A difficult thing that. Doable, but not sure if worth the effort. You'd have to toggle between the two. And people might forget which they build at currently and get missaligned and/or deformed buildings.
You can, and probably should start the proper building of the generator past day 30, especially if you have the foreman shouting unlocked on the Order side. It's much easier when you only have to deal with the toxic gases for 1-2 days while you use the shoutie megaphone, agitators and emergency shift to build from ground to finished core stage in one go. I started the foundations on day 42 of Crags extreme with hazards turned on, generator was done by day 52 without rushed construction. I actually just wanted to see whether this was feasible at all, but it turned out to be the easier route. If you don't start the foundations, you can pick and choose exactly when those toxic gases appear, so you can just produce everything the different the stages need ahead of time, without worrying about safety. 11 bodies were in my snowpit at the end of it all, and none of them from working on the generator, or in production buildings.
Best builders strategy in found, build your economy fast. Food, steel, wood, coal, make all the components you will need. Then start the generator. No need to worry about gases
I know you did a no steamcore challenge already but doing it with settlements on canyon would be a bit more challenging. The catch is you have to support the settlements. So the early game could be much more difficult with the limited space and having to give away resources. You could call it the pro labor run lol
As a challenge could you try to make the largest city possible (population) by developing then extracting all settlement population, and try to make as many automatons as you can as they come up on the population screen.
I've noticed that your play style for frostpunk has changed over the last year. You should consider doing another utopia run using order this time around. Ideally without foremen or agitators, but that may be nigh impossible.
I know this was 3 years ago and you’ve moved on from Frostpunk for a while, but I do have a challenge for you. It is simply an extreme builders endless speedrun. Your goal is to build the generator as quickly as possible; ideally before the 3rd storm. I almost got it on my own play through and it was the hardest thing I’ve experienced in this game. It would be a good warmup (🥶) for Frostpunk 2 coming out soon.
Faith in general seems like a crutch to me the early law abilities are powerful Not sure about over powered but it's certainly easier early game (especially the extra medical)
Survivors stop spawning in the frostlands once you reach about 600 population. If you enable outposts though, you can import additional population. The game's not good at handling such high populations though.
Challenge: *Frostpunk Exporter* In this challenge, you must become the last ethical exporter of goods on the frozen shores of the Rifts map, where you must be up and running by day 50 or your playthrough ends by default. The tasks set out are as follows: -Endless Extreme Builder mode -Rifts map -Utopia (deathless, both hunter hangars AND hothouses, settlements ARE allowed, and order up to but excluding propaganda center) -Must have the generator fully operational by day 50 -Must have at LEAST 2 automatons by day 50 -Must have at least 1 of each infinite source by day 50; at least 1 fully operational coal mine, steelworks, hothouse, and wall drill. If any of the above terms are violated, you must reset and start anew. Good luck.
How about a Generator heat only run? No steam hubs, no heaters. It would make space around the generator very important, and a lot of people would be freezing in short order, but you could at least keep medical facilities functional.
@@DDRJake I have one other idea then, lifetime career employment. Once people are put to work in a building, they cannot be pulled back. That would hurt you on the inability to do your labor reallocation micromanagement. Plus you couldn't really use gathering posts in the early game, plus your cookhouse would have to be left running so you'd be losing more efficiency to eating and people would use more food from it being open all the time.

I dont know if you read these comments jake but why sawdust over soup? i thought u could use moonshine to boost morale and still get extra rations out of food
Sawdust produces twice as much extra food (50% boost instead of 25% from soup) Sawdust does not cause discontent. That meant the discontent savings can be spent on move overtime shifts and 24 hour shifts The amount of sick people from sawdust is negligible. 1 in 30 or somewhere around there. Easily offset by the enormous economic output of the other options Moonshine is still effective.
I would say why NOT sustain life? If you keep everybody from going gravely ill (which is not that hard to do assuming you know what you're doing) you can have an infirmary without even needing to deal with a gravely sick person until a storm rolls around.
