- Maintaining Tools, Including Sharpening Hand Tool are important when you have a leather craft hobby or business. Handmade Leather Belts, Repairing Handmade Leather Belts, Constructing Leather Belts, The Best Leather To Make Belts, The Tools Needed To Make Leather Belts, Tools For Your Leather Craft Hobby, are all topics that I cover on my channel. Today I will be sharpening a selection of tools that I use daily in my shop. A subscriber reached out, asking how I sharpen my Rons Tool edgers. I figured it would be a great time to show how to sharpen tool without spending a large amount of money on specially sharpening stones.
Below are a few vendors that I use on a regular basis.

The liner is Montana Leather Vaqueta in Brown.

I used a selection of tools purchased from many of the companies that support my hobby. Somewhat in order that I used the tools. The strap cutter is from Tandy Leather. I have used the strap cutting to cut close to 1,000 leather straps.

I used my Barry King mallet and strap end punches to begin to form the belt.

The stainless steel buckle and Chicago screws are from Landwerlen Leather in Indianapolis.
You can reach Eric Landwerlen at 1 (800) 827-9867
That covers the majority of tools and supplies. If I missed what you are looking for please ask in the comments. Others might be interested as well.
I used Weldwood contact adhesive to laminate the two layers of leather. The sewing was completed using Weaver stitching chisels in the 5mm size. I followed with Tiger Ritza thread installed with John James needles. I like the durability of the woven polyester thread. The Tiger Ritza thread is prewaxed making the process of using it very fast. The belt was sealed with TanKote.

Creating Tooled Leather a fun way to really change the appearance of a project. The stamping in the belt was created by Barry King. The axehead stamp is the number two size. If I were to purchase it again I might go with a number 1 to give a bit more room for the stitches when sewing the belt

You are one sharp tool!
I can show you how to create sharp tools!
Hand sharpening them tools is an art of its own.
I used to find it frustrating at times. Now that I am more patient, I find the process relaxing. Thanks for watching.
Thanks, Robert 👍
You Bet. Hopefully it’s helpful information. Enjoy your day.
I agree when you first get a tool ensure it is sharp. Then maintaining the edge is simple
100 percent right!
Thank you Robert, tool maintenance is the key to minimizing mistakes. The local nail polish store ordered me a product just for threads. You would probably call it an undercoat for nails. Works a treat. You will get the same tubes from Ivan for US$5.22 a piece. Thank you for the content.
Thanks for the heads up on the tubes. The best thing about my thread seal is the applicator brush.
Thanks Robert for the tips on sharpening the bevelers, also on the stiching chisels, I hadn't seen that before!. Cheers!.
I glad that you found the information useful. I hope you have a great day.
Thanks for sharing. That was some great information on maintenance of your tools. Have a Blessed Day Robert! Justin
Thanks. I hope it’s helpful
Another good video Robert.
Thanks Bruce. See you in two weeks.
I picked up a rotary punch at a garage sale years ago and it has been handy for punching new holes in belts when I dropped weight. Another great show! Take care!
Thanks. Hopefully you are warming up some in your neck of the woods.
@ Another 2 inches of snow overnight. Very unusual for the Pacific Northwest
Great vid! Thanks, Robbert! Ive got same rotary punch you have, Weavers and actually a very good one that has a base, it sets flat on bench, works great. But, like your doing, having to put new parts on, is downside. I went to the Osborne #153 Saddlers Punch. Talked to Bruce Cheaney about it, several times and Don Gonzalez. Thus is my favorite tool!! Lol. # 000 thru # 7 can use same tool. #8 and above are each separate tools. I rarely ever need anything above #7, if i do ill use my regular hole punches. Actually economical. You can get the #153 Osborne and one tube, for bout--$ 74.00.. Weaver sells replacement and/ or extra tubes to fit --#153--. Tubes are so much better, easy to sharpen or keep sharp. Luv it!! As you can tell, i do enjoy nice tools!! Lol. Only downside, same downside with a rotary-- if you gotta punch deeper , fuether away from the edge, you cant use.. course you have to take an extra 1 or 2 minutes to change the tubes in #153, but it is worth it. Ive used the #4 tube to punch thru 2 pieces of 9/10oz veg tan, making lacing holes on pocket knife sheaths. 104 holes and tube still sharp as can be.. and found place to buy tubes for $9.75@ , which is lot better than what Weaver and others charge.. Thanks again, Robert for sharpening tips!!
When I first started I had gotten a cheap set of stitching chisels off of Amazon. I could barely even get them through leather I had to give it a really good wack lol. I took a day and sanded each little prong and then took my Dremel tool with a buffing wheel and worked them out. I'm sure they don't work as good as a $400 set of chisels but then again I'm not going to pay that much lol. I have since bought some better brand chisels but I still use my cheap ones all the time because they work so well now. Always keep your tools sharp and polished it makes a tremendous difference. Love your videos and your work keep it up 😊
Thanks. It really makes all of the difference in the world. The sharp to works better, makes the process more fun, gives better results, and is safer to use…. Less effort and better control.
@InMyBusyLittleShop totally agree 100% and your right it's a lot safer too
Have a great balance of your week
Thanks for the great sharpening tips, Robert. I have the Sailrite rotary punch, which I believe is the same tool as the Weaver punch, but branded differently. The Sailrite was cheaper than the Weaver and the replacement tubes are each a few dollars cheaper. Check it out and thanks again for the advice that the best way to gain competence is by trying and doing! Enjoy your week.
Thanks for the response on that. I figured that they had to private brand the tool for others. Thanks again. Enjoy your day.
👋😃👍
Good Morning. Have a great day.
Thanks for the sharpening tutorial. Definitely a good topic to cover. How do you go about sharpening an oblong bag punch? Osborne bag punches basically come dull, and I've never been able to sharpen it. I've had to buy a second bag punch, the blue one, just to have a functional tool.
Tanner…. I just made a short on that topic for you. Check it out and let me know if I answered your questions.
@InMyBusyLittleShop Sweet thanks Robert.
Hey Robert, thanks for another informative tutorial. What type of buffing wheel do you use on the grinder? I always put beeswax on my punches (rotary & other) in addition to my chisels before using. It makes the function of using the tool much easier. Japanese water stones work well in sharpening my tools. Have a great day & looking forward to the next video.
It’s just a sewn 6” wheel that I picked up at a hardware store. Sharpening stones do a great job. I use them as well. The stones that I have are smaller and like the sandpaper for some.
Just not a fan anymore of the hole punch if I have more than 1 or 2 holes to punch. True, that the tubes are slimmer and do not distort the leather, but I also have the drive punches that you can change the punch tube in. Tandy makes a maxi and mini set. Those tubes are slimmer like the ones in the punch (and probably are the same tubes?). I find myself using that set of punches most of the time. Like I said the other day, I have been using a small oblong punch for belt holes. It lays flatter on the tongue and the leather doesn't pucker like when you punch a round hole.
Another way to polish the edger without the buffing wheel is to use paper or cardstock in place of the sandpaper over the rod. A little polishing compound on the paper, and that substitutes a buffing wheel. Jim Linnell was quite adapted to using cardstock and polish to polish his swivel knife.
Great reminders on sharpening and the importance of keeping sharp tools.
I guess I might have to give the small oblong a try. Thanks for the paper/card stock idea. I have used cardboard for hone back aways and haven’t used that technique for some years. Just kind of forgot about it. Thanks for the comments. It’s helps everyone.
They obviously don't make rotary punches like they use to, I had mine foe 30 years and cuts like I bought it yesterday
What model and brand?
@@InMyBusyLittleShop Maun industries model 2230 made in England
Thanks. I will check it out.
