So many people think the S63 doesn't have rod bearing issues smh. As an E60 M5 owner, who also does all the work on his BMW himself, I feel your pain

Jose, very sorry to hear about your significant rod bearing failure. However, glad to see you’ve decided to personally tackle the rebuild and take the time to share. Sounds like you already have a good plan in place for the crank, rod bearings and main bearings.
Regarding using the stock rods and pistons, something to consider is using the F90 rods and pistons. I’ve heard they’ve been improved.
You also should consider having the cylinder walls cleaned up using the techniques that are appropriate for Alusil blocks. This will help make sure your new piston rings will break in and seal properly.

Thank you for the comment Jeff. I did hear about the improved F90 pistons and I did consider it. I have actually sealed the engine already and i'm looking to release the rest of the videos soon. The cylinder wall and the block was resurfaced cleaned and inspected by a machine shop and I'll have a video about it soon.

I can't believe that I am early a year late to this. It is very hard to find good S63TU content like this. Sorry to hear of the trouble but you are a boss for taking this on.

Man as a f90 owner I am fearful. I can only imagine the moment you found out. I wish I was mechanically inclined enough to do this much work myself in the unfortunate event this happens, but I don’t even have the tools to do it even if I wanted to try. Consider yourself blessed for having the means, knowledge and willingness to tackle such a job. Truly inspiring.

If you can swing it, go forged man. I loved my 2013 F10 M5, however, I started to have a lot of issues with mine around 27K miles. AC went out twice, coils kept going bad, the battery died twice in a year, many unexplainable non-major electrical gremlins, and finally my clutches went bad. This was a BMW CPO and I estimate 13-15K of warranty repairs went into the vehicle over my 2 1/2 years of ownership. I wanted to forge my motor, but I got tired of having warranty repairs done on my car. When my M5 wasn’t in the shop it was excellent to drive.

Dang! Spun rod bearing. E60 M5 owner here: 2 actually. It also greatly depends on how the previous owner cared for it. Both of Mine sit at 45k miles. One purchased it from the original owner(77 year old man) who religiously took it to bmw for oil services, etc, etc: 2nd a collector. Service Paper trail history for both.
The S63 engine is way more complex than the S85 and way more expensive. S54, S65, S85, S63, ( I’m sure I’m missing more) need rod bearing service. I’m sorry to hear what happened to you. Sucks 😢

I think its better to do the rod bearings before 90k miles. I did some research, checked out accidental auction. I noticed that every bmw f10 m5 with such issues have 100k miles and above. I think its best to take care of it as early as possible. I bought a 2013 m5 two months ago with 75k miles, i was trying to make sure am ahead with maintenance. That was the reason for my research.

Did you analyze why the engine failed on one piston in particular? Bent rod? This is a common issue on tuned F90s. I heard f10 engines suffer from rod bearing failures but always figured it was too long oil intervals or owners not topping up. What was your oil change interval and did it require top ups between changes? It definitely doesn't look like an oil pump failure since the other rods were not wiped out as well. I apologize for asking so many questions but it is always wisest to learn from other people's mistakes :)

I recently found metal shavings in my n55 engine. I took it to a shop and they found scoring on cylinder 1-5. They are gonna need to be re-sleeved so I might as well do forged internals and a big turbo while im there. I haven't looked inside but im guessing the cause of the shavings is rod bearings. typical pwg n55

Hey brother that’s for you video. So I have a BMW 2014 M5 with 63,000 miles. The car is bone stock do you think I should change my rod bearings? I don’t drive the car that hard but you know sometimes I push it. BTW I don’t think you stupid for self diagnosing you car because obviously it’s cheaper to figure it out yourself and the F10 M5 is a beautiful car that we should keep on the streets. Thanks again for the content I appreciate it.

Listen . My M5 passed away the day I used arco gas for the first time . Got on to the freeway and had to get right off . Fuel injectors MALFUNCTION made the engine get to hot to where The engine seized as I was accelerating. Now Heres where you fucked up. Sometimes in life, there's going to be a time where you have to use those 2 round things hanging between your legs called BALLS . Using those and taking a chance can actually get you to a better spot. I waited 6 months for it to finally rain in California . I used that as a excuse on my insurance claim that my M5 had traveled through a flooded intersection on the highway. I got it towed to a shop where he was able to pull the plugs and add water inside for the adjuster. Insurance came through and paid my car off and handed me a check for 10k . Now I'm driving a M6. I bet your buddies knew that but they seen the soft in you to even give it a try . NO is the worst thing they can tell you . If there's a will, there's a way and sometimes you have to play a roll to not end up back at ground zero making a video saying your dream car is gone and don't think I'll get another one . Don't act like a mustang driver if your in a M performance hustler. ✌️
