Interesting live version of this great song, but WOW! I looked up that background story, & it was tragic. beautiful, & amazing - all wrapped up into one!!
I used to cover this song, and Lawyers Guns & Money back when I had a gigging band, and they were always my favorites to play. These days when I try to play Renegade, it chokes me up sometimes. Zevon's music and the spirit that created it will always live on.
I am Sam Guest I was a Renagade in 72 and 73 ! I scored the winning try, against Florida in 73. Mike Mcgwiggin was captain that year! Primo Greppi was an expatriate on that team, Mike Duggan was on that team! My memory has dimmed since then, best time of my life, so far!!!
WARREN BY GOD ZEVON! NO ONE EVER EQUALLED HIM IN MY EYES. NO ONE EVER *WILL* GOLDEN TROUBADOUR. PIANO FIGHTER PAR EXCELLENCE. I SHALL WORSHIP HIM TIL THE DAY I SEE HIM AGAIN. I, TOO, AM A RENEGADE. BUT NOT IN *HIS* IMAGE. NO ONE *CAN* BE. LIVE FOREVER, WARREN.
I second the comment above. Warren was an intellectual. Probably the most intelligent pop songer writer in history. The only one close was Jim Morrison, whose IQ was 140. Warren's was 160. Certainly geniuses like Zevon are misunderstood. But Warren kept his "Individualty" until the end. Ask Hunter Thompson, another genius, and Warren's mentor who is also gone.
Ah, Warren...my Hero, my Legend, my God of Music....I'd be scared of what they tell me I'm facing, if it weren't for you. Thank you for everything, you Renegade, you! I'll be seeing you real soon. My ride's here...
Zevon,J. Browne,J.Taylor and a few more origonals put out music from the heart and soul. Alot of the rest put out a profit driven product no different that McDonalds. Zevon had a way. his way. shame hes gone but these guys will never be gone.
My goodness. The legend continues. If u don't get goosebumps I don't know what to tell ya . Rip
His ghost lives on through his music live forever

As a former rugby player I just want to say the story behind the song is fantastic! And only makes all of it better. God bless Warren Zevon.
Can you share the story you speak of? Thanks

This man. Beyond beautiful. This is Usa for me.
Warren was always at his best at the piano. So moving ...

perfect example of when less is more ... a violin and the man who "would rather break than bend" ... powerful
I still miss this man.
