  • Poh Ling Yeow is many things - a chef, an artist, and a TV presenter.
She’s instantly recognisable, many Australians have tried her recipes, seen her paintings, or watched her on Masterchef.
But she’s also someone who pushes back against labels and expectations, describing herself as a “creative, fluid being.”

I love everything that Poh represents, she is modern Australian, not afraid to talk up her ethnicity and yet embracing everything Australia has to offer. Watching from afar in the UK, she is a fantastic role model for all.

She is not a fantastic role model. Most Asians grow up insecure in a Western country because they're different, I would rather have Asian people who are proud of their race as role models, not insecure people who don't even speak the language and then marry white men to assimilate into the country. She is a bad role model and is only popular because she's a banana (i.e. yellow on the outside but white on the inside). Gross.
Listen to the way she talks about how she wishes her hair was blonde and shining in the sun, that quite frankly is just sad. Asians don't need role models who act like whites are superior to Asians. The last thing Asians should do is pander to white people because they think that they are genetically superior. She is not a good role model at all and has an inferiority complex and places white people on a pedestal, but hey that's what Asians do overseas as well which is also somewhat pathetic. Go to your local yum cha place next time and see how quickly they serve white people and ignore the Asians. The only reason Poh is so popular is because she's a banana, yellow on the outside and white on the inside so she is "one of us". Like most Asian females who are insecure she also married a white man lol, as if marrying white will bump them up a class (believed by many basic Asian women).
She even said in this interview something along the lines of "I use my looks to my advantage" whilst at THE SAME TIME saying she didn't identify with being Asian. Talk about twisted, manipulative and straight up conniving.

@@Spacemonkeymojo We clearly saw very different interviews! Her clear message was that she REFUSES to be defined as anything but her own creation.... You are literally trying to box her in based on her race, saying what she should have done. The thinking that "Asian women should only marry Asian men" sounds very familiar to the fools they spoke of who say, "only Mexicans can eat Mexican foods".

Takeaway: don't label/define people, especially yourself. We are all citizens of earth, not Australian nor Chinese nor Malaysian - we are all one interbreeding civilization. Why? Because deep down underneath, inside, it turns out that we all love each other.

I'm blonde blue eyes, first gen Australian on my fathers side from European blood line. I've lived in 4 different countries and I totally relate to feeling beemed in, alien and out of place no matter where I am. I consider myself a part of the whole, the collective, don't define myself or others but still can't shake that perception regardless of where I am.

At 23.32 both you and Stan Grant burst out in raucous laughter when you mentioned you had a Morman friend who happened to be in town to look after his illegitimate child. The laughter was clearly because of the illegitimate child reference. What exactly was so funny? I found both of your reactions outrageous and insulting.

Im not too sure about how she doesn't identify as a woman or Asian. She must be in some seriously sheltered or privileged position to disregard it. She can not want to, but she clearly amdited gender inequality is still a huge issue yet she doesn't want to regard it. I didn't have anything special to take away from her interview. She's not saying anything new or delivering a thoughtful message. She just chose to and was lucky enough to ignore a lot of the barriers in her life.
