There’s a TH-cam video of super early No Doubt playing outdoors at a college or festival, and you can see Brad from Sublime in the crowd running in a mosh circle. Pretty cool video.
No Doubt was originally a Ska band where the music takes influences from reggae. Later on they went a little bit more Poppy, punk Rock. Then Gwen Stefani went on her own and went full pop and girl power in the age of Britney Spears and J-Lo
Oh those times when music was music and artists didnt care about what would sell or not as much as they do today, and were just happy to be themselves out there. Yes it was really popular, they were popular and she was amazing. Just watch her performing live back then... She was pure energy!
They're from Orange County, near my hometown. We used to see them all the time live before they got signed to a record label. Have you guys done Just a Girl yet?
I'm genuinely jealous. Not that anyone knows who he is but a friend became a dj in high school, Rodi Styles is his old Dj name now it's Somna. Watched this dude go from playing dingy community centers to massive raves to living in England winning EDM awards. Apparently in the trance / hardstyle community he's HUGE. I only tell this story because it's awesome watching a band or musician grow
I've always heard that No Doubt began as a few talented teenagers playing in a garage in Anaheim, California in the mid-80s. In any case they soon added more talent and became a powerhouse band of the 90s.
No Doubt was HUGE back when I was in school, I was 13 when this song came out, Gwen has been around forever! This song and album were huge, everyone knew of it and them back then!
This song was like the 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand' of 1995. You couldn't walk 27 feet without hearing it. So, when it come to popularity this is easily their biggest smash. They have had others but not as ubiquitous as this song. It just came out a long time ago is all.
She and her brother started the band as teenagers and had huge success, she is music and fashion icon. Lots of music by her. And the videos are always good.
This was definitely a hit as mentioned in other comments, I loved No Doubt from beginning to end! Please, please, also try another one of their first, Sunday Morning, and then their last hit song, It's My Life. The video for the last song is symbolic of them splitting as well, very great song and video. I will also add, it is funny for us women to know Gwen did date one of the band members and as she sings about their break up and hurt, he's playing the music lol
This was all over the radio and MTV back in the day. Think she wrote this after breaking up with one of the other band members or something like that. The Official video is an interesting watch. Has some meaning to it.
This song was massive back in the 90’s, was almost overplayed at one point. Actually a departure from their earlier punk/ska roots, which was energetic rock and reggae combined. This song showed a more sophisticated side to their sound. To get of an idea the sound they were more known for check out "Spiderwebs" and "Just a Girl." Kinda strange people don’t really remember Gwen as the bad @$$ rocker she was, but makes sense considering how long ago her transition to solo pop star was. Just makes me feel old 🤦🏻♂️😅
If you want to hear something cool from Gwen, check out I Saw Red. It’s a duet with the guys from Sublime. She and Bradley play off each other really well. And as usual her voice is amazing.
I think what Lexi was saying was Ska 😂 this song and No Doubt were huge back then. Gwen Stefani can really sing. I was obsessed with this album when I was 8. Please do more No Doubt, I’d recommend “Just a Girl” or “Sunday Morning”. Great reaction guys 🙋🏻♀️👍🏼👏🏼🙌🏼💜🇨🇦
Ugh, you'd hear some interesting stuff on No Doubt 'Tragic Kingdom. It's just a fantastic album. It was like the the first cd I ever bought. The entire band just kills it, great front to back, and it's Gwen in her prime roots before she went solo (which is also great) I'd suggest 'Spiderwebs', 'Different People', or 'Sunday Morning'. 'Don't Speak' is a soft jam. The rest of their stuff is generally faster ska style.

No Doubt was big in the 90's and this song, while great, isn't their usual sound. They're usually more Ska and Punk. Ska is Reggae mixed with Punk. The band Sublime was also very much Ska. Gwen Stefani was big wayyyyy before Holla Back Girl came out. Gwen and No Doubt have been around since the early 90's.
Ska (/skɑː/; Jamaican: [skjæ]) is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s and was the precursor to rocksteady and reggae. It combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. Ska is characterized by a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the off beat.
@@Letmegetthatforyou Third wave ska was actually referred to as ska-punk cuz it had elements of both. First wave ska was in the 1960s in Jamaica and was a faster precursor to reggae, second wave was late 70s-early 80s mostly in the UK, third wave was American in the 90s and kind of a mix of ska and punk. No Doubt was third wave.
Absolutely! My bad. I was thinking about something else. I remember the spooky feel to the song. It was one of my favorites. It had a subdued, angry feel to it. No doubt remade it into some type of overt persecution complex. Not as poignant.
🤯🤯🤯 Ok, “ska,” pronounced Sk-ah. Ska is a musical genre born out of Jamaica, (out of Ska comes Reggae & Rocksteady.) Ska/Reggae travels from Jamaica to the UK & the US with immigrants, it catches on mostly with the non-racist punks and the second-wave of ska is born into existence-Madness, The Specials, etc. No Doubt was originally a ska band that was a part of ska’s Third Wave-Against All Authority, Catch 22, Link 80, Mustard Plug, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Save Ferris, etc.-Several members departed before the band became the four-piece you just heard. Tragic Kingdom, (the album featuring the hit single you just heard is the band’s third album.) Yeah, this song was EXTREMELY popular, but about ten years before Gwen Stefani’s solo album featuring, “Hollaback Girl.” I would’ve recommended “Spiderwebs,” or the obvious track off this album, “Just A Girl.” “Don’t Speak,” kinda of the first big swing away from their more Ska/OC roots. After Tragic Kingdom the band blasts off into pop-stardom. With that said, the whole album is phenomenal. If ya wanna checkout these guys with Davey Havock, (AFI/Blaqk Audio/XTRMST,) instead of Gwen Stefani, it’s a band called Dreamcar.
Before Holler Back Girl and Gwen being a solo artist, she got famous as the lead singer of No Doubt. They had a lot of hits but this was probably their biggest. Was literally on the radio night and day when it came out. Surprised you guys didn’t hear it as kids. Love this track.
Would love to hear "Just a Girl," and "Excuse me Mister" off the same album. Then it would be awesome to hear you explore the ska genre a little more. Sublime would be a good offshoot, then maybe some Operation Ivy? Then, that's a pretty good lead into some reggae? A little Bob Marley, maybe "Concrete Jungle?" Sounds like a plan Stan.
No Doubt was originally a ska band! ( you said it right 1st time). Their first hit "I'm Just a Girl" was probably the best example of their ska style, just as far as actual hits go ( unless I'm forgetting something!) But generally they are fun and so is she, but like any good performer, they are multifaceted and also evolved with time just like we all do. I actually saw them live at Jones Beach, NY. They / Gwen has SO MUCH ENERGY, it was fun as hell! And she CAN SING LIVE!!!!!
Back when Gwen was f'n cool, and not a Hollywood lizard person. I miss Ska Gwen so much!! This was written about the bassist Tony, cuz they dated. Then she dated and married Gavin from Bush, who you also need to check out!

only one masterpiece out of "Tragic Kingdom" Not only the best No Doubt album imo, but also one of the best albums on the 1990s from one of its best bands. I saw No Doubt live in 2009 in the Verizon Amphiteater and they rocked the entire time. Love Gwen, love love this band
If you want an idea of what No Doubt’s ska sounds like, “Different People” is a good introduction. But honestly you can’t go wrong with the whole Tragic Kingdom album.
The album Tragic Kingdom is what made them famous. I was obsessed with No Doubt and Gwen when I was growing up in the 90's. I was never a big fan of her pop music, but her ska era was amazing.
@@samot4677 Their sound is more Sublime and the Might, Mighty Bosstones (both ska bands) than anything like Fugazi, Black Flag, Fear, The Circle Jerks, The Descendants, The Ramones, The Dead Milkmen, Minor Threat, Bad Religion, etc, etc. They picked up a label as being "Ska Punk" which I can't think of any other band that ever fit into that category, from the media, not from fans when they first came out on MTV trying to put them on the "Cutting Edge", lol.
Then Gwen Stefani went on her own and went full pop and girl power in the age of Britney Spears and J-Lo
relating cardi b to Gwen is like relating dumb and dumber to Einstein
Both excel in creating energetic and catchy music
Dumb and dumber was a genius Buddy comedy and Einstein was a biographical movie
Lol
YES😊 😂
@@juliancornejo1402 in your dreams 😂
😂😂😂
This song was the freaking ANTHEM for women who had breakups in the 90’s. Huge song.
Oh those times when music was music and artists didnt care about what would sell or not as much as they do today, and were just happy to be themselves out there. Yes it was really popular, they were popular and she was amazing. Just watch her performing live back then... She was pure energy!
Just found out about you guys last night. I binged so much. You’re my new favorite channel. Keep up the greatness!
“Just a girl”, and “spiderwebs” are gold no doubt tracks
No Doubt was a really great live band. They brought so much energy in their shows.
They're from Orange County, near my hometown. We used to see them all the time live before they got signed to a record label. Have you guys done Just a Girl yet?
Wow, nice
I'm genuinely jealous. Not that anyone knows who he is but a friend became a dj in high school, Rodi Styles is his old Dj name now it's Somna. Watched this dude go from playing dingy community centers to massive raves to living in England winning EDM awards. Apparently in the trance / hardstyle community he's HUGE. I only tell this story because it's awesome watching a band or musician grow
I build custom guitar pickups and one of my signature artists also grew up in OC and use to go to parties with Gwen and Brad Noel
This song was very popular, along with the album it was on. Gwen got famous off of this album, which allowed her to even have a solo career after.
This song is a total legend. Gwen Stefanie is a queen of pop, punk and rock.. she sits on the throne nicely 👌
I used to love No Doubt. I saw them open for 311 before this record was released. They were SO good live!
Im forty and im still into Ska, thx to the beauty of Gwen and No Doubt🏁
The Return of Saturn album in it’s entirety is a must listen ❤️
I actually like that one as much if not more than Tragic Kingdom. Feel I might be in the minority though.
@@TheMartinChronicles I’m with you. They’re both great albums but ROS is so much deeper to me.
She and her brother started the band as teenagers and had huge success, she is music and fashion icon. Lots of music by her. And the videos are always good.
This song was huge in the 90s.
The climb …… such a great song and underrated from Tragic Kingdom …
This song was massive back in the 90’s, was almost overplayed at one point. Actually a departure from their earlier punk/ska roots, which was energetic rock and reggae combined. This song showed a more sophisticated side to their sound. To get of an idea the sound they were more known for check out "Spiderwebs" and "Just a Girl." Kinda strange people don’t really remember Gwen as the bad @$$ rocker she was, but makes sense considering how long ago her transition to solo pop star was. Just makes me feel old 🤦🏻♂️😅
somehow this is the song that always puts me back in my teenage years in the 90s.
It has something special even i am not a No Doubt Fan
B&L, another powerful vocalist is Aimee Mann. Try 'Til Tuesday "Voices Carry"
That or maybe Martika's song Toy Soldier. :)
Aimee Mann has continued to make amazing solo music . It just doesn't chart.
“Shots fired” 🤣🤣🤣 I love you guys 🤣
Ugh, you'd hear some interesting stuff on No Doubt 'Tragic Kingdom. It's just a fantastic album. It was like the the first cd I ever bought. The entire band just kills it, great front to back, and it's Gwen in her prime roots before she went solo (which is also great)
I'd suggest 'Spiderwebs', 'Different People', or 'Sunday Morning'.
'Don't Speak' is a soft jam. The rest of their stuff is generally faster ska style.
This song is so emotional. You can feel every note. She has such a cute voice, it pains me to hear her so heartbroken. Especially the end.
just a girl, by no doubt, put them on the map... and still is the best song of her entire career
Most popular.... yes. Best? Absolutely not.
@@Tateorsomething certainly wasn't as popular as the hits that came later...best, yes... before selling out took over completely
@@notimportant3686 I just meant that it is not their BEST song. Good song, but not their best. Not even the best on that album.
@@Tateorsomething right.... and then i corrected you... win/win
@@notimportant3686 you cannot "correct" someone with misinformation, sir.
This was super popular when it was out, man I the nostalgia with this song. Great reaction.
Yes, this is Gwen Stefani when she still was cool.
lol
She is still one of the coolest cats out there.
You said it.
she's 52 with three kids give her a break
@@seanbyrd9164 she's 52 with three kids give her a break. hher llast two albums weree #1 this is what the true feels like, and her holiday album you make it feel like christmas
the 90s was a period where everyone went nuts and tried all kinds of things musically, a wonderful time to be a music fan
No Doubt was big in the 90's and this song, while great, isn't their
usual sound. They're usually more Ska and Punk. Ska is Reggae mixed with
Punk. The band Sublime was also very much Ska. Gwen Stefani was big
wayyyyy before Holla Back Girl came out. Gwen and No Doubt have been
around since the early 90's.
No, ska is not a mix of punk and reggae . Ska is older then both of them.
@@stevecarey2030 Ska is still not Reggae mixed with Punk. Ska-Punk is a fusion genre like Psychobilly or Rapcore for example. :)
This song and bullet with butterfly wings were on the radio every day idk what year it was but I remember hearing it all the time
You guys should react to…
No Doubt - It's My Life
🎸🤘
No, they should react to the original.
Right, THE THE. The original is superior. Covers are rarely better. No Doubt removes something essential to the haunting mood; the existential angst.
@@bellodrade - The original is not from THE THE, it's from Talk Talk. ; )
Absolutely! My bad. I was thinking about something else. I remember the spooky feel to the song. It was one of my favorites. It had a subdued, angry feel to it. No doubt remade it into some type of overt persecution complex. Not as poignant.
I never realized until recently how awesome Gwen actually was in this band. I remember buying this album from Blockbuster, that's how long ago it was.
Tragic Kingdom, (the album featuring the hit single you just heard is the band’s third album.)
Yeah, this song was EXTREMELY popular, but about ten years before Gwen Stefani’s solo album featuring, “Hollaback Girl.”
I would’ve recommended “Spiderwebs,” or the obvious track off this album, “Just A Girl.” “Don’t Speak,” kinda of the first big swing away from their more Ska/OC roots.
Took the words out of my mouth. Only No Doubt's first album was really ska. If you want to experience "Ska" No Doubt, try "Trapped in a Box"
Thank you, I was going to comment this if I did not see that someone had.
I’ve just gotta throw Operation Ivy in there. That is all.
Man, I can't get enough of Gwen's voice.
Have to check out post modern jukebox. They cover songs in a different style. They did this. There are tons.
Haley can sing, Gwen is terrible
The official video has almost a billion views. Yeah, it was a hit lol.
React to “just a girl” or “spiderwebs” both fantastic songs by them :)
Lizard person LOL
Nailed Brad on all fronts. NOT their typical sound , serious break up song.
Cheers m8!!
No doubt were originally a ska band, apparently lol. An actual ska band from a lot earlier where The Specials, you should definitely react to them. Start with “Ghost Town”
Just today I was talking about that with my friend. Crazy that they started as the ska
Ghost Town and Rudy are good starting points.
Because
"Speak" came out in 1995.
And "Hollaback Girl" came out in 2004
Yal! Have to watch the video.. You can see the chemistry between her and her ex..the bass player....
only one masterpiece out of "Tragic Kingdom" Not only the best No Doubt album imo, but also one of the best albums on the 1990s from one of its best bands. I saw No Doubt live in 2009 in the Verizon Amphiteater and they rocked the entire time. Love Gwen, love love this band
This is the official version, but there is also a demo version. This last has more ska influence.
Sunday Morning is a great underrated song of theirs
Yeah ska is a sub genre of reggae
Yes Gwen Stefani was the lead singer in No Doubt before going Solo, check out Spiderwebs 🔥🔥🔥
If you want an idea of what No Doubt’s ska sounds like, “Different People” is a good introduction. But honestly you can’t go wrong with the whole Tragic Kingdom album.
Saw them in a small club in Nashville before this album made them huge, what a great show.
No doubt we’re huge in the 90’s, spiky and Gwen went solo and the more pop route.
The album Tragic Kingdom is what made them famous. I was obsessed with No Doubt and Gwen when I was growing up in the 90's. I was never a big fan of her pop music, but her ska era was amazing.
💥 Please react to "Hella Good", "Just A Girl", "It's My Life" & "Hey Baby" by No Doubt 💥
Hella Good is so weird, love it!
Love this song so much! My first exposure to No Doubt and Gwen ❤
The rest of the songs of that specific album are more 'Punk Rock' ..
Ska, bro...
@@vanhattfield8292 definitely more punk rock than ska
@@samot4677 Their sound is more Sublime and the Might, Mighty Bosstones (both ska bands) than anything like Fugazi, Black Flag, Fear, The Circle Jerks, The Descendants, The Ramones, The Dead Milkmen, Minor Threat, Bad Religion, etc, etc. They picked up a label as being "Ska Punk" which I can't think of any other band that ever fit into that category, from the media, not from fans when they first came out on MTV trying to put them on the "Cutting Edge", lol. Not throwing shade, just trying to figure out how you would place No Doubt into the punk genre and what other Punk band would you compare them too? Do a google search of "Top Punk bands of the 90;s" and another for "Top Ska bands from the 90's" and see which list you find them on. Cheers!
The video for this is absolutely beautiful….& not just because of Gwen……beautifully crafted
