spot on. that is my testing point for this piece. One thing that makes ABM so special is his absolute perfection in building the climax. He doesn't prepare for it 4, 16, 25 measures ahead of time. He starts at measure one. This piece is an interpretational nightmare. I have never worked harder on a recording of any piece ever. It has to be just right or the transcription just doesn't work. The 1949 recording is just unreal. probably my favorite piano recording ever. : )
Just wonderful.... Beyond wonderful...I have listened three times now because it is so inexplicably brilliant..... It's got to be his pianos; his incomparable trills;; his control and use of dynamics of the piano; the perfect synchronization of left and right hands, immaculate technique, amazing chord sonorities; brilliance in interpreting the score all put together to be a genius and Maestro....words fail
I love AMB's interpretation For me it is ultimate rendition, simply this piece can't be played better So deep and majestic. Bach is a God and Michelangeli his profet to reveal Absolute's will and thoughts to people
¡Bravo, Michelangeli! ¡No debiste habernos dejado tan pronto!...
the greatest piece of music becomes a sort of magical elixir capable of making any material desire useless. It simply enhances the spiritual side of the human being, particularly when played by people like ABM or A. Segovia.
Michelangeli makes the spine tingle in a way no others can approach. How does he do it? It isn't a question of technique, at least not directly; indirectly, yes, it's relevant, in that there are dimensions in Michelangeli's pianism which allow musical conceptions to materialise which might not dawn on others. Nor is it a question of structure, in the narrow sense of the awareness of overall proportions, judicious shaping of paragraphs, continuity of thought; but the way structure is projected and the way it's transmuted into emotional drama; these things are critical. The impact of all this would be negligible without a sympathetically attuned conductor and orchestra. Fortunately that's exactly what Michelangeli has.
TheElenabranick umm. he has a very well developed technique. But I honestly think you give him too much credit and ovation (Maybe more than deserved) the piece is an average piece. (when playing this transcription for piano) he plays it fast and his dynamics are good, but the way he plays it does lack feeling and expression, what I'm saying is that Busoni's transcription itself does not have a way to have the soloist express his true talent... it's too autonomous one can play it fast or slow, maybe with some legatto, or pizzicato at times but it is not really open to variations.
wonderfully hypnotic "Bach is like an astronomer who, with the help of ciphers, finds the most wonderful stars" -- FREDERIC CHOPIN "Now there is music from which a man can learn something" -- W.A. MOZART (on hearing Bach motets in Leipzig) "Not Brook but Ocean should be his name!" -- LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN ("Bach" is the German word for "brook") "Oh you happy sons of the North who have been reared at the bosom of Bach, how I envy you" -- GIUSEPPE VERDI "Bach is the most stupendous miracle in all music! " -- RICHARD WAGNER "Study Bach! There you will find EVERYTHING!" -- JOHANNES BRAHMS Music owes as much to Bach as religion to its founder -- ROBERT SCHUMANN "And if we look at the works of JS Bach - a benevolent god to which all musicians should offer a prayer to defend themselves against mediocrity - on each page we discover things which we thought were born only yesterday, from delightful arabesques to an overflowing of religious feeling greater than anything we have since discovered. And in his works we will search in vain for anything the least lacking in good taste" --- CLAUDE DEBUSSY The poetry, the atmosphere, the intensity of expression, the beauty of the preludes and fugues grip, overwhelm, and stimulate us. Let us not be afraid of the supreme contrapuntal science of the fugues, nor be overawed by the stern appearance and heavy wig of Father Bach. Let us gather around him, feel the love, the noble goodness that flow from each one of his phrases and that invigorate and bind us by ties strong and warm. - Carl Friedrich Zelter (letter to Goethe, 9 June 1827) (Zelter was the teacher of Felix Mendelssohn) Bach is the supreme genius of music... I do not know the names of the pieces, but I recognized the stiff ceremonial of the frenchified little German courts and the sober, thrifty comfort of the burghers, and the dancing on the village green, the green trees that looked like Christmas trees, and the sunlight on the wide German country, and a tender cosiness; and in my nostrils there was a warm scent of the soil and I was conscious of a sturdy strength that seemed to have its roots deep in mother earth, and of an elemental power that was timeless and had no home in space." -- W. Somerset Maugham (from 'The Alien Corn') Bach is the beginning and end of all music. -- Max Reger When eminent biologist and author Lewis Thomas was asked what message he would choose to send from Earth into outer space in the Voyager spacecraft, he answered, "I would send the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach." After a pause, he added, "But that would be boasting."
Also Agnelle Bundervoet, who recently passed away. Rest in Peace Agnelle!! You are missed as well!!! 2 superb performers. Have to find those vidoes!!! If any of you know whom to contact, please post it in your comment. God Bless you A. B. Michelangeli, Rest in Peace!!!! You are missed!!
To me this sounds more angry than deeply passionate. The piece was written by a young Bach, who had been on concert journey, leaving his healthy young pregnant wife - only to find that both she and their baby had died while he was away. Imagine the shock and the grief! Bach wote this shortly after.
filippeo which michelangeli recording of the chaconne do you prefer. i am waiting for someone to post the studio recording from the 50's. thank you so much for posting this. it made my morning.
if someone declares this to be the definitive performance of the piece, it seems to me that they are entitled to their opinion, and there's no need for anyone to react by lambasting that person.
I once heard a live recording by Michelangeli that had a pretty bad sound quality, lots of hiss, but that interpretatively was the best of all, do you know which recording that might be?

Very sorry but its about Michelangeli and not your recording, get it ? Who cares (no offense meant) ?

Another great version is played by Alicia de Larrocha. I strongly recomend it
fillippeo85 I love his performance very much. Would you let me know the recording date ? I would like to buy this CD. Thanks.
"O toenet fort ihr suessen Himmelslieder, die Traene quillt, die Erde hat mich wieder".

Oh, can you PLEASE send the 1949 (or was it the 1948) recording to me as well? I've been searching for it for ages....
When and where is this recorded? This seems to be the only stereo recording ABM has made of this piece?
Lugano,21/05/1973
anione have a sheet music of this @.@
www.free-scores.com/PDF_EN/bach-johann-sebastian-chaconne-partita-89152.pdf
I've just heard something which we can't reach
Michelangeli respect the sheet, Grimaud respect his heart, both are amazing :D
Divine...
How terribly off does the applause often sound.
JSB ...1685...non è possibile ...
How is it even possible to remove the piano from the minds of the audience if the music comes from the piano??? LOL
