A little tip for the paper under your table when you flip your work over, talk to your local sign shops and get the leftover vinyl backing paper from them. Absolutely the best to put under your pieces, it's like having teflon, nothing sticks to it. Epoxy, paint, varnish, linseed oil, etc. and it doesn't ruin your finish because it's smooth as a baby's butt. We usually just throw anyways, so I'll bet they'll be more than happy to just give you it. But make sure they use a large format printer so you can get the 54" backing paper.
AWESOME!!! It doesn't get any better than this. Handmade in the USA!!! It's good to see local artisans still exist in our country. Great skill and great presentation!!! Keep it going.
People are probably wondering at the $40K price tag, but I can attest, standard, factory made office furniture is ridiculously expensive ($800 for a roll around, up/down, adjustable arm chair). The hours, what is your time and effort worth, spent on this piece were astronomical, clearly. Also, I imagine there was some negotiation involved. It's a fantastic piece of work. BTW Blacktail recommended your channel, and I'm glad he did.
The time spent making it, building it, transportation for such a big table in one piece and a crane (sorry don’t know the exact name of that tractor) to lift it to the second floor, the men to carry it, well not free! so no complaints about the tag here.
I am a commercial office furniture install, and the final shot of the table made me laugh cuz the table looks soo good but the chairs around the table look like Chinese import chairs that aren't even conference chairs. Good looking table tho
@@MattsWoodworks I'm half way through my first desk build using Ash so just trying to absorb as much info as possible. Is there a reason why you use liquid dye rather than powder?

Generally if they have the talent they get better. I think you have it. Very curious to see your channel in 1-5 years and hope you have millions of subscribers. Really enjoy watching anything woodworking, usually with my dad who has been a carpenter/shop woodworker for years. Keep it up dude, you are gonna make it with hardwork. 👍👍👍👍
Absolutely stunning table. There is not one thing I would change about it. You just can’t improve on perfection. And thank you for all the great information. 👍👍
@@MattsWoodworks - Your welcome, owned a large cabinet company many years ago in Sacramento but never considered myself a true woodworker, just a way to make money for me. I really appreciate watching your skill and talent with my favorite material, wood. Keep up the great work and can't wait to see your next video. I'm assuming your shop is in Sacramento?
Great work. Would really be neat to go back and revisit some slab epoxy tables from a year or more ago, to see how wood movement and general wear and tear has affected them.
Beautiful piece. I would love to see more about the base, how it is finished and where the power and connectivity outlets are placed. Maybe that’s a job for their own IT department but I hope it’s not just an afterthought when it could be integrated into the design in a slick way.
Beautiful. I think your right that the sheen depends on the piece and setting. Personally i like a high shine but with this piece i love it with satin.
Every successful journey begins with effective prep work. Spending thousands of dollars, investing 50 hours of time, pouring gallons of resin, too late to go back and finish prep work if you cut corners. Table is awesome.
I enjoyed your table production, nice work. One frustration that I have when I watch similar videos as well as cutting slabs from the tree, no one seems to relay the simple detail about wood thickness: ie 5 quarter, 8 quarter, 10 quarter etc. I cannot exactly explain why; it is just that I am facinated by standard table thickness. This info seems to make a complete stmt of work quality Derek West
Damn impressive table man. Just subbed. Got some Blacktail Studio vibes but added your own flare. Love the ceramic finish. I may not have saw it but did you round-over the edge of the table? Looks damn good.
Never seen one of these with epoxy at he edges. I loooove this look. Would it have been structurually unsound, if you had moved the middle foot to be in the length of the table instead of crossing it?
Thank you for the video. Subscribed. Looks like we live in the same area. I have a project that is 64” round and too wide for the wide belt sander at Hughes Hardwoods or my sled. Do you have any recommendations for a shop with a CNC? Truwood Builders? Thabks
Looks amazing man. Built a 2" thick walnut desk top for my standing desk 34" x 80" with a similar epoxy fill. Not live edge, just edge glued chunks. Good call on the pre-seal with epoxy prior to black epoxy. Didn't do that with my desk and got a bit of the black in a bit of the grain around the knots I filled. Don't mind the look, but wish I thought about it in advance! Have you ever had issues with epoxy shrinking on you after cure, or not really because you're more patient than me on dry times? hah. Either way, incredible outcome here!
Thants awesome man, I have had issues in the past with shrinkage, this one I let cure for a month or so to not even worry about it haha. Be patient bro!!! 😂
Thanks for showing us a great build, Matt. I had bought some spray shellac to seal up small areas before my CA touchups; do you think this will seal well enough, or is the spray lacquer that much better?
Exquisite table!!! Handling a project that size in essentially a one-person shop is just a mind-numbing and back-breaking task. Just a suggestion. For your still and non-moving videos, use a circular polarizing filter to remove the glare off the table's surface (a good filter will not add any color cast). It will be a bit harder to deal with the glare when moving around videoing with the camera since the polarizing filter must be rotated to be 90 degrees from the light source to remove the glare (just turn the filter while looking through the viewfinder until the glare disappears). In this respect, we can better visualize the grain and all the labor that went into finishing the table.
Thank you!! This is also great feedback on the filters, I need to try some of those out for sure, I'm so new to this I love learning and getting insight, so thank you very much!
One last thing , have you look into the option on install a couple metal gussets / strong back in between the two legs for stiffness instead of the third leg on the center of the table ?
Hey Matt great video. Any chance you could tell me the volume of epoxy used for this build? What did you charge for this build? Also wondering how you can give a client a ballpark estimate on cost when you don't have the slab yet, and therefore can't calculate an estimate on epoxy volume. Thanks!
Always wonder why when cutting off the most beautiful of the burl wood surfaces that these aren't incorporated into the nooks and crannies - no waste great wood.
Yes I’d say it’ll be all right for the most part with the edge treatment you did afterwards but it just depends on what was cleaned off and what wasn’t. Ever notice how airy that stuff comes out the can? With it being so light I’m not sure it doesn’t coat everything in the room eventually. You’re exactly right on with that paint brush technique on the edges. Best way to get resin/wood adherence. First time I’ve seen ceramic done on a table this large though. Was that the Black Forest version?
@@bradleyheathhaysable for sure, I made sure every inch was hit with the wire wheel, yea it totally settles and gets onto everything and anything. I used BF ceramics on this one, really liked how it came out. I’m sure there’s others too that will work just as good though
Did you cut the edges at a slight angle (10 degree?). Was this the part not shown. Thx for the starbond tip. I agree 2 coats of Rubio is better. Is the ceramic seal worth it. Seems very pricey. How much/ little do you need. 2 coats Rubio good for sheen but extra water protection seems smart.
You didn't show cutting the sides to the final width. I only remember you showing the ends being cut. It's killing me trying to think what step you left out.
