      In oregon you are no allowed to pump your own gas, so is not self serve and it sucks, if you happen to travel at night thru oregon you will find a lot of gas station closed, they want to change this law I hope they do!!

      im from finland small country
      thats our basic gas station we have those like 3 different in few km radius from where i live
      and oh was that gas cheap i have never heard of that cheap gas like 1 liter of 95 costs over 1.5 euros
      i am amazed and that small store is exactly like every store in here like i said before
      but in our gas stations they usually serve some warm things to buy and eat like hotdogs and something sweet and ALWAYS coffee
      well thats what finnish people drink a lot 1 euro 1 cup of coffee from a gas station sometimes 2 euros depends on the gas station

      I believe you are mistaken on what he means by different. Imagine going down the 401 and going into an On rout and it's just that tiny little station he showed. Yes, we do have small stations like that but we also have plenty of very large stations with restaurants and fast food and even gift shops, especially near a highway.

      The Redeye Jedi I used to deal condoms by the case. A case is over 1000 and cost me $90.00. A condom is both harmless and beneficial but the authorities did not want gfros taking measures to stop stds. A case sale was an easy $30.00. You would be surprised at how many people do not want condoms to be used.

    This station is actually pretty standard to the ones we have in central Ontario (Canada) ~200Km North of Toronto. We obviously have North American brands which would be higher quality, but there are a lot that are dinky and scuzzy. The bathrooms are notorious for being disgusting.

    • @bird718
      @bird718 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      those bathrooms are a last resort even then you have to pass on em because i seen a few where they had shit everywhere, like someones ass exploded on the walls etc... like once in the Bronx i got off the highway for gas and tried to use the bathroom and the toilet had a giant pile of crap, its like multiple people craped on top of crap, i was like HELL NO! and left, then there was one in NJ on rout 1 that had a glory hole i walked out as soon as i saw that.

    • @shepd3
      @shepd3 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was about to say exactly this (except for Southern Ontario)! I think he's been spoiled by Sheetz and Buc-ees in the US. Sometimes you'll find some nice extras (hot dogs and pop fountains) but I never expect that. I've been to several gas stations here that don't even have a store... Usually the few left that pump gas for you and have discount prices on the gas.

    • @Worldofourown2024
      @Worldofourown2024 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In many parts of the states, particularly urban areas, the bathrooms are locked and you have to ask for the key or to be let in. Most of ours have some hot food, sandwiches, coffee, and huge gallon sized sodas. If you get out in rural areas, they tend to be larger with large unlocked restrooms where it's truck stops, large stations with full sized stores, and plenty of rest areas with lots of room. It's always better to pull into a super Walmart for shopping and even to park over night to take a nap to avoid the high room prices.

    • @tektitetv
      @tektitetv 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Although come to think of it, we shouldn't be complaining. Even the worst public bathrooms in North America are better than the standard ones in China. At least we have toilets, with running water, and toilet paper, and privacy.
      On an unrelated topic, Mac's (Milk) or "Couche Tard" elsewhere has hot dogs, fountain drinks, some sandwiches and sometimes taquitos ready to eat. They're actually pretty good, and I hate myself for paying the ridiculous prices for them, but I do anyway :D

    • @Worldofourown2024
      @Worldofourown2024 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yes, I remember those ol' stinky wet hole in the floor Asian bathrooms where toilet tissue isn't a thing and maybe a blue bar of soap on a steel rod with only cold water is present and where hand washing isn't really a custom. Yes, outside of major urban centers, America has the best restroom facilities. In Western Europe or somewhere like NYC, finding a restroom is often hard to impossible as to discourage homelessness, but you usually have to pay at least 1 Euro coin such as in a train station to go through a turn style where there still exists, an ol' bathroom. Easy to find a place to pee in Asia even in big cities, but holding your breath long enough is key to surviving.

    That's wine isn't crappy. I guess it depends on your standards. But its an Australian 2012 Shiraz Penfolds bin 28. Cost around $40 au

    • @s3077769
      @s3077769 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Agreed 解波波
      But I think he must generalise a lot. Any wine sold at a petrol station must be crappy. But that was a very good wine at a fair price. All wine drinking Australians can see it straight away.
      I would only buy it to look good around people and buy cheaper wine for myself.

      Penfolds make some of the best red wines in the world, especially Shiraz. Bin 28 is a good wine (above "good" average) and costs the same in Australia and most parts of the world. Some of top Penfolds wines retail for a few thousand dollars. I would be asking if it is a fake bottle of Penfolds.

      You are confusing irony with coincidence
      1.Irony refers to something happening or something said about someone or some situation where the underlying meaning is the exact opposite of the literal meaning. Irony can be defined in many other ways, but this is one of the most accepted ways to define it and describe it.
      2.Coincidence is when two or more than two events happen of striking similarity at one particular time by accident or by chance.
      In china.... with a mirror made in china... ...Similarity......therefore....Coincidence

      Karl P calm down dude, it has nothing to do with Penfolds, it could be French VOP he'll still complain since it's in a Chinese store, it has to be crappy. However, Penfolds usually cost less than 20AUD if you buy it online (yes, online) in China, but way higher in a convenience store like this or in a restaurant (50AUD for a yellowtail).

    Seeing as you haven't been in South Africa in a while let me update you on what our Fuel stations are like. They are constantly full of taxi's and each one has it's back wheel where you fill the petrol up on a ramp. Supposedly this allows more fuel into the tank and they will rock the vehicle to get any air bubbles out so they can get a few more drops in the tank. The result is that you wait forever before you can fill your own tank and the attendant will fill up until it almost spills out instead of stopping when it clicks off automatically if you ask him to fill up. If you are a white guy sitting in your car you will find yourself constantly being harassed by beggars asking for change which is annoying ( have to get my windows tinted ). Oh and you may get robbed or hijacked to.

      Oregon is also a "no self serve" state. I guess the never-ending parade of self-serve gas station fires and deadly incidents we see on the news each and every day serve as a warning as to the dangers of the activity. • @MattsSaltwaterFishing
      @MattsSaltwaterFishing 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Winston, sorry to say but that "petrol station" is very similar to what you find in America (minus the attendant in most states). The only difference would be the selection of snacks and lack of a hot coffee and slurpee machine. Usually the typical gas station has all sorts of candies, chips, drinks (energy, water, soda, tea, beer), cigarettes, dip and of course beef jerky! Now of course depending on location some places have hot food that is cooked on the hour and the place down the street from me cooks fresh breakfast tacos in the morning lol.
      Some places run smaller, some the same size and some a lot larger. Once in awhile you will run into an old gas station that is questionable whether or not the gas pump still works or not but a majority have been knocked down and replaced with modernized gas stations such as the one you see in your video (plus or minus little things here and there).

      Not always. Many are so small that the washrooms must be located outside at the back corner, and you actually need to ask for a key. I'm talking about the gas stations that are within proximity of shopping areas and fast food restarutant. There is simply no demand for a large store when you have walmart and mcdonalds right next to it.

    Nice video. In the late 1960's through the early 1970's, I worked at couple of gas stations, self supporting my way through college in los Angeles, California. There were no self-service gas stations in those days. The gas prices at the time were $0.25 to $0.35 per gallon. I think the self-service gas stations began to pop up in the 1980s. Now, I think all of the gas stations are self-service. There is a good thing on some of today's gas station. It is the self-service car wash - very convenient. I use it and will continue to use it.

    I'm in the US, and honestly most gas stations are like this one you showed, with the exception of stations in rest stops and exits along the interstate highways which tend to be large and have restaurants. In the suburbs and cities, its usually small stores with the basics like this one (albeit more selection for the same space) and they're usually kind of dirty.

    • @serpentza
      @serpentza  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not convinced, I drove 10,000kms from west to east and back again and stopped at many gas stations on the interstates and off in towns and cities, and 98.7% of them were bigger and better stocked full of cool things to buy, maybe you live in a rural area or something?

    • @ayoung17huang
      @ayoung17huang 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      serpentza Hi Winston maybe that's because you stopped by these gas station along the interstate highways they are relatively big because a lot of traffic. But some ones in the rural area are relatively small. As small as the one in this vlog . But generally speaking the convenience store in a gas station in China is generally smaller than in the US.

    • @YZ-dm4jv
      @YZ-dm4jv 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      serpentza I agree with u somehow. Here in US , most of gas stations have their own supermarket or even a nice food plaza on highway. Some of the gas stations are actually belonging to those chain supermarket, like 7-Eleven, Giant, Costco etc. Also, there are indeed many many crap gas stations....No stuff, no convenient store...Kind of scary though..

    • @johns4651
      @johns4651 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Momokawayum
      @Momokawayum 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      serpentza I live in the Northeast US about 14 miles from a major city where it is pretty densely packed. I would say a majority of the gas stations are similar to the one in the video. There are also smaller ones and many attached to a garage fluid changes or tire service and those typically only have a vending machine. Of course there are super size ones as well that are mostly off the main freeways that basically act as an oasis for long trips between major cities. There is a mix of self serve and full service stations as well.
      From what I can tell, there isn't a whole lot of difference between what I saw in the video from what we have here other than the fact that one you visited here was super clean.

    G'day,
    So, the Shop has Chicken-Feet in a Bag, and Alcohol..., neither of which would be in the Shops at Australian "Petrol" Stations (we call them "Service" Stations, a relic of the days when the Blacksmith learned to keep a Model-T Ford running & then began selling Fuel & Oil as well as doing Mechanical Repairs.)....; but the rest of the variety seems very similar, though Hot & Cold Food (Pre-packed Sandwiches & Meat Pies..), and Tea/Coffee are available in Oz Fuelstops - most of which are Self-Serve.
    Regards Oz Fuel Prices, I'm in Rural NSW, & 95-Octane was $1.43/Litre (Oz$) just 3 days ago, so (Aus)$6.492 per Imperial Gallon, or (Aus)$5.50 per US Gallon (equals US$4.40 per US Gallon)...
    It's tricky to compare Litres in China with US Gallons if one is thinking in Imperial Gallons...
    Have fun,
    ;-p
    Ciao !

      WarblesOnALot I'm from Qld and I've always known them as petrol station although some people call them service station although you get none 😂. Many of them now have a small convenience store attached to them 7-11, coles xpress I think bp has some sort of wollies store. I never really noticed how useful they were until I moved to Germany 2 years ago. Here, at least in Bavaria where I am, you can only get snacks and drinks, there are some very few that have a few extra things but not much. The first few months here I would find myself needing something on a Sunday and as supermarkets are closed on Sundays I would head to the petrol station only to find most of them don't even have the basics like toilet paper. I really miss the petrol stations back home. By the way, fuel is not as expensive here as people back home think it is.

      In the US 95 octane is not sold but its equivalent to 91. Same octane just the countries use a different formula.87/89/91 is equal to 91/95/98. 91/95 ocatane is no where near $4.40 a gallon nor has it ever been. It did top out near $4.00 a few years ago, however right now its around $2.50-$3.00. It does vary in different parts of the country places like California and New York are always a bit more expensive then places like Ohio and Illinois.

    This gas station is pretty much just like the typical Mobil or Sunoco stations that were built all across the US up until the 1990s or so. So, in America, we have roughly four different styles of gas stations; 1) Several gas pumps under canopy with a small booth that sells few items through a walk-up window. These stations mostly just sell cigarettes, a small selection of candy bars and gum, and lottery tickets. 2) Small convenience store very similar to the one you showed in this video branded as a major first or second-tier petroleum company. 3) Same as #2, with attached service garage. 4) Mini-mart with anywhere from eight to sixteen gas pumps. 5) Larger stations with cafes, often featuring a chain restaurant in the same building (Dunkin Donuts, Quiznos Sub, Subway, etc). and 5) Truck stops. Truck stops will often include a full-service restaurant, shower stalls, small stores that sell damn near everything including small appliances, and will occasionally have more than one restaurant in the same building. In America, it's all about driving and eating. That's about all we do.

      I agree 100%. But each station should have an attendant, with a minimum of training, at least on safety, shut off of pumps, how to use a fire extinguisher, etc.

    • @alexjamesbaker
      @alexjamesbaker 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am in Canada and worked at a gas station as an attendant. My 'training' consisted of the shut off button and absorbent (green kitty litter as far as I can tell) was located. Never even given an explanation of when either would be necessary to use. Most of these places don't follow the safety rules that are in place, just enforce the ones that have already been set and we'd probably be ok

    • @penitent2401
      @penitent2401 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      well, the shut off button is used when there's a leak you need to shut off, and the sand spill kit is used to clean up the spill on the floor. if you want further training, step by step instructions is written next to he buttons and on the spill kits.

      It's even higher in Europe like $6 a gallon, but $2.30 in the states now. Gas is very pricey like that in Thailand too, but most drive motor bikes so you only buy 1 or 2 liters instead of 15 or 30. It was ,much higher all across the board like 5 years ago.

    As a half Filipino, the gas stations in Asia work pretty much the same, attendants will go up to you, ask what kind of petrol you need and they'll fill it up. Even when you need to get something simple done like washing your windows, in the Philippines they won't hesitate, sometimes once you pull up some attendants would gladly help you out and clean your windows. Also, Pocari Sweat; great thing to buy!! Love that drink!

    Actually, the wine you showed in the video, which was on display at the Chinese petrol station, is quite an old, well-known & reputable brand of Australian wine. In particular, the Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz, which was on display sells for anywhere between about A$35 to A$50 in Australia, depending on where one buys it, & the year is was made. Not only is it recognised as a good quality wine, but if it's sold at that price - one would automatically expect it to be good quality. So, the fact that it's selling for around US$31 in a convenience store attached to a Chinese petrol station, is probably not such a bad price - because convenience store prices are usually much higher than elsewhere in any case. So it does rather surprise me that it was referred to as a "crappy" wine - because most people who know anything about wine, would not refer to it as such. So I think we can probably fairly safely assume that the presenter does not really know much about wine.
    Also, "petrol" is the correct, accepted & standard word used in most English-speaking countries - except in the US, where the word "gas" is used. However the use of the word "gas" in the US is in reality a misnomer & a mistake, because petrol/petroleum is actually a liquid & not a gas at all - so the correct word to use is "petrol".

      @roberthardy5171 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lol everyone knows petrol is not a gas, the term gas as used in America is short for “gasoline”. Therefore I think we can safely assume the commenter here does not know much about how these English terms are used or where they come from.

These conversations always end with "but you are technically a foreigner in South Africa and your ancestors come from England so you are really English not South African" even though he's only got a South African passport and his family has been in South Africa for many generations. I know because I'm British South African (currently now a NZ citizen) with the same kind of lineage as him (mother has British passport but I'm too far removed to have one myself) and I've had the same conversation a number of times (though most Caucasians understand it our "international students" take some explaining).

    I 100% disagree that people in the US are luck that petrol is cheap. The reason it is that way is because there is a lack of public transport and driving is pretty much a necessity for most people in the US. Not only does the government subsidies companies, they also maintain a large store of the stuff so that if there is a shortage or price hike, they can supplement and control the prices. Also, since most Americans are left with no other choice of transportation there are that many more customers which brings the cost down.

    We in America say "fuel gauge." We usually use the term "fuel." "Gas" is pretty common and "petrol" is never used. But the term "fuel" is equally used as "gas." So we would say "my fuel gauge is on empty." or "I guess I need gas" or "fuel." Gas doesn't mean "gasseous" or "the phase state of gasoline." the term "gas" is the short version of "gasoline."

They make their money with the chocolate bars / chips / softdrinks, etc
