From my perspective, thd Dolph Ziggler character was created to replace The Brian Kendrick in the Upper midcard/Main event scene as he debuted around the time Kendrick was getting buried.
It’s weird looking back at the Championship Scramble match type it was really weird and the match should never comeback because it’s a terrible type of match which was sorta misleading
I heard it was Johnny Ace idea. Since he was the only person behind Kendrick to be the man in 2008. Even though WWE was focused more in Hardy. Then when it came time to book the scramble, Johnny Ace pushed for Kendrick to be the champion, so they just had him gain a pinfall just to see if he or Hardy got a bigger pop, as they still were unsure of Hardy
Huge missed opportunity on a star. Never thought he'd ever get a serious run with the title itself, but I always thought he could've been a solid challenger for the belt if they used him right.
I actually liked him when I was younger. He had that smart intellectual attitude swagger that was heelish but came off cool to me. Not mention his theme music was great too

I think what killed his momentum was being drafted to raw in 2009. Smackdown seems to let people have a shot and give them time. Raw ruined people and didn't get what got them over
Yeah, because Jeff Hardy was there. if you ever encountered Jeff Hardy, or even Matt at times in like 2008-9, if your name isn’t Triple H, John Cena or Shawn Michaels you’re getting buried. SmackDown was only such a promising land for young talent because the lack of the Hardy Boyz.

Looking back, I really wish I had never seen him before he debuted that gimmick. Sure I liked London & Kendrick as a team (mostly London tbh), but he always looked like a kid among adults. Then in 2008 he comes back with this cool look and gimmick, and still all I could see back in those days was the kid that used to call himself Spanky. Had I started watching WWE in 08, I would've definitely been a fan of The Brian Kendrick here though. That being said, let's also pretend his 205 run never happened. That was as bad as the 205 brand was in general, in my eyes. As for what the character resembled, I can see where the Pillman comparison or the DiCaprio inspiration are coming from, but personally I always saw it as a combination of a Kurt Cobain grunge kinda look with an Alex DeLarge attitude.

You know even tho technically he was the WWE champion, he also was technically not the WWE champion its so weird. I guess you can say technically they are the WWE champion for the time they score the pinfall but if they don't win the match and get the last fall then its scratched from the record books.
