US publishers seem to be averse to sprayed edges and wonderful end papers and designs on the actual hardcover inside. Just checked my hardcover and none of that. Those things don't really bother me but I wonder why it seems a very UK thing. As far as Amari goes, I looked forward to this mostly because it's a fantastical middle grade written by a black author, with a black lead character. So much fantastical middle grade seems penned by white authors. I read a lot of POC authors but found middle grade fantasy lacking in black authored books. It's not difficult here in the US to get middle grade books by black authors (I have quite a few on my shelves) but many, most, are more realistic-set stories. Of my 30 middle grade/ya books I have to read, 18 are by POC authors. But of the 8 fantastical ones I have, just 2 are by POC authors - Amari, and The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf, by an Aboriginal Australian author.

That’s really interesting. I watched an interview with BB Alston and he indicated the same regarding middle grade fantasy and the lack of black characters. It’s good to find a book bucking that trend. My very latest middle grade review is a wonderful Nigerian mythology inspired middle grade which you might like and another black female lead character! I will have to check out The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf - I love the title alone!
