They’ll start cracking down? Like they do with car theft? Like they do with camps and trash? Like they do with abandoned vehicles?
I’ll believe it when I see all if it dealt with Wheeler .
Cracking down = waste more tax money and make it impossible for a home owner to buy spray paint.
Milwaukee Wi. In 1990s' was graffiti/taging was worse. City created a special task force of Detectives. They started to give serious time in prison and very heavy fines. Much cleaner nowadays.
trash, sure, camps, phuck off you rancid human. those camps are peoples homes. you want them gone? tell the world to stop yanking peoples homes from them and do something right for a change. you're a gross skin sack. its almost funny to even call you a human with these kind of thoughts.
It’s a layer of paint, man up dude
Jail + fine + work team focused on removal. Work component critical. Round them up, put them to work(without pay)... they clearly have free time.
I wonder if this spray painting people are people mostly of color LOL hee hee 🤣
Forced labor for the incarcerated I believe that is illegal in the state of Oregon they call it slavery I call it reparations to the people all people yep we need the chain gang back but it'll never happen
FREE EMILE pdx sk8 legend. You have way bigger problems than kids painting on signs. Seriously? - "our garbage cans look awful" Please....
Amen
We need a District Attorney who will actually PROSECUTE criminals.
FYI George So-ros runs this city.
Amen!

@@markbenton4370 How dare you assume my gender!
Hey old man prosecution never stopped graffiti in any city no matter how much time the yo dish out ....
He said it himself. The city got an extra $2 million but yet they were still getting complaints because nothing was being done where did the money go
Every time a bum takes a dump on the sidewalk it costs something outrageous like $300 in time, materials, etc. To clean it up. We have a lot of bums with heroin $#!tZ here.
@@rerun3283 yeah instead of using that money to help fund our society we waste the money to further negatively effect our citizens and country
That $2 million just went into the tip jar of some politician or bureaucrat.
its just an excuse for them to steal $ from people , and it is ridiculously sad. i know first hand from experience that it doesnt cost more than $100 maximum to remove even the biggest art pieces, they just dont do that. its disgusting that the city treats this as vandalism. phuck the laws and phuck the people who think this isnt art. you arent human.
Like San Francisco city will fine the businesses for not cleaning up graffiti fast enough, Portlander need to sue PDOT and ODOT for failure to clean up the signs promptly.
The mayor's office makes it an artform to put out hollow written respond statements. They must have a drawers full of these form statements.
Man the whole defund the police, BLM, and not prosecuting crime policy has worked out really well for Portland.
They never say Defund the FBI. I wonder why.
Criminals come to Portland they notice laws are not being enforced, homeless, graffiti, trash & ect.
Portland is Candyland for criminals.
What does blm have to do with this
absolutely nothing to do with blm. these people are so manipulated by the media that they can't think for themselves
The graffiti is the best part of Portland. No one can stop the painting.
Oh my sweet summer child
I am a graffiti artist myself and I take painting on people's property seriously and respect most stuff I paint on when I was younger didn't care as much but I can tell you this America is going down the drain very fast and graffiti is the last thing people need to worry about ,with that said I know for a fact that graffiti is a sign that your city is working culturally if you have no graffiti in your city it simply means it's dead and it helps bring in tourism from all over people are shooting up schools and public venues choose your battles wisely graffiti can never be stopped are prehistoric ancestors did it and we are at it today get over it folks...
Yeah that makes sense 🤔 🙄 funny how the areas with the most graffiti are the areas that have the most crime. Graffiti is not art, its trash and you are not an artist
Did you ever take a moment to realize that you don’t have the right to deface property that doesn’t belong to you? How would you like it if someone defaced your home or your car or anything that belonged to you? Graffiti is nothing more than vandalism. Period. It shows a complete lack of respect for anyone or anything other than your pathetic ego. If you need to plaster your tag everywhere that indicates that you have a self-esteem problem.
If you were a real artist, you wouldn't be violating other people's rights. You are a criminal.
American Culture is the best culture. Chevrolet, Baseball, Apple pie and fast times at Ridgemont high.
You are just a degenerate criminal.
People will have their opinions,it' is funny how some of you have this sense of self-righteousness because you do not understand or approve of things that are out of your spectrum.. 🤷
Should not the punishment fit the crime? Should not taggers be sentenced to cleaning up the graffiti?
Dangerously electrify the signs but don't put any warnings on them.
Problem solves itself.
Easy-peazy.
All this graffiti in the streets look amazing i love seeing new tags and seeing old friends getting up
I agree my man 👍🏻👍🏻
Whats your address so all the artist can come to your blank canvas?
This is what “defund the police” looks like.
Nice Try.... But PDX looked like this long before 'Defund the Police"
@@arthurseery Portland has gotten so much worse over the past decade and especially the past 5 years. The city is unrecognizable from ten years ago.
@@pringlw yup it went from “weird” to bad to horrendous now! I’ve lived here 30 years , Portland is a shadow of its former self. I’m disgusted by what I see here in 2022 🤮
Copykat, ever had a comment you thought of by yourself?
@@pnw_jordan They defunded the police in 2020 (dropped the budget by huge amounts). They cut budgets and laid off officers. They are now trying to fix the disaster it caused and increase funding again but a lot of damage has been done.
Without a DA who will prosecute these crimes, what's the point. God bless the PPB and ODOT and other agencies for doing thier best to clean this up, but without prosecution it's just another example of why Portland is over. Sad.
PPB isn't interested in going anything except dressing up like army men and beating up annoying teenage protesters. They don't care if a hobo is making your life hell. That's not their problem (it should be )
u grew up here?
They should pay all damages and serve time in jail.
Jennifer, your city IS trashy. There's no gilding the lily on this one. Even in Detroit and Baltimore and Memphis, I've never seen such committed desecration of important highway signage like the image in 0:49.
It's kind of fun and festive thinking of how Portland has returned to its roots as a lawless wild-wild West town.
I think severing the index finger on both hands would be a fitting punishment and an effective deterrent.
Portland looks worse than Detroit.
Why do you think there is no Graffiti in Singapore. Becuse they know that there will be swift severe consequences!
"Cracking down" in Portland means zilch. Wheeler is absent as Mayor.
Showing graffiti over boarded windows and doors as if the graffiti is the issue. Well done KGW. Let's get to the real issue. Portland's "leadership". We need an overhaul.
Man they will blame everyone but them, it’s everyone else.
Reminds me of California. How about the city follow through with stated intentions.Like a living wage, housing prices in comparison, basic rights in accessing resources.
THE REASON IT LOOKS UGLY TOO IS BECAUSE VERY FEW PORTLAND WRITERS HAVE SKILLS THEY ARE KNOWN AS TOYS IN THE GRAFF SCENE, BACK IN NEW YORK IF YOU WERE NOT ABLE TO WRITE YOUR NAME NICELY YOU WERE BEAT UP AND SHOWN NO RESPECT TILL YOU COULD DO YOUR GRAFFITI PROPERLY. PORTLAND HAS NO CODE LIKE THAT SO ITS ALOT OF UGLY GRAFF OUT THERE.
Well what you said is pretty much stupid, Which is why you probably had to yell about it. The purpose of graffiti is literally to look bad, Like nobody wants to move in and gentrify the neighborhood bad. Nobody got beat up for bad looking tags, they got beat up for tagging in the wrong place. Man you are just stupid..
I don't think this story makes you seem as cool and sophisticated as you think it does.
Probably a toy yourself 🤣🤣🤣
Ten years in prison.
Citizens should be more concerned about why covering graffiti cost so much. Gee, cover some paint with more paint. 6 grand for one spot? Really? Yeah, right.
sometimes its on a building that is unpainted (concrete or granite etc) where it has to be removed and not painted over. Super difficult. Also in really hard to get to spaces that requires lifts and scaffolding.
A judge just let Emile Laurent (who has a Nike sponsership) out today (8/23).
Cracking down indeed... Call Nike.
Portland was pristine when I moved there in ‘01. I moved to the east coast about a year ago and I don’t miss it.
What are you doing on here then if you don't miss Portland.. Foh Pinocchio you gotdamn liar 🤥
First off it's a racket. It doesn't cost that much to clean graffiti. The paint isn't the same it's no longer lead based like it was in the 80s so it doesn't leave ghost tags. Simple power wash take it's off. Painting it just makes a other canvas for tagging
true
Seems like dubious place to put your priorities. If this is what Portlanders are most concerned with, than they must have little to worry about these days.
It is a priority. If nothing about this is done, eventually they are going to tag your front window. Do you really want to look at this garbage everywhere you go?
@@Jacious its an unwritten rule in the graffiti and tagging culture to never hit up people's houses, cars, churches, etc. u got nun to worry about mbro
@@ANONYMOUS-yp8fi ok. If that’s the case, I can respect that. However, there is a building on SE Powell that is used by a non-profit that I see every day on my way to work that is a constant target. I would hope the community does something to police itself. Im sure they can’t afford the constant cost to clean up.
y'all do realize graffiti is as old as written language right ? you'll never stop it.
You right, it would be hard. Should just let them pain all over
If you make the punishment strong enough you’ll stop it.
Awe yes because all though out history people have had spray cans
Can you imagine? A graffiti "artist" in Rome 2000 years ago with hammer and chisel trying to leave his tag somewhere.
@@TheTibetyak u trying to be funny but graffiti has been found on ancient ruins from rome, chisel and paint, they had paint before long before you think, and dyes. Spreading messages through walls has been done since time began for humans.
So now, what is Tendo’s punishment going to be? He needs to be fined for the complete cost of the graffiti removal at the locations listed. For each additional location where his tag is found, fine him $5,000. Sentence him to 10 years in prison. During his prison time assign him to a daily graffiti clean up crew. And for incessant taggers like Tendo, impose the same sentence on them. If they can’t pay the fine, extend their prison sentence to 20 years. There is no reason in hell for this wanton destruction. Enough.
You really think sending a 22-year-old kid to prison for 20 years for painting walls is justifiable?
@@kenwoodmn3921 Yeah they do. Mark R is probably a trash person in many ways.
@@kenwoodmn3921 Yes. The message needs to be sent that the defacing of property that doesn’t belong to them won’t be tolerated.
@@markr8796 I'm of the opinion that the punishment should fit the crime- and as such, taking away a quarter of such a young person's life for a non-violent offense seems unthinkable. Make him pay a fine, put him on probation. Young people make mistakes and should have a chance to learn from them. Long prison sentences should be for people that are dangerous elsewhere. But that's just my opinion and it probably won't change yours. Good day.
You are actually insane.
Those people calling for mandatory minimum sentences or violence over graffiti in these comments? Get some mental health check ups.
MOST DEFINITELY need a mandatory minimum for graffiti. That's why they don't stop because there is no punishment.
Where do you live? I want to come draw dumb shit all over your house and car.
Our society has become too permissive. It’s not enough to arrest these punks anymore. Maybe it’s time to legalize labor camps where there are no sentences per se. Instead release is determined by literally paying your debt to society (cost of cleaning graffiti, cost of repairing damaged property, daily cost of participating in the program, etc.) by doing hard labor.
So, we are craving some WW2 Germany for the wicked, evil graffiti artists of Portland? Get fucked
Zero issue with street art... gives us something pretty to look at IMO. 😉
I agree. Commissioned street art murals throughout the city can be very beautiful, but the trashy tagging that is mostly what is out there. That crap needs to go now.
Half the “street art” you see is graffiti bozo

@@raidengrug9307 Bozo?!? why the name calling? Projecting while fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go thru life, son.
Who the fuck has the right to say what is and is and isn't art? I actually don't mind colorful graffiti, as long as it's on abandoned buildings and doesn't interfere with signs. A lot nicer looking than beige paint. We made buying markers hard 13 years ago, now you can just buy them on the internet.🙄
Yet they are tagging murals, brick building, traffic signs. Ive seen murals that have been around for years defaced and brick building that are over 100 years old defaced.
The solution is obvious. Put up cameras and arrest people in the act and then make them do a couple hundred hours of community service cleaning up the graffiti and put their name and face on T.V.
Why do not they also use money to stop these vandals from climbing up buildings to tag. Because if a building that is tagged and then covered. If the avenue they had used is not changed then they can make the same tag. It is a game to them.
Where’s Kate? Anyone seen Kate?

I would go on, but I don't think these clowns would spray paint anymore, after 5 or 10 years in jail.
Millions of dollars wasted taxpayers money.

Remember when you vote this next election to vote for someone who will be accountable for how they will take care of Portland and the rest of Oregon. Tina Kotek wants tolls on bridges and freeways. Someone is pushing for the OMSI area high-rise community. Why are we still paying for the arts tax? Why aren't criminals being put and kept in jail?
I really don't think " keep Portland weird" is

Did you know Portland has a workforce of volunteers ready to go for tasks that need to be done quickly? Look up "reserve army of labor."
Yea I would WAY rather they “cracked down” on car theft and the roving bands of tweekers over the spray paint. What a fucking joke.
Cleaning graffiti has been declared to be a hate crime, therefore it must be left up.
New D.A. that actually does his or her job would help.
Graffiti RULEZ f the cops 🚔
Graffiti is a bi product of a city that prioritizes wealth and commercialization over city planning and awareness. To me the real eye soar is all thease perfect shinny office buildings on water front propperty sitting empty in a city filled with homeless people. office buildings and commercial buildings do not work if the working class has no whare to live and no way to get the job. realestate companies refuse to come down on rent, so many who have been evicted will often take out their frustration through grafitti and other worse types of vandalism. It also doesnt help that large buisinesses have taken to trying to cheet and trick people out of their money, I was taken for over 2000 dollars last year by rip off artists. In a buisiness dominated society like this one we can expect less concern for human life and more on capitolization.

Wheeler promoted this stuff. Now when people coming to their senses
He should be made to pay for the cost to clean up by community service time.
The fact that it's just kids doing it makes it beyond law enforcement.
is it legal in Portland for someone under the age of 18 to purchase spray paint, for starters?
A 25-year-old is not a kid

There were some blocks without graffiti hmm a total of two that's funny
stop selling spray paint. it is not essential only convient. If a business needs it let them sign out on it no picture of the criminal..? there is something effete about your reporting, like the city government, reluctant to call something or someone what they are, fear of offending, a sentimentality in regard to criminal motives.

@@Stayup4661 absolutely false...its just his own vanity and being selfish. Nobody asked to see his tag, it creates pollution, destruction of people's property, sucks away time and is a complete selfish act. Instead of money directed to clean up crews, this money could be directed to installing wind farms and solar panels. Additionally his skill...bad. His composition....bad. Its 100% vanity and I'm unclear how you could be tricked into thinking its anything more. His tagging has 0 value and is a negative on society. Your comment...uneducated on all levels. He should pay the fines, be the one doing the clean up. And even after the "clean up" its not a no harm no foul situation. Even the clean up of paint gets washed away somewhere...into our water. Its absolute nonsense and crazy to defend his actions.
@@Stayup4661 honestly bob (if that is your real name) your logic is quite flawed...I'm not "saying its selfish" it is selfish as fact not opinion. Alot of this stuff is "power washed" off...not paint over paint. Really bad for the earth. Where do you think this run-off magically goes? And yes I blame the guy who sprayed the paint, who was not commissioned by these people nor the state, to be responsible for his own actions. I don't blame the paint maker, and I don't but most of the blame culture. Additionally, if his "culture" is making him be selfish..perhaps time to denounce any aspects of a culture making him be selfish and a dick. There is no point of creating jobs just for the point of creating jobs...jobs have value. And suggesting that there is equal value to create a cleanup crew job vs a job that creates food, better air, stuff with value...is ridiculous, short sighted, and just...not intelligent.
Gee, it seems to me that it must take some time to climb those utility poles and use markers and spray paint to mark signs with special slogans that are precisely done! How about saving some tax payer money by erecting cameras trained on these large signs and catch these grafitti thugs in action! Of course, that takes a police force willing to actually pursue and arrest these thugs and anti-graffiti laws stiff enough to make the assailants think twice about doing it again! As in homeless camp clean up, the authorities seem to be spending all of our money on repeated clean-ups, instead of on prevention!
