the only language lesson, where I can repeat phrases without cringing.
I love Poland and go there regulary on my hollidays. Actually I think there is no language that so may ways to greet each other.
So the formal 'dzien drobe' can be shortend down to a slightly more informal 'dobre'. Especially in a shop people would rather more use the short form.
'Witam' can be translated to 'Hello' ans is another way to greet.
'Siema' is a way of greeting I see a lot online. In WOT for example. People somtimes use the long version 'Jak sie masz?' That literely means 'How are you?' but can also be used as a way of greeting, without expecting an answer.
(If an answer is expected 'co słychać?' would be used more likely. 'Stara bieda' is the answer. 'Old poverty' - Did I told you, I love this country?).
Another way to greet is 'salut'. But I haven't found out if it is formal or informal.

1:20 I would say "Siema" comes from "Jak się masz" what means "How are you" although for me (a normal Polish native speaker) it means "Hi" spoken in a laid back way. I wouldn't translate that to "What's up". I've heard "What's up" may be said as if it meant "Hi", although if you want to say "What's up?" more literaly in Polish, then it should be translated to "Co tam?"

Hi, a combination of letters "si" makes a [ś] sound that is close to [sh] in English, but still not the same!

Monika: In Polish/Kashub we use for how r u in lieu of czecz: "JAK TO??" or in french comment allez vous. Dzien Dobre is very formal and probably used in an official setting. Clarify if u have the time. Thanx.

What is the appropriate greeting in a local Polish supermarket in Chicago when speaking to a store employee, cashier, etc? I'm after the basic "hello", "thank you" and "good bye" words. Gracias.
When greeting a store employee, you would usually say politely "dzień dobry".

Thank you. You mentioned if you enter a store during the day as "Dzień dobry" and in the evening as "Dobry wieczór" but if you enter the store after midnight what would you say formally?
Mamy „dzień dobry” i „dobry wieczór”, ale to „dobry wieczór” coraz rzadziej się słyszy. Ja używam „dzień dobry” praktycznie przez całą dobę i nawet nie zastanawiam się, że w tym wyrażeniu jest słowo „dzień”.
Wyszukaj sobie:
„Dzień dobry czy Dobry wieczór?”
There is no special greeting in the middle of the night after midnight. Many would simply say automatically "Dzień dobry", as this is the most universal polite way of greeting. Some might also say "Dobry wieczór" after midnight if it is still dark, and that is also ok.
