Derrick and the Dominoes was an Eric Clapton project. He was the leader of that band. Layla is his song. This is the iconic version, and it’s distinctively Clapton. He did record a slowed down acoustic version much later, about 20 years later, I think, which was also a hit. The story behind it is very interesting. He wrote it about George Harrison’s wife at the time, Pattie Boyrd, who later divorced George and married Eric. So it was a bit of a “forbidden love” song when written. The slow version was recorded a couple of years after he divorced Pattie.

This is the song Eric wrote to George Harrison's wife, whom he was deeply in love with (unrequited). Somehow, they remained friends even though she eventually divorced George to marry Eric. Thanks for doing this version! This also includes Duane Allman from the Allman Brothers Band (the one that sounded like a violin and chirpy chirps - it's a slide guitar), so two guitar heros are on this at the same time.
If you'd like to hear Duane playing that type of solo alone, check out "Dreams" by The Allman Brothers Band.

As stated earlier, by gfink2, Duane Allman was the one making the continuous violin like sound. Duane actually used a small Coricidin, sinus medication, glass bottle to slide on the neck of his guitar. Gary Rossington, the last original member of Lynyrd Skynyrd (who just passed away yesterday) used a glass bottle in the same way.

The piano coda at the end of “Layla” actually does come from a separate song called “Time.” It is credited to Jim Gordon, who was the drummer in Derek and the Dominoes, though it may, in fact, have been composed by his then girlfriend, Rita Coolidge who was also a recording artist. I bring this up mainly to pay tribute to Jim Gordon, who passed away earlier this year (March 13th) at the age of 77. Jim was a great drummer and a sadly tragic figure.
During the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, Jim Gordon was a much in demand studio musician, playing the drums for many different artists and on many historic record albums. He was a protege of Hal Blaine, also a noted sessions drummer, famous for his work with the group of studio musicians known as the Wrecking Crew. The list of artists Jim Gordon played with includes Joan Baez, The Beach Boys, Jackson Brown, the Byrds, Glenn Campbell, the Carpenters, Cher, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Judy Collins, Neil Diamond, and we're only up the the D’s. He recorded with two Beatles (John and George), with the supergroup Traffic and with the groundbreaking Steely Dan. At one point when he was living and working in Las Vegas, Gordon flew to L.A. every morning to make it to two or three recording sessions, before flying back to Vegas in time to play in the show band at Caesar's Palace that night.
Now for the sad part of the story. Beginning in the 1970s, Gordon began having mental health issues. Unfortunately, his condition was misdiagnosed at the time, and he was only treated for addiction to drugs and alcohol. However, he actually suffered from schizophrenia, including hearing voices in his head. In 1983, while suffering a schizophrenic break, he attacked his 71 year old mother with a hammer and knife, killing her. He was charged with murder and sentenced to 16 years to life in prison. Though the court recognized his mental state at the time, he was unable to enter an insanity plea under California law at the time. Gordon was eligible for parole ten times over the tears, but he never attended a parole hearing, and so was never released. He was still incarcerated (in a special mental health facility) when he died on March 13th.

Layla" is a song written by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon, originally recorded with their band Derek and the Dominos, their only studio album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (1970). Its contrasting movements were composed separately by Clapton and Gordon. The piano part has also been controversially credited to Rita Coolidge, Gordon's girlfriend at the time. The song was further inspired by Clapton's secret love for Pattie Boyd, the wife of his friend and fellow musician George Harrison. After Harrison and Boyd divorced, Clapton and Boyd eventually married."Layla" has since its release experienced great critical and popular acclaim, and is often hailed as being among the greatest rock songs of all time. Two versions have achieved chart success, the first in 1972 and the second 20 years later as an acoustic Unplugged performance by Clapton. In 2004, "Layla" was ranked number 27 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time", and the acoustic version won the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.

Derek and the Dominos were a one-off in the early 1970s. Megalomaniac Eric Clapton loved to bring in musicians from other bands for an album, go on tour, then leave to form another band (The Powerhouse, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos). Those four bands came and went in the span of 5 years. In this case, he left Derek and The Dominos to join the band that opened for them on tour... Delaney & Bonnie. Oh, and the piano outro was actually a separate solo song created by the drummer that Clapton forced him to tag onto the end of this song, or he'd kick him out of the band. Clapton found him using studio time late at night recording it.
The story behind this song: Clapton stole his 'best friend" George Harrison's wife Patti Boyd. She is Layla.

Duane Allman was playing slide guitar on this iconic song, while Eric was singing lead and playing the lead lick that Duane came up with. These were two of rock's greatest guitar players. Jim Gordon, who I believe drummed on this track, is credited for writing the beauitful piano bridge, although I've heard from several sources that he cribbed it from Rita Coolidge, who was his lady friend at one time. Truly one of rock's most-iconic songs, right up there with "Stairway to Heaven."

And BG, you are so right about the layering of the instruments, and the sound of longing in the second part of the song. There are a couple of other versions of the song. There is the much more recent version of Eric singing it much more mellow on an acoustic guitar, and there is a much more recent version of him singing it Derek and the Dominos style with the guitar and the piano, but he takes a different approach on the electric guitar. Hey Baby Gap and Mom Gap !!! OK, this song also features another famous guitarist, Duane Allman, who does the awesome slide guitar work on the song. That was the "violiny" sound you were referring to.
Also, Eric wrote this sound after reading an old love story about an Arabian princess whose father married her off and left her true love abandoned and lovelorn, because it was very much how he (Eric) was feeling at the time. You see, he was very good friends with George Harrison, and he fell in love with George's wife, Pattie Boyd Harrison and, at first, she avoided the issue but, apparently, the song worked because after she and George divorced, she and Eric got together and later, got married. As situations like this often pan out, she ended up leaving Eric and went back to George, from what I recall.
Yeah, to add a little more info about the group, it was a result of Eric's friends (mostly Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett) pushing him to sing more and be more of a front man, instead of hiding behind his guitar all the time, as up to this point, he had been very shy in that area. So, he created Derek (Hint: D-Eric) and the Dominos as a way to "test the waters", so to speak.
He figured, if it crashed and burned, then no one would know he was involved, but if it was a hit, then he'd let it be known that he was the founder and leader of the group. Well, of course, the latter happened, and this became his most successful song, along with a number of other awesome songs of his like, Have You Ever Loved A Woman, Bell Bottom Blues, Blues Power, Let It Rain and my all-time favorite, "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad?".
If you do that last one, PLEASE react to the "In Concert" version (th-cam.com/video/KHDsevl0brY/w-d-xo.html ), as it is a phenomenally underrated song, progressing from jazz-oriented in the opening, progressing to aggressive rock, to melancholy and sentimental in the end, kind of like this one. It is sensitive, emotional and just BEAUTIFUL.

This was considered a SUPER BAND put together by Clapton or Allman, not sure which, but Rolling Stone once ranked the greatest rock guitarists of all-time and both of them were in the TOP 5, with Duane Allman actually ahead of Eric Clapton. Allman was ranked #2 behind only Jimmy Hendrix. Anyway, that should give you some idea of what a SUPER BAND this was. This is the one and only album they recorded and it's viewed as a classic. Sadly Duane Allman tragically died in a motorcycle accident, in his early 20's, and that was the end of the band. Thus this CLASSIC was the one and only album for Derek and the Dominos. Lastly, another GREAT SONG on this album is "Bell Bottom Blues". Personally I like it even more than Layla and I have quite a few friends who feel likewise. Whether you do or don't, that it's even debatable tells you why you should make a reaction to "Bell Bottom Blues" by Derek and the Dominos a priority.

Eric Clapton knew exactly who he wanted on those sessions, and he got him; Duane Allman, who had his own outfit, of course. The two guitars are entwined together; they are hard to separate.

Best version ever because of two things. #1. Duane Allman best slide guitar ever. No other versions live or studio included will have him in it. That birdie sound is him on slide at the end. He died early in his career of a motorcycle accident (Allman Brothers Band was his main band with Gregg) The #2. Every live version of Clapton does not have the full piano part in the middle from 8:45 to 9:15 all of them are cut out. Why? Layla was Patti Boyd Harrison (George's wife at the time). Finally divorced him and married Eric and they got a divorce. Claptons 4 yr. old son fell out of the 53 floor of his apt. Inspired his song IF I SAW YOU IN HEAVEN.

Derek is actually Clapton's real first name. He changed it but to create this band he flipped back and that was pretty much it, plus his main collaborator, Duane Allman, had been killed in a motorcycle accident shortly after this was released

Der & Dom is one of the ' all star ' type bands , like ' Crosby, Stills , Nash, & Young'- mostly from Delaney & Bonnie Bramlet band, and they played on George H. ' All things must pass' ( after the Beatles refused to record it for 'Let it be' .... ) both albums released at about the same time. the group ' the band' is credited by George H. as a strong influence. has been mentioned - the slide guitar ( Violin ) is by Duane Allman , of 'Allman Bros. band'. D & D managed to only produce this one, 2 disc album. and a similar Live version.

Eric Clapton is influenced by Blues. This is why he version is more blues. A song with a long guitar solo at the end of the song is the blues musician allowing his instrument to speak to you. B B King guitar was Lucille. You should listen to his song Lucille.

Tremendous Pick, Eric Clapton's One of the Greatest. His life's full of tragedy, he pulls his misery out of his Guitar where you can almost hear his pain. In very short order His Band along with Stevie Ray Vaughan all died in a horrible airplane crash, then his 4 1/2 y.o. son fell out of an open 49th floor window in New York, March 20th, 1991 P.S.-I absolutely love that Piano solo.

I love both this version, and the unplugged acoustic version. Neil Sedaka also did the same thing with Breaking Up is Hard to Do. He had a kind of doo wop original hit in the early 60's, and then in the 70's redid it as kind of a torch song slowed way down and very poignant. I think I like the remake even better. You should do them back to back!

Yes, it’s true about Goodfellas, a great movie about star-crossed lovers growing up in the Bronx. However, the song was most famous for its use in The Empire Strikes Back.
