19 years at wide receiver let's think about this he played for so long he played when Walter Peyton Joe Montana played he played when troy aikman and Emmett Smith played and he played when Tom Brady and and Peyton manning were Young up and comers if you don't respect him for how great of a player he was you have to respect him for his longevity alone
And played when drew brees was young and played all the way up till when Ben Rothelisburger and Eli Manning were rookies. When he started in 85 the cardinals were still in STL and by the time he retired the the texans were 2 years old. The list goes on
It's all footwork, quick cuts, precise route running, timing, hands and great running after the catch...he was simply superb at it, and I have seen no one since who even comes close to Jerry Rice. Jerry didn't have track speed, he had football speed.
yeah 40 times can be misleading. Jerry came out of college running 4.6's... BUT when he catches a ball, you never see him get caught from behind.. He runs like a 4.2 with the ball.. 40 times on a track is not the same as game speed with pads on and a ball in your hand.
GOAT WR. He didn't have Randy Moss' leaping ability, Terrell Owens strength, or Odell Beckham body contortionist catches. He just ran perfect routes, sure handed, and was the hardest working WR for his era.
I was there for two of these plays. @2:50 against the Lions and @4:35 vs the Broncos. My father brought me back to Detroit every Thanksgiving to visit family and we would attend the Lion’s games. I think I was 15 at the time. My home team, the 49ers, just happen to play the Lion’s that year. I had a perfect view of Rice’s catch, I was sitting right next to the end zone, and you could see his knee just almost touch the ground, but he got up and kept on running and no one was even near him. It was beautiful….I was there for the Bronco game as well. They retired Montana’s number that night. Eddie D was there and everything. Rice just returned from being injured at the beginning of the year by Warren Sapp in the opening game vs the Bucs. Rice came back, got a TD and was out again. No one knew how serious it was going to be though. We thought he would be right back. That was also the game Bill Romanowski spit in JJ Stokes face. Niners won though. We went downtown SF to celebrate and my buddy made a u-turn right down Columbus st and a bicyclist smashed right into us; totally my friends fault. My friend begged him not to call the cops and gave him all the money in his wallet. The bicyclist was beyond cool and just took the money. Then we went to the Mitchell Brothers strip club and had fun all night long.
Moss is better alright Better at running his mouth Better at making excuses Better at choking in the playoffs Better at quitting on his teammates and better at LOSING. But better a playing wide receiver?? Not even once. Saying Moss is better than Rice has the same credibility as saying the Earth is flat.
WOW !!!! What a football player. Rice could do it all and would even block when needed. Hands down the greatest ! People who say no never say him play ....flat out
He's clearly overrated. Gloves are nowhere near the gripping power Stickum provides; let alone Stickum and gloves used together. ANY half decent WR with Stickum in his hands can look like an all pro; let alone overrated ass Jerry Rice and his 4.71 40 yard dash time.
Breezy Brees Because of the use of a banned substance known as stickum. ANY wide receiver with this stuff in his hands will look like an all-pro because their gripping power and catching radius will instantly magnify to greater lengths. If your gripping power and catching radius get that much greater, your ability to run routes and your route tree in general gets that much wider because of the fact that all you need to do is place a few fingers on the ball and the stickum will do the rest of the work. You are literally unguardable because as soon as the ball hits your palms, the ball is essentially yours; making any route you run, and any catch you make all that much easier. I'm not a hater and I do think he's a talented receiver, but the use of stickum taints his legacy to me - immensely.
7:47 my dad was at that game because our family are huge seahawks fans but we live in nj. My dad told me about that very catch and i wanted to find it and see it and it was on this video.
Rice is the greatest, hands down. Dude was amazing in ALL areas of the field and for all downs. There is no WR that comes close to the level of difficulty in guarding him down for down.
AllPro777 He wore tack gloves, all they had back then. They provided cushion for your hands. Today's gloves are catching gloves with very sticky adhesive that gets triggered by water. Today's gloves > Tack gloves with stick em
Daniel D How you ask? -Better at route running -Better at reading the zone -Better at gaining yards after the catch -Better at blocking -Better competitiveness -Better longevity When it comes to actual football skill, Moss only did ONE thing better than Rice....catch the deep ball. Rice was better at EVERY other aspect of playing wide receiver. This is why Rice was still kicking ass at age 40 while Moss was washed up by age 33 when he lost half a step. Without his athletic edge he frankly was just another guy. There is a huge difference between being a better athlete (Moss) and being the better football player (Rice) Rice>>>>>>>>>>>>>Moss. By EVERY objective standard possible. -
If I remember right he got injured again in that game. Other than that year he tore his acl he never missed a game. Whats crazier still is he made the pro bowl and had over 1000 yards when he was 40 after an acl tear. Wtf.
He didn't have a stupid endzone dance ,he didn't get a cellphone from under the goalposts, he didn't stand in the middle of the field on the other teams logo , he didn't jump in the stands and eat popcorn, he didn't run his mouth about how great he was ,but there was one thing he did do - he did it with class like no other.
@Nightstalker_55 if he kept playing he wouldn't have gotten close to rice and he would have been a very sad excuse for a wide receiver and the fact that you even compare Moss to Jerry shows just how stupid you actually are
His career from 35 to when he retired would be considered a respectable career for most WR 😂. His yardage record is so untouchable. Even guys like AB or Julio that seem on track can’t maintain it for 20 years.
All you stickum people and Randy Moss fangirls out there, Jerry Rice only used it in 1985 which was his rookie season. If you wanna take away everything he did that season, that's fine. He's still greater than every other receiver to play the game.
The one from 1995 was cool but he caught one against dallas that same year that was only like a 6 yard bloop from Grbac and then outran Deion and like 4 other cowboys. It was amazing.
I know I'm probably going to get proved wrong but in all my years of being a 49ers fan and watching football I've never seen a wide receiver like Jerry Rice, but that's not counting one hand catches they don't count it's how great he was.... Jerry Rice you are a G.O.A.T R F L I E L M A. E T E S T

He was outrunning players when he was 40 years old.
40 yard dash doesn't mean much apparently.
Simply the best receiver to every play.
