- Robert Costa is the chief election and campaign correspondent for CBS News. He previously reported on politics for The Washington Post and is the co-author, with Bob Woodward, of Peril.
The following interview was conducted by the Kirk Documentary Group’s Mike Wiser for FRONTLINE on March 5, 2024, prior to Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race. It has been edited for clarity and length.

I've followed Costa for a long time. He's always been clear-eyed. "I was outside the Willard Hotel on the night of January 5th," Robert Costa says of where a "war room" was set-up by Rudy Giuliani and others. The Proud Boys and Oath Keepers circling the hotel, almost like it was a military installation getting ready for the day of the 6th."
His mishandling of classified documents is disturbing. How irresponsible. Costa summarizes the danger of Trump coming back into power. We can't let it happen.
Attention is oxygen to the Don.

I've long liked Bob Costa because he's an actual journalist whose journey from print to television was not an easy one. But this interview is strange. It's as if he has a catalog of speeches on Trump ready and queued up in response to any question. And he delivers them as if they're speeches. This throws off the interviewer. Hence the long pauses after Costa's answers. Are the answers good? Yes. And I can't put my finger on what, exactly, about this that feels...off. Nothing spontaneous. And that may be due to the interviewer.

What interviews are you referencing? This is like a mini-doc PBS production, not an ordinary media interview.
I too am a huge Robert Costa fan. His answers are dialed in, but I think it's because he's been reporting on Trump and answering these questions for nearly 15 (!!!) years. If he were an opinion writer, he could riff a little more. Bob is the best at reminding me that Trump is a provocateur interested in power and not all that complicated. Also, I wonder how many times over the last 15 years Bob wished he had instead become a reporter for Rolling Stone 😂

Interesting. One wonders whether this is due to budget constraints or to new policies.
The interrogator's audio is not as it should be. Sounds like he's speaking toward the camera's mic, or Costa's. They might be in a closet; that's what the interrogator's audio says.
It might be your sound system. I could hear both of them clearly but I do have a range of settings on my system.
The point is they want you to see the interviews in their entirety so that because unlike in a documentary you’re getting clips of that interview and you can say that it’s been edited to steer the entire tenor of the documentary in one way but here you get to see the individual interviews
