  • Karan Johar has worked with our country's biggest stars, yet in this episode of Beneath the Surface, he tells us that he doesn't share a relationship of equals with them. "It’s very difficult to be friends with a movie star. When you walk into a crowd, 300 people will jump on them, not you. How does that make you equal to them," he says.

      Jesse Pinkman Anupama s caught hold of him in a zone(phyical and also his inner,so influenced) where he's in flow with his candid,unabashed and heartfelt realism. And she also does have a knack of stringing together a fine set of questions,well-articulated and naturally put forth.

    Karan speaks so well. In every interview I'm in awe bc he'll say some amazing things that just sound so poetic, its probably bc hes a writer but damn. Like "you can't find a piece of mind on a counter, or a loving relationship on the racks" that was pretty amazing.

    Hearing him talk about lost of innocence and the person he was in the 90’s and early 2000’s is so personal and touching maybe that’s why I keep watching these movies wanting to remember those times and the happiness, the friendships and even the sadness that is part of my teenage years growing up.
    I hope that he will write a really good and mature scrip one day now from all the experience and heartaches and joy he has experience and it will be for SRK & Kajol and they will make it. I feel he knows them so well and for so long through ups and downs and I will hold my breath till that movie, story is produced and audiences can see it. The growth and love the years together has become. That movie would be epic for the hearth and I would go into the cinema with a big box of tissues.

    Both, the questions that Anupama frames, the connections she makes that are so organic, and the answers that seem so real and honest make Beneath the Surface so special for me. Watching the whole interview, be it SRK or PC or KJo, is like being on a life's roller-coaster and actually feeling the nuances and the subtexts as they pass by. Hoping there's more to this.

    He comes off as a genuine and aware person in his interviews but his movies rarely reflect that.
    They are always so cliched and stereotypical and so full of melodrama.
    Although seeing their sucess, the audience is at fault too for promoting that cinema to the point that we only have the tacky, over the top films in Bollywood nowadays.

    • @mannatp471
      @mannatp471 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      well, in my opinion I feel KJo has given cinema a totally different dimension. what's wrong in giving Utopia to the audience for those 2 years inside the theatres ,away from the normal stressful life. He definitely makes melodramatic films. but not to deny the fact that they are poetically beautiful.. with powerful dialogues and beautiful cinematography. He encourages clean cinema. where love is shown. beauty is shown. than favoring too real stuff and showing sex and fun and something as stupid as befikre. I respect him for making people smile and feel love. it's not his mistake that people don't do that nowadays. at least he keeps them alive in his movies :)

    • @sarahsiddiqui6494
      @sarahsiddiqui6494 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Poetic Existence
      And that is why I don't blame him entirely, it is upon the audience too.
      That is the problem actually, he makes escapist cinema and that is great, but then lets not decorate it as a piece of art. You yourself just said his movies make people feel less stressful and form a utopian universe and then you also go back and say its artistic.
      A film maker like Rohit Shetty says he makes escapist cinema and does just that so its not a problem.
      Then KJo and his fandom try to play for both teams, calling it escapist cinema but still refusing to agree that there is no artistic edge to the movies.
      I agree the cinematography is one of the best in his films but then he is one of the biggest producers in the country so he has all the resources, it isn't really that big of an achievement.
      He is so much for the arts, yet he only prefers working with established stars or star kids (however horrible they are) instead of promoting actual talent which he definitely can because he has a big brand and people will come to watch his movies.
      Again I'm not attributing all this to just him, it is the audience too and also the overall situation of our country too where if anyone tries to go beyond the candy fluff cinema they will be opposed and maligned for it even before the film comes. He received such hatred just for making Kabhi Alvida na Kehna which in itself is a very surface level take on infidelity.

    • @mannatp471
      @mannatp471 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      that's true somewhere. I personally loved KANK and I love his two hours of intense emotional roller coaster. Maybe because I am a writer somewhere. so I have deep respect for what he tries to build with those powerful lines and beautiful direction. Maybe not everyone loves that part of cinema. And maybe he isn't even aspiring to target them. Maybe he makes it for audience like me. and it's been wonderfully beautiful til now :))

    • @sarahsiddiqui6494
      @sarahsiddiqui6494 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Poetic Existence I agree. I believe KANK, Kal Ho na Ho and My Name is Khan to be his better films.
      I love powerful, fully in depth characters that bring you into the screen until you're part of the journey. I guess that is why I generally don't like his cinema because the films promise that but when you watch it the emotions turn out to be too superficial to make a connection and the characters lack depth.
      I mean when you watch Cheeni Kum you laugh with Amitabh, yet you are filled with anguish when he is convincing his father in law. When you watch English Vinglish, every emotion Sridevi's character goes through, you go through. And The Lunchbox! It doesn't even have the two characters meet at any point in the movie and yet you are dying for them to have a happy ending together.
      That's powerful stuff.

    As someone Karan's age he is telling the truth. You do grow not just physically but mentally and emotionally. We all do hopefully. Yes, I can see him looking back at old movies like "I would not do that now" because you by now have experienced different emotions and would handle things differently. I appreciate he knows his lane with job and in his personal relationships. Oh there is a lnae....we all have lanes whether celebrity or not. You should know the pros and cons of staying in or going out of your lane! I still like that he is real about his work life and personal life and I am certainly glad he and the old skool actors keep their lives private. I really do not want to know your bedroom stories. Some things should be personal.
