- Every Fisherman will have his own favourite or even "secret" bait, but very often it is the most basic bait that catches the fish. In this episode Graeme heads down to Angler's Paradise in Devon to run through some of the tactics he uses for hooking one of his most successful hookbaits...Plain Bread...It might sound boringly simple but its a great starter bait for beginners or older anglers coming back in to the sport...plus its about as budget conscious as you can get. Tips include his famous "Pyramid crust",for freelining at greater distances. Check it out, and if you want a bit of rod bending action it might just be the bait for you.

Aged 72 and a new angler I need all the help I can get so this is an excellent video Graeme. Even struggle using a controller float so I will try these methods as an alternative.
Have to agree, watched nearly 7 minutes and already learnt more about using bread as bait that my friends taught me. I guess that's why the channel name is never questioned - Graeme really is the man.
Welcome to the hobby, may you be blessed with "tight lines"
i wish you pleasant weather and tight lines for many seasons to come sir
@-AT-WALKER Thanks ATW. Just wished that I hadn't wasted all those years not fishing.
Mate, you'll learn no, problem, there's an old man called Kevin who fishes our club lake, he drives himself to our lake in Halland from Eastbourne, roughly 16 miles each way and he's 87, so you sir are a mere pup ln comparison, you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but a pup like you can learn new tricks! A few months down the line { see what I did then? } you'll wonder what all the worrying was about, I'm 75 now and if I'm as sorted as Kev is at 87 I'll be as happy as a dog with two dicks!🤭Stay lucky mate, and tight lines!
@snerper Thanks for such a smashing reply 👏. Funny old world as I live in Eastbourne so I will look out for him.
Hey Graham im so glad you are putting up this video i was worried about you as i didn't see anything last Friday night ,your videos are my weekly fix keep up with the wonderful content kind regards Darren
You certainly had a few this session Graeme, I totally agree there is nothing better than seeing the float go under!
It's just the best feeling mate, I'm 75 and still get a great buzz from seeing the float dip under!👍👍
as always a great video Graeme, i love the "pyramid" bread system i've never seen that before, to be totally honest i've not been for over ten years since i lost my dad (and best mate) but you've made me want to start again, he took me from about 6 years old and i'll be 53 next, so thanks for doing these video's Graeme you're a top bloke 👍👍👍
Just been down my local lake and used bread as groundbait and caught a load of Rudd thanks Graham for teaching me the skills I need when I first started I was 19 now at 22 I know a lot more thanks to you and I get to save loads of money two nice one mate
Great to see you back out I was only saying the other day I’ve not seen any videos from you in a while hope you’re doing well. Your the person that got me in to TH-cam and back in to fishing so thanks 🙏
Chris
I only missed one Friday ,but back in the production frame now...I just ran out of time last wek.
Another great video! Exactly the same bread I use haha! Been watching your channel for years and I still remember getting 2 signed photographs from You and Mike for my 17th Birthday! I'm now 23!! I've now got a channel myself to start making fishing films. Thank you ❤
When baiting with floating crust break off a tiny piece of a blade of grass and place it between the bend of the hook and and the crust , this will stop the hook pulling through too easy when wet. Also if you are gentle you can dip the bait in the water and cast out further free lined , works a treat.
Great video Graham, we are having massive problems with algi on alot of are rivers, loughs and canals in northern Ireland. The biggest issue is lough Neagh it's 1 of the biggest bodys of fresh water in Europe and it's literally dieing, all commercial fishing is banned at the moment. Local anglers, swimmers, dog walkers have started a petition for parliament but it's apparently a divorced issue and has to be fixed here but are local authorities are passing the buck. Very sad time, but still some excellent fishing in Ireland were not done yet. Love the channel hope you and your whole family are keeping well 🎣🐟
I remember Lough Neagh when I used to go through Ireland, its a huge body of water. Sad to hear its having problems.
Nice video Graeme, it also reminded me that I had to stop taking my dog to one of our club lakes because the ducks kept attacking him! It's my own fault though, I shouldn't have bought a 'pure bread dog'🤔👍👍👍👍👍thumbs up for the bread tips, older hands tend to forget how good it can be, and younger and less experienced anglers will certainly benefit from this vid! I've done well for carp this season with freelining bread, float fishing bread and margin fishing!
I always use scissors when using bread (my overall favourite bait of all time). Use scissors to cut pieces of bait with a lot less waste and avoids squashing the bread flat with clumsy fingers.
Funny, we went fishing lately and the carp was loving red Leicester cheese from Aldi. One of us had red Leicester from co op but that didn't work as well as Aldi. lol Never would of thought about using that as a bait!
Many people do not understand the need for dredging. It seems so destructive, but we till up the soil and it washes into the waterways and clogs them up with silt, so it's our own fault in the first place. Dredging out ditches, small streams and rivers to control flooding and increase the carrying capacity of the watershed used to be done quite often.
I agree about the rivers. Im 39 now and used to fish the river Lea from about age 6 up until the current day. Im 6'2" and have been over 6 foot since i was 16. Anyway, this is relevant because there was a section of the Lea me and a mate fished when we were about 16 that was really good, but hard to cast into the right spots with trees and a barb wire fence spanning the width of the river. We used to go down there with chest waders and collect other peoples floats, rigs, hooks and even flies they'd lost on the barb wire fence. We used to have to be really careful as the water level was only an inch or 2 from going into the chest waders. Nowadays i can walk across the river wearing shorts and not get them wet. It used to be full of barbel up to 9lb, chub up to 5lb and carp just going into double figure. Now theres just roach, small chub and gudgeon.
Thanks for the comment I am sure there are a lot of older fishermen out there who have had similar experiences.
Nice one G Man. Fergal Sharky doing a lot of good work trying to get out streams and rivers cleaned up. Also, I know you’re not a tackle tart but but you seen this “magic twig” contraption that’s causing a lot of controversy? Spring loaded to no missed hook sets. I think it’s a bad idea
Not seen it but with a regular bolt rig I don't think I miss any fish either...Why should I change ?. The old saying is don't mend it if it ain't broke !!...I'll stick with how I do it the regular way. I'm too old to change now.
Some great tips there Graham. Great video.
Thank you for the upload Graeme 👍
Amazing advice mate thanks for sharing
I always used to use bread at one time brilliant bait for roach rudd carp etc i even caught perch eels and once i had a little pike took bread flake
Grated Breadcrumbs mixed with grated cheese 100% winning bait
Good stuff Graeme. Thanks for the upload. Evening all. Spam for barbel this weekend for me! P.S good to see the old yellow cap get an outing! I've got a disgusting old one I still use!
Just a thought as you often say you are aiming at new anglers you ,could start by saying before you start fishing the 1st thing to set up is a landing net a lot of new anglers listen to you. I often see youngsters fishing our local stretch of river without one.
Hello Graeme, whats with this weather mate up and down, sun, wind, rain, anyway mate great to see you, very enjoyable as always,
have a good weekend, im going to fish the river mole on Monday, see if I can blank......oh hold on no I mean catch something lol.
Don't worry I went out last night for a couple hours into dark on my local river. Anything..Chub,Barbel etc. Chocked with wed..not a bite. So I will try another swim on a different section. I don't know any swims and nobody is about to tell me so it might take me a few trips to sort out the best spots. I have had more blanks(lots of half day sessions) this year than I can remember. I blame global warming.
@@TAFishing yea I know it going to be a tough one, we have rain at the moment which might help, but I do it anyway, cheers mate, all the best.
Lovely video
Hampshire Avo has good Roach in it now.
Thanks to The Roach project
I could watch Graeme fishing on the middle lane of a motorway ( obviously closed don't want the fish spooked) and still be entertained... Have not heard 'Smith' in a while.... you sacked him?
Rumor has it Graeme sent him for a long weight at the tackle shop, hasn't returned yet...
Many thanks for sharing as always mate :)
Good tips Graeme and very well filmed as always. That was a nasty spider bite on your lip.
Awesome video as always Graeme
Went fishing yesterday some rain was on the cards, none until I rode home lol sods law, but I had my umbrella type bivy to block the wind, worked a treat otherwise I'd have quit after 2 hours, caught a huge bream 4lb+ and sods law sd corrupted grrr. Was a nice day even with shower on way home.
Keep the files! Over the years software advancements have saved some of my old footage / files with zero effort required on my end other than opening them... or use it as an excuse **coughs** reason, to get back out there 😉
My little lad love beginner carp lake.. video is a little old pagoda been build for months now
Just been watching some of your old carp videos again. Absolutely brilliant, catching carp on cat food, and a roast dinner!! 😂
Nice to see you doing good
Great video Graham
Definitely tricky to hook of the top in some of the commercials. I usually look at the belly in the line and wait for that to zip through the water letting them almost hook themselves
Another great video!
You are a treasure Graham.
Hi graham great videos ive been watching your videos on shark rigs ect im in padstow cornwall and gunna give it a blast couple questions in big tides do you have a weight to keep the bait down ? And what sort of depth of water shall i target i was thinking 40 metres ? Thanks bud 👍
Not if you are drifting as you are going with the tide, but any wind against or across the tide might push the tide flow faster than the boat and the baits swing up .Then you might need a 4 ounce lead just up from the bait to pin it down a bit. Main thing is having plenty of chum (rubby dubby in old school) .Don't be afraid to fish one bait straight under the boat as well as the usual float supported baits. Stagger the depths to cover the water column. And if you feel inclined bump a smaller bait just off the bottom to pick up other species in between. Or work a sandeel or Sidewinder lure up and down while you drift for any Bass or Pollock. Good luck with it. And watch that bar at the mouth of the estuary on a spring. Its a right dodgy area in certain winds. Check with the coastguard first I reckon.
@TAFishing thanks graham yes very aware of the doom bar ive fished the camel and in and out of padstow for many years very unpredictable .... thank you for the reply i fish for alot of species and been quite successful but now is the time to move onto the sharks 🦈 i have never tried so any info i appreciate it ive ordered all the wire, crimps, hooks to make traces ive studied your videos 😅😅 its now the case of what depth of water to fish in does that make a difference ??? Oh and the chum is sorted i followed your video its all frozen down ready to go 😄😄
Anybody used a loaf of Scottish plain bread for fishing? Never done coarse fishing up this way, always fly / lures or fishing the coast. Done a fair amount of coarse fishing with friends and family south of the border but bait was always provided.
In my mind, plain bread would be easier to bait up and last longer in the water. Opinions or experience based knowledge welcome, genuinely curious👍
EDIT: I think the "tin loaf" Graeme mentions is fairly similar to the bread I mentioned... yes I comment before watching the full video mb
Aye, pan bread is denser and stays on the hook for longer, plain bread has a bit too much air in it, and falls of the hook earlier though it can float a wee bit longer. The crust on plain can be too hard to get a hook through and can break up. Plain breaks up better as ground bait. Plain bread makes better toast!
A really good watch ho yeah you know where the fishing is at on TH-cam
That Rudd almost went to space! 😂
Hi graham have u done any wild trout vids b4
In the playlist somewhere. I think one was spinning for wild Browns.
@@TAFishing cheers
So look forward to fri evenings
Its brilliant to have you back Graham ive missed your videos and the fun you have with them. Another great video for everyone. Thanks, its great to have you back. 🎣🎣
I only missed 1 Friday upload !!...Seems like a lot of people are addicted to them. I might try a double upload next week to make up for missing one. See what time I get.
@@TAFishing will lookforward to them Graham. 😉
Nice one Big G 👍👍👍
Have you tried bagels? They are chewy, stay on a hook well and catch classier fish.
No,I don't think I have tried those ,but they do have a different texture.
Thank you for sharing ✌️💞🤟
The colour of that water,is it the amount of fish stirring it up?
I would have to say yes. Probably clay based lake, not too deep and well stocked. That's what I find myself anyway.
Oops, missed this one. 😆👍
Oh Graham this was agony to watch as all surface fishing banned where I fish
It’s got to be the ultimate fun
No wonder they call it Angler's Paradise. QED!😊
Good game good game
Outside ends are called various things depending on where you live. Doorstops, outsiders, heels, butt, end piece, endies, thickie............
I reckon you could catch fish with a set of drain rods but I don't want to give you any ideas! 😂
What lake anglers paradise?
One of those on the main holiday complex part I recall.
Is it because the 'water board' doesn't clean the rivers or streams anymore, the land owners have to do/pay for it themselves...
I think a variety of factors, all contributing. Maintenance and abstraction are two of the main causes in my opinion.
👍👍👍
Hi Graham, those tin loafs are also great for eating, but you need a fresh loaf for that
Haha, ‘Sell the wife to pay for petrol’. I love it
Trout need gravel to breed!!
I do enjoy your videos but I honestly think beginners should stick to maggots, they are cheap and they catch everything wherever you go. You can learn the simple things first and catch fish with maggots. Anglers Paradise is stuffed full of fish, and that does make bread fishing look very easy. Just my opinion and look forward to watching more of your videos. ATB MMMD
When using bread ,,make sure there's no ducks 🦆 on lake or it will end in tears
why dont you try throwing the bread on the surface and when the carp start taking of the surface.. and use fly rod and catch the carp ontop the surface with a fly...
A lot of fisheries don't allow fly fishing, although we have several films up on the playlist covering fly fishing for Carp.
river fishing is where its at..... ponds lakes.. a bind man can fish on in small pond stocked with loads of fish... you have to be a stupid fisherman NOT to strike . River fishing is for the breed of fisherman who know how to control float and bottom feeder .. River fishing is hard but can be done ... you put the hours in and you bring home the fish.. Ponds this size a child could catch with net ... really, you'd have to be stupid not to catch... The fish are handing it to your like a London hooker , right there in your face? great Graeme, thank you once again for tips
I was introduced to nature in the 50's. I weep for my grandchildren who don't even know what has been stolen from them. Modern, profit first, agriculture is the biggest thief of all.
Time we jailed a few water authority CEO's eh Graham ? Or better still, politicians who allow water authorities to pollute with impunity ! ✌❤ Bob.
Oh god not more Easy Course Fishing ffs just take a bread roll
Bad attitude
More to come.I have loads of coarse films stocked up.Then its easy Sea fishing, easy beach fishing and I hope an easy trout fishing film. Not sure of doing "easy trout on a bread roll though"..might be a prison sentence !!
It's such a shame how time changes rivers. When I was a youngster I used to fish the Windrush in the 80s and early 90s and it was magical! Shoals of Barbel where prolific, Plenty of chub and specimen siced Dace to be caught. Went back there a couple of years back and the river was dead. Apparently otters were re introduced in the early 2000s and decimated the fish stocks. This and crayfish and all the houses popping up in what were meadows and fields have sadly turned the river flowing through Witney in to a largely fish less body of water.
You have it in a nutshell.I can never see those fish stocks returning.
No challenge what so ever in places like that
Bad attitude,he was doing it for beginners!
First 😂
