    I am very new and learning. Right now I have pupae in there own bin and every couple of days I collect adults. I did not think about spreading the pupae on an upside down container. Great idea.

    Very nice! Great video! I cannot do that much work so I just keep all of mine together and scoop out some as need to feed to my chickens. I am able to keep them all together because I use natural substrate material like logs, dirt, leaves. They can hide from each other and dont get eaten. This is especially useful when farming super worms since I dont have to risk losing them in forced isolation. They decide when they are ready to pupate and burrow into the logs to transform. I got my starter worms at Petsmart, just a few dozen to start with. I just posted an annual update video if you'd like to check it out 😃💖🐓🐣

      Not from what I've found, you may look into the 3 drawer screen system that a few other people have made videos on. I think that may sift the meal worms down but I can't recall.

      70-80% is ideal but 55-60% is still fine. When I had my farm inside, I kept a humidifier in the room and had a hygrometer to see the humidity. Are you having a hard time keeping them alive? Or are they not progressing through the stages?

    • @rcklivestockhomestead2633
      @rcklivestockhomestead2633  ปีที่แล้ว

      How great! I don't know how small a 1/30 screen is but your beetle eggs are about the size of a "." Super tiny! Your meal worm babies will need some food when they hatch so that's why when I do sort my beetles (I never did get a video of this last year) I take my beetles out of one bin leaving all of the substrate, and put them into a new drawer with fresh substrate. Also because the eggs will stick to the bottom of the drawer so you don't lose those when you sift!

    How many times to feed mealworms

    • @rcklivestockhomestead2633
      @rcklivestockhomestead2633  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello! It just depends on how many you have! I usually feed the moisture source to mine about once a week or when they've eaten the vegetable completely. As far as wheat bran goes, I start with 1-2 inches of it and sift the mealworms about once a month or so.

      I would go for a humidifier in the room or a wet paper towel beside them. The reason being is that I would be worried about when they dry they might stick to the surface they are on. But you could always try it with a few and see how it works!

      @rcklivestockhomestead2633  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you sift your beetles and see what looks like dust stuck to the bottom of the bin, those are all eggs. I don't remember what the time is it takes for them to hatch and develop but it is awhile. Eventually you will see the substrate moving if you push it up- looking like it's sliding, those are all the babies moving the substrate!

    You can get a beetle sorter from scmw put the worms and or the Pupea in top area. Feed needs to be shifted before adding to top area. Then the worms or beetles will crawl out into bottom area. Makes it so easy.

      @@rcklivestockhomestead2633 I am currently running some tests on this very thing. One tray of pupae are maintained at the room's humidity and the other is in a closed but vented container with a small dish of water. The first tray is averaging 55% humidity with a hatch rate of 43% and the second tray is averaging 88% humidity and a hatch rate of 5% to date. I have only been running this for 5 days so it is not yet conclusive. After about another 3 weeks I should be able to determine actual rates when all the pupae have either hatched or have died. There are some holes in my experiment. 1. The humidity is difficult to control in the second bin. 2. My stupid cat knocked into the second bin and soaked the paper towels the pupae were laying on so they were in damp bedding and 3. Each bin was from a separate colony of mealworms. I plan on rerunning this with pupae from the same colony. The hatch rate may be genetically linked. Anyway, food for thought.

  • @tina_mg
    @tina_mg ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Super dumb question - but do you have to worry about the beetles getting out, or do they just stay in the drawer and continue to reproduce? Trying to determine if keeping the farm inside the house is a good idea.

    • @rcklivestockhomestead2633
      @rcklivestockhomestead2633  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not dumb! They have wings but their shell isn't split so they can't open their shell to fly. So no, you dont have to worry about them getting out unless you give them a way to crawl out. I have kept them in the shallow 10 drawer systems from Michael's and never had a problem. I also kept them in a spare bedroom when I was new and excited with them.

      @@rcklivestockhomestead2633 Thanks for the quick reply! That makes sense! Another few questions for you, how long do the mealworms typically tend to live? Are you having to process them in any other way such as drying them to store, or are you just continually feeding the chickens the live worms? I’m used to the packed dry worms, sooo…

    • @rcklivestockhomestead2633
      @rcklivestockhomestead2633  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You will only have them as mealworms for a few months, then they will turn to pupae. Alot if people freeze them to kill them and then bake them on very low heat to dehydrate them. If I remember right, the overall lifespan of a darling beetle from egg- beetle is around 8-9 months
