I have to replace my head gasket on my 2001 Honda Accord. Everything was fine until I got to removing the timing belt. This video will let me do it without worry. Thanks again.

Thank you Brian. I’m going to have to watch this maybe about three times to work on my 96 Honda Accord vtech. I was hesitant at first but thanks to you I can try and hope to be successful in replacing my timing belt and water pump.
I have to say that this is the most informative video of this job on the internet, I have been preparing to do this on my 2000 Accord and have watched this several times (just look at all my comments) might seem a little overkill but this is a job you need to get right the first time and I seem to pick up something different each time. I do want to say that although he did mention it, it was cut short and I missed it.. But after putting the balancer belt back on, take that long temporary bolt out of the maintenance hole in the back of the engine so the shaft can move freely and replace the permanent bolt. Also I answered my own question on the best prying position to re-tighten the P/S pump. I didn't realize there was a 1/2 in. ratchet notch on the pump to attach a breaker bar for leverage. I credit my newly acquired Honda repair manual for that info. Hey Brian I just wanted to thank you for your video. About a week before my son got his drivers license we pulled his car to the garage to check tire pressures and noticed a heavy coolant leak coming from the lower timing cover. I’m mechanical enough to replace plug and play items but this was an intimidating job due to the timing aspect. We followed your video, spent some time together, and successfully replaced the timing belts and water pump! Thanks again for your help and keep doing what you’re doing! It was a huge help I would have never been able to do that without it!
I like it when you say, "just have fun with it." very ZEN of you. I myself work on my 96 accord all the time so confidence is high as I just developed a heavy leak coming from what looks like my water pump seal and now have no choice or money but to just do it. But the butterflies are raising their brow at me. Nevertheless, thank you for your great help.
Brilliant!! Just completed replacement of the timing belt and water pump on my 1996 Honda Accord. Runs like a top. Thanks for posting this video and making the work so much easier. Cheers!
YES! That's what the 14mm nut that sticks through the timing cover is for. Loosen it, rotate the crank COUNTER CLOCKWISE two turns and then tighten the nut again.
i really enjoy this this replacement is a complicated project and he walks you through it piece by piece and even go into the tiny details that are not necessarily important but good to know especially when you are new to car repairs. most how to's was you take this thing off then this thing and this thing which isn't as helpful as going through it slowly.
Brian, thanks for the awesome video! Just did mine today (well, and yesterday). I think the person who did the timing belt last time didn't put the bolt in to hold the balance shaft. In that case there is no instruction on getting aligned again, but M Wiley Blackburn posted a TH-cam video called "2000 Honda Accord 2.3 LX: balancer belt installation" on how to get it aligned correctly, based on marks that are available - it worked for me and it is actually running much smoother, I am assuming because now the balance shaft is actually balancing the engine correctly.
YOU are not poor unless you decide you are. You might not have money right now. That's different. Remember you are inventive, creative, and determined. Those are all things inside of you that constitute YOU. "Poor" is an illusion of things that are external and don't describe YOU.
Thank you for this video. it made doing this job plus replacing the camshaft seal manageable. the only thing I would have wanted more information on would be tensioning the inner timing belt. the oil leak my boss has had for 5 years is now gone with your help.
The Gates kit isn't that high quality based on the Amazon reviews that say the Chinese water pump goes bad. Get the Aisin kit (about $190) which uses OEM components. The original pump on the Honda is an Aisin.
Awesome video man. I just did a water pump, timing belt and thermostat job on my gf's 93' Toyota Camry. She has a big loss of power so I think my timing jumped. This video helped me understand timing alot better so thanks man. Keep it up. This was super helpful even though it's a honda.
i think your videos are very good and thorough for a novice/beginner, a bit slow for me since i am looking more for the special tricks, tools, and watchouts but great stuff.
Nice video, very relaxed explanation and no jittering around :p Why doesnt anyone suggest having a friend pressing on the brake and putting in 5th gear to stop the engine from rotating when you remove the bolt? I did a head gasket, new head bolts, new valves, new belt and lapping to a 1,4 Clio MK2 and we got the cam bolt off pretty easily when my dad pressed the brake and the trans was on 5th gear :) After 6000km still running perfect
He makes more money, videos, and subscribers than I do. That's his goal and he nails it with less effort than I put in. That's got to count for something.
briansmobile1, Have watched a few of your videos and find them very informative and thorough. Anyone think your not a top notch technician is just dealing with some kind of envy jealousy. Been repairing vehicles for approx. 20 yrs. or so and you have saved me time and money on the repairs I had not encountered on the few not familiar with. Great job and maybe you should consider being an instructor as age creeps up on you. Thanks and keep up the great work. L.S.
Keep in mind, without the big air gun briansmobile1 has, you need either a chain wrench or the crankshaft pulley tool to hold the crank pulley still. Usually these pulley bolts are on really tight and when you undo them it sounds like you broke something. I've done many timing belts in Hondas, Acuras and Toyotas and it is pretty similar. with regards to 4 cylinders.
Thank you so much for the detailed video & tips, Brian & team! A few things I noticed in my first timing belt on '96 vtec Accord: 1) getting crank bolt loose was a nightmare! Almost assembled an oxy-acet torch but a buddy happened to have a 4x torque multiplier which worked like a charm! (keeping my eye out on Ebay for one now! 2) getting lower timing cover off was not even close to how easy as it looks in your video; got it out with a few scrapes, putting it it back was another nightmare!

i really have to thank you for putting this video up. it was very helpful when having to take out my own water pump. my car isn't a vtec though so a few things were different but still. thanks for this video and the explanations.
Thank you for an excellent "how to" video. I'm so impressed, with your guidance and encouragement I really believe I can tackle this job relatively easy. I've done a similar job on a Nissan Quest. After watching this most enjoyable tuber, I have decided to begin first thing in the morning. Because of you I went and purchased my first set of pneumatic tools. I'm now a big fan of Briansmobile1 and Spanky who by the way did a most excellent job as well.
Thank you for your very detailed explanation of this project, very nice camera work as well , I'm going to attempt this same project tonight, I'll definitely look for more video's from you in the future. Joe in Chicago
Oil-pump keeper bolt? I'm doing one of these in the morning.Did I miss that part also? Other than that, wow, hell of a good job with you and the camera person. I watched another guy on TH-cam trying the same job, and oh boy...not good. Anyway, I'm a Pro and you saved me some time on this video for sure. I always under-bid these jobs, and so watching you sure helps. Great work. I thank you sir. Douglas D. Central California.............
Thank you! Very good video, instructions and tips. I replaced Belts, w. pump and adj. pulleys on my 2002 accord. are little squiggly, I am concerned timing belts maybe too tight.
I like when you said "so take your time and enjoy it" isn't that the truth! I mean why get in a hurry and screw it up? LOL, sometimes you have to stop and drink some coffee while inspecting it, then think about it, then talk about it, then occasionally stop and... smell the roses. You mentioned Scotty Kilmer, you watch him too? I'm a subscriber of Scotty, I like his video's, sure he doesn't give complete details, and any half ass mechanic should know a few things anyways before they get greasy, but if you have a question at least he responds and interacts with other youtuber's, where a lot of youtuber's will not.
Awesome video! Questions: 1. The outer timing belt tensioner - is that self adjusting or manually set? If so, how much? 2. I might be doing a 05 Odyssey and 04 Pilot timing belt. Obviously V6 motors but is the procedure basically the same, with 2 heads and more fun w/ the rear head?) 3. Why does the valve cover go over the belt cover?? I can't think of any reason to take the valve cover off, unless that's Honda's way of strongly recommending a valve adjustment at the same time? Thanks!!
thanks bro i have a 97 honda accord lx no vetech and this vid just worked me right through got the job done in about 3 or less hours with water brake and food lol but it hepled me save so much money. :-)
Thx for the video man. I like how you explain stuff especially cuz I'm about to replace a water pump on my girls Honda. So this Video was really helpful.
Being specific helps. The hardware store I go to carries each metric bolt diameter at two different pitches. Some people may not know the trend with ISO 261 is to use coarse pitches. I didn't know this trend too until now. ;)
There was some slack in the timing belt between the cam and crank drive gear. You'll find your belt is off by one tooth. The fix is to tear it back down and re set the timing belt. The noise is the belt vibrating from being loose.
Thanks for all your help this video made replacing my timing belt and water pump very easy, the only 2 problems I encounter was trying to get the crank bolt off, I tried everything it just didn't work until I used a torch and heated the bolt for a few mins then with a long breaker bar it came off. The other one is starting my car back up it's misfiring (P1399) any ideas why I was thinking ignition coil? Again Thank you every much
Get it back to stock. Wrecking yards and the dealership will have the OEM parts you need. Re Engineering is a lot harder and involves more trial and error than you may want to mess with- otherwise you wouldn't be asking me.
Hi Brian, first wanted to thank you for taking the time to make this great video Ill like to thank Spanky as well. Your video is/was very helpful! Beautifully done. Please say the size of the fastener in every instance if you can. That is a big help to us 1st timers!
Here I am after 8 years watching your video again. Thanks.
My neighbors really appreciate it. I try to be available for them when they need me.
Thanks- I've been wanting to do this vid for a long time, but didn't have the help or software and time needed.
Thank you so much for showing us this VDO...I'm saving a lot of money doing this my self also
i really have to thank you for putting this video up. it was very helpful when having to take out my own water pump. my car isn't a vtec though so a few things were different but still. thanks for this video and the explanations.
It took you less than an hour. Are you a wizard? Really appreciate the walk through.
RON PAUL! You're officially my favorite mechanic.
Hy mate you video has help me a lot I just got my honda odyssey timing belt done today everything wnt well
Thank you so much for putting those video .
This was the best vid you put out yet Brian!!!! Good Job Man!!!!! Loved It...
Marc
Great video Brian. Thanks for taking the time for all of these videos
hey eric great video man. i appreciate the time that you and spanky took to make a great video. thanks again brother. :)
Thank you for your very detailed explanation of this project, very nice camera work as well , I'm going to attempt this same project tonight, I'll definitely look for more video's from you in the future.

You've got it. Tension on the left slack on the right. And on the cam balance belt slack on the top tension on the bottom.
Two of the best techs out there by far!!
I already met Eric maybe one day I can meet brian
This video is very informative. Right down to the size of the head bolt and the tool necessary to get the job done.
All I keep saying is he's good!! He loves to teach.. 🤗🤗 thank you
RON PAUL!!!!!! Educational and Inspirational!!!!
Questions:
1. The outer timing belt tensioner - is that self adjusting or manually set? If so, how much?
2. I might be doing a 05 Odyssey and 04 Pilot timing belt. Obviously V6 motors but is the procedure basically the same, with 2 heads and more fun w/ the rear head?)
3. Why does the valve cover go over the belt cover?? I can't think of any reason to take the valve cover off, unless that's Honda's way of strongly recommending a valve adjustment at the same time?
Thanks!!
Nicely done. Thank you, ever so much, for the confidence to do the job. Been a long time since I done my '92.
Excellent video. Very thorough and detailed. Thanks for making it
thanks bro i have a 97 honda accord lx no vetech and this vid just worked me right through got the job done in about 3 or less hours with water brake and food lol but it hepled me save so much money. :-)
You took the fear out of this job! Thanks for walking me through it!
Wow. I can't believe you taped this job. That's awesome. Thanks Brian. It's stuff like this why I follow your channel :)
Thx for the video man. I like how you explain stuff especially cuz I'm about to replace a water pump on my girls Honda. So this Video was really helpful.
Love the detail here. I hope you can put out more quality videos like this brian!
2 of my favourite youtubers in one vid, good idea!
EXCELLENT video. I've got a 2001, and this video is perfect.
Being specific helps. The hardware store I go to carries each metric bolt diameter at two different pitches. Some people may not know the trend with ISO 261 is to use coarse pitches. I didn't know this trend too until now. ;)
im gonna do a tb and wp on my 2001 civic 1.7n and its the exact same procedure. thanks for the vid i learned alot from it
There was some slack in the timing belt between the cam and crank drive gear.
Hi Brian,
first wanted to thank you for taking the time to make this great video Ill like to thank Spanky as well. Second Im wandering if you could tell me how much would be the labor on all this, I have the same car i usually work on it myself, but for this job i dont have the tools. Please get back to me when you get a chance. Thanks
You can tell when a person is a professional making a video on cars or when somebody is just a hobby
You're welcome- great to hear from you Doug!
