Zulawski was way ahead of time. If "On the Silver Globe" was more known when it was made in the 80's, it would've been deemed as groundbreaking film for its camera work and editing.
I saw this film in France in the 80's. I never forgot. The atmosphere, the acting, the story. No creepy CGI special effects back then, just genious film directors and proper actors.

It was horror movies like this that modern horror movies will never get close to. When I first saw this as a kid it freaked me out. I bought an uncut copy at a convention on VHS. I can understand why it was illegal at the time in the U.S. and West Germany.

I saw this at alamo drafthouse a few years ago in the month of October. By the time the movie was over i just sat in my seat, the lights all came on and everyone had left. I walked to my car slowly, kind of lumbering along in no particular rush. I got into my car and sat again with the key in the ignition, and just stared. Ive seen movies that have tugged at my emotions, movies that have left me surprised at the lighting outside compared to the movie ive just seen, and movies that make me feel like a child again. But this. This movie...this just fucked me up lol
I love SHUDDER got those old & goodies my child hood & teens 70s & 80s era horror movies. that's i got Shudder for few years NOW & changed it to AMC+ last year!

Sam Neill a brilliant actor he is actually a New Zealander although he has also lived in Australia too. A very underrated actor; a very smart but humble actor and a nice guy in real life. 🎉🎉🎉
she’s like a 26 yr old teenage girl having a psychotic break.i’m the same age so found the character v relatable. girlhood VS womanhood portrayed horrific & emotionally realistic. she has everything a woman wants, but nothing a girl wants & it horrifies her. that’s my takeaway.

Why is it sad to you that it’s called a horror? Why wouldn’t it be classified as a horror? Whether it’s the murders, fridge scene, monster or the most obvious thing that makes this a horror: the disintegration of a married couple and their descent into madness. Watching their breakdown and the absolute neglect and trauma their son faces IS horrific.
It's a horror film nonetheless. I would agree that the discussion on this film is usually in the realm of the horror aspects, which is by far the less interesting component of this film.
I can't understand why more people don't comment on Sam Neill's performance in this. Its so, so bad that it nearly ruins the entire experience. It's a testament to the film that it still manages to be incredible. Thank god for Adjani...
@@cheesecake1017 Within the context of the director's films it's befitting, I'll give you that, because most of his actors act the same way. Detached from that though it's pretty laughable at times.. Of the three or four people I've shown the film to, each one of them, without fail, has chuckled/commented on his over-acting. Some of his scenes are unintentionally amusing though ("The lies!") so I've learnt to not let it spoil the experience. for me given that the whole film is bat-shit crazy. It's taken some time though. So, I stand by my comment I'm afraid. Within context he's ok. Out of context, he's hammier than a pork store...and it's distracting.

I've watched Possession again since making that initial post and I'm definitely more appreciative of what Sam did. The tone is quite strange and seems to vacillate between a surrealist nightmare and a linear drama dealing with betrayal and dysfunctional codependence. Sam Neill's acting chops were not quite up to par yet either. There was just so much in this movie that didn't make sense. I suspect if I had stumbled across this knowing nothing about it I would have been pleasantly surprised but with all the hype I was disappointed. Honestly, I think a lot of people say this is a classic horror but really have no idea what the hell is going on either. The Heinrich character was quite funny though, I will grant that 😂.
The whole point of the film is that you don't know what is going on... it is weird and surreal, and the beauty of it is that it would never be made these days. A classic indeed

@@sophieminter0 well its title "POSSESSION" is used in a kind of semantic way with a double meaning, you can see it as a supernatural possession because of how she behaves and the subway scene, but she is also being treated as a possession of two men, the subway scene is a visualisation of her letting out the toxicity of her situation, and the scene with the monster, it isn't actually a monster it's just Sam neill sees the other man as a monster that has consumed her and made her the way she is, also the movie is set in Berlin and at that time with the Berlin Wall Germany is also being treated as a possession of two opposing forces
I first saw Possession during a 24 hr movie marathon at the 3am slot. It’s honestly an experience I’ll never ever forget. A certified classic.
