I'm 68 years old and have been involved in the building of two houses for the family. It's hard work and a lot of things to keep going but do not fear. One day at a time and it'll be finished sooner than later. A way to determine how you're progressing is to remember that when the sheetrock is up, you're halfway finished. At least that's what I've been told and it seems to hold true. Hopefully you and the missus will be able to come together when it comes time to select all the trimmings at the end. God bless you, Nick, Bob and your families.
Plus ..I think we can all agree that the Welker's more than deserve this...they have worked hard, saved, remained humble and just done so much good, I am overjoyed to see this happening for them. You cheer for people like this, rather than those that are boastful and live in excess. God bless you all
Super insulate the whole home if you have not thought about it already. And passive solar windows for added warmth in the winter. Glad your house is getting started.
I know what you mean about radiant floors, used them in an old barn conversion built in 1711 in Brittany, France. It was a huge project, 15000 square feet, we put in a suspended concrete floor upstairs, keeping all the original oak beams as decoration. Despite the expense, so economical to use, less than $1000 per year thanks to 2 probes 200 feet deep picking up the earth's stable year round temperature.
Your decision about radiant heat is your best decision so far I’ve lived in houses that had radiant heat I’ve put radiant heat in my last houses there’s no beating it Don’t Scrimp on your water heater or boiler natural gas if you have availability or propane you can’t go wrong Once your floor gets warm you can open your windows and still stay warm the heat dose not blow out the door every time you open it You can also place it under your upstairs floors it just staples to your floor joist or you could use a thin concrete
Not a farmer but watch your videos. Thankyou. Your family is so humble and nice to see when all you read is negative stuff in media. Also, I am learning about farming. Thank you.
You'll LOVE the heated floor. Friends have it in their basement. While slowly building their dream log cabin house. They lived in the basement for a year or so while they built it. Said it was great to be able to walk around without slippers down there. Also so nice working on a vehicle in a garage as the floor is warm. Hope the family and you are doing well. Take care - be safe and God Bless.
Don't forget to build a form for a parking/driveway, it's a great way to "rinse out" the concrete trucks and have a nice spot to park that can't get muddy.
There's a cheaper way to get essentially the same seal without the risks of the 21st century version of asbestos. After sheathing it in OSB or whatever you then screw 2inch foam on the outside and use 2x4 strapping on top of that to screw siding to. You then insulate the wall cavity with normal batting. We keep a 36x60 house cool in South Dakota with a single window AC unit done that way.
@@ryanlamfers8692 if your doing that it would be better to get the sheathing that has it glued to the back that way the insulation is on the inside of the moisture barrier like it should be
@@RedneckRanger27 you use the pink foam board and it's pretty well waterproof on it's own. But there's no reason you couldn't wrap around the foam board. I'm guessing they think their Zip board, the brand I know of, is worth more than it is.
You have earned it ! Twice fold ! You will knock out dept for this project Leg Arm's ! Your wife will Love you ! God I wish I was young again ! So great to see young men making shit happen ! God Bless and enjoy Easter ! We are greatful that our savior redeemed us all !
When it was said we don't have a lot to look at. I thought, my property is not big enough to turn one of your guys tractors around on. I am happy with my life, as I am sure you are with yours. Seems your family is blessed, as is mine. May the Welkers have a Blessed day.
You never really realize how beautiful the background of your farm is until you get open view shots. We're always so focused on the fields, equipment, and people, that we really never get to stop and enjoy the view of the hills and mountains. Y'all really do live in a beautiful place.
Exciting times for the Welker Family! Future is so bright for you all and your growing families. Blessings on your undertakings as you work to provide for your family and provide food for the rest if us too
Good to see it start. Try not to stress to much, it will all work out as you and your family always seem to use "All due Diligence" in all you do. Your figure out what "things" that come up, and they will, and you will have a nice home for your family an you to enjoy. That is the AMERICAN DREAM and I for one fell proud of you and your entire family that you all that you are. That is what makes us strong enough to overcome, friends and family they are what make use great. GOOD JOB!
There is something about building a house for your family. Radiant floor heat is the only way to heat. It is a simple system to install, just make sure you insullate under the concrete. Laying wire mesh with a 6"x 6" grid pattern works really well to fasten your tubing to with zip ties, plus you can get your kids involved. Been heating my basement and garage, and also the farm shop for years and wouldn't be with out it.
Exciting the time in your life. Remember to take some pictures along the way. Things change and it is sometimes difficult to remember what it was like. Enjoy the challenges. It takes time. 😊
I assume we drove near you last week, wife has relatives in Kalispell so we drove out there and on the way back to Minnesota we took highway 2 through Shelby. You will love the heated floors, we have a pole barn house in Minnesota and even with our winters it is very nice, we don't even have a furnace.
I put radiant floor heat in my 60x66 shop all by myself, including wiring and plumbing the zones. I love it, my suggestion is to use the interlocking foam that holds the tubing. It looks like lego base sheets, makes life easy and my concrete was poured in 1 sheet with no saw cuts or expansion joints and I have ZERO cracks 7 years later in a frost and freeze state.
Scott, we put radiant heat in the basement and garage when we built our house 12 years ago. We love it. But our basement we don’t turn on anymore because it stays 68 all winter long without any additional heat. We live much further south of you, in South Dakota. Let me know if you want any suggestions from our experience. I’m surprised that you don’t have frost, ours isn’t all out yet.
I built ICF 10 years ago. Amazing how very few are aware of this. Make sure you put insulation under your basement floor. There are special slabs of insulation for this. They are about 4" thick and are foil backed on one side and reflect heat back to your house instead of you heating the soil below the house. Well worth the cost. The generator is a great investment too. You seem to be thinking of everything.
That smile on your face when talking about that excavator priceless!!! Six months tops and you'll be the new owner of an excavator!!!! LOL ❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦❤️❤️🇺🇸
That ICF Block basement is the way to go ! My new house was built with it ! Love it the basement is warm in the winter and cool in the summer ! the Best Money spent!and put the thermal beak 2'x2' on the floor .
Scott the risk is define worth the reward on this job! The plans look good. And families and love great best in a house with a good foundation and good people.your house will be just fine!

Think about the long run....my older friends built their house over 40 years ago and they planned for the future. Wider doors for wheel chairs and maybe hospital beds, higher plug-ins, wider hallways capable for wheel chairs if and when the time came and no stairs for when they got older they may not have been capable of climbing!! Oh and a walk out basement, not only good for looks but moving furniture in and out. Good luck!
Legarms, I'm so excited for you. I get the biggest kick out of seeing how much fun you have around machinery. I was and am the same way! Blessings from Ohio from Pastor Bill!
Really happy for you. Totally understand how excited you are and getting out of a trailer house. We lived in one when we first got married. Sometimes the walls felt like they were closing in on us while living in a tunnel
We did the same thing as you are doing at a young age many years ago. I know the feelings you have, rather awe inspiring to say the least. It was way cheaper back in 1975, but it still felt expensive. It has been a wonderful ride to today. Good luck, keep your head up, and soon it will all be yours!
you'll love the in floor heat, e did that to our new shop and its one of the best things we ever did, you'll want to put some high density insulation underneath the concrete as well. We put it on top of the gravel and stapled the heat pipes to the insulation and poured the concrete right on top. spray foam is also a good idea instead of normal bat insulation.
We install in floor heat as it’s part of HVAC. All the jobs I’ve been on, the tubes go on top of foam. Foam has indentations for the tubes. Basically made for it.
ours were just normal flat 4X8 sheets. and we seen several different ways of holding the pipe down and decided that stapling them down was the easiest way to go. our neighbor did in floor heat long before it was well known and he just tied it off to the rebar and didn't have any insulation, so the ground stays thawed several feet away from the building even in the -20s we get.
Having put in many a basement and seeing bad digs. Well, your guy did a great job. and to get a skid steer down there is a major time and back saver. Good luck on the foundation work. That is where you want to make triple sure, it's correct. God Bless the Welker clan. May you get all the moisture you need to harvest a huge crop.

Congrats on building your home! I have to admit that digging a large hole with a huge excavator looks like a ton of fun regardless of the reason :)
You are going to thank yourself for putting in radiant in the basement and garage. A little more cash up front but so worth it. Excited for you guys!

Awesome, yeah we used those big Lego forms 22yrs ago and they were a time saver big time. You’ll have to get yer poplar and evergreens in pronto
Super smart using the ICF foundation! Radiant floors too! AWESOME!
Congratulations to you and your family on the ground breaking. As hard as you all work to feed us you and family are due a nice new home.
Congrats Scott. New home on the way. Always exciting.
