporter they are made for panning for gold / silver etc. If you want trouble free for sorting mealworms you may want to adapt.
For a small mealworm farm what size sifters would you recommend? The 1/30th and the 1/8th is what I was thinking
Yes, those sizes will cover 80% of the work.
I have just bought a 5 pan sifting set and I notice all the mesh/wire in pans are raised slightly in the centre, is this a defect or are is the base of mesh supposed to not be flat
it's raised in the middle to help 'move' the contents away from the center to encourage sifting.
Still using this machine?
Yes, but slowly phasing it out. It doesn't do enough volume now that we are producing more, but worked for years for us!
How do you get the mealworms out of the sifter when they get in between?
The sifters are not one unit, they come apart so they can be emptied.
@@MidwestMealworms yeah, but I’m talking about each sifter when they get in between the metal and the plastic
@@timothyroberts2178 I haven't had that problem I guess.
@@MidwestMealworms darn it lol they crawled in the littlest space between and I can’t get them out I also don’t have a vibrating machine
@@timothyroberts2178 maybe leave it be for a while so they come out, then caulk the place they got in through?
Do you mix the frass and wheat bran for substrate?
Frass is the excrement / manure, the mealworms don't eat it. I use wheat bran for the substrate that they consume.

I see a lot of die off when companies use chemicals to stop pupation. Perhaps that's what happened here, nothing you did wrong.
