    Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter was banned for life from the NBA on Wednesday after a league probe found he disclosed confidential information to sports bettors and wagered on games, even betting on the Raptors to lose.
    apnews.com/article/nba-jontay...
    Porter is the second person to be banned by Commissioner Adam Silver for violating league rules. The other was now-former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling in 2014, shortly after Silver took office.
    In making the announcement, Silver called Porter’s actions “blatant.”
    “There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter’s blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment,” Silver said.
    The investigation started once the league learned from “licensed sports betting operators and an organization that monitors legal betting markets” about unusual gambling patterns surrounding Porter’s performance in a game on March 20 against Sacramento. The league determined that Porter gave a bettor information about his own health status prior that game and said that another individual - known to be an NBA bettor - placed an $80,000 bet that Porter would not hit the numbers set for him in parlays through an online sports book. That bet would have won $1.1 million.

    I believe this will not be the last athlete who receives a lifetime ban for gambling. This is the precedent that’s been set and if the NBA (and all other leagues for that matter) want to keep the integrity of the sport, this is the only option.

    I appreciate that you made this a story Brodie. The empathetic side of me feels bad for Jontay as a person, but actions do have consequences and he crossed a line that the NBA couldn't ignore. I hope he finds a new career and refocuses his life in a positive way.

      No chance. The dollars to be gained by the leagues are just too long. The reason this isn't a bigger story is because the NBA's regular season barely merits fan attention. The *real* story here though is how quickly this got spotted. The system in place to assure bet fixing doesn't happen will never be perfect, but this was something that could have - if not should have - fallen through the cracks in the old days.

  • @TheTrueSCU

    Betting on an individual to NOT achieve a certain milestone opens up many avenues for unscrupulous individuals. Pay me $100 to NOT complete a difficult task and $200 to complete a difficult task, and I might take the $100 and invest my time/effort elsewhere. If the payout is reversed, then getting $200 to NOT complete a difficult task becomes the obvious choice because it is entirely within my power to achieve. Even if I'm honest and have every incentive to complete a difficult task for honor, glory, good of the team, etc, the collective effort others need to undertake to prevent me from doing so is relatively easy. Obviously, if someone Tonya Harding-ed me, they would obviously be investigated. However, there are many negative acts which occur in the course of daily living which could severely hamper my ability to complete the task; mild food poisoning or a flat tire might be enough.
    While I do not gamble, I would not be comfortable betting on anything where an outcome is entirely within the control of one-individual. A team can still win or lose if one individual says "nah, I'm good on the bench" to affirm a negative result. Whether the individual is complicit or not, they have too much influence over the outcome.

    I think the leagues here in North America will eventually have to follow the example set by the Premier League in England & outright ban gambling companies from being involved in their league as a sponsor & greatly limit their advertising. Starting from next season (which starts in August) all Premier League clubs are banned from having gambling companies as a shirt sponsor & gambling companies are barred from advertising at Premier League stadiums. In addition the UK government has banned gambling companies from airing ads on TV during matches & during programs that are for children. Gambling companies can still air ads but have to air them on late night programming. These steps were all taken to prevent the very thing that has happened in the NBA from happening in the Premier League, though the Premier League has had its own gambling scandal with Sandro Tonali of Newcastle who is currently serving a year long suspension for being caught gambling on his team's matches.

  • @martinarden9705
    @martinarden9705 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    They banned the player. They didn't deal with the circumstances around teams tanking. Between the trading, the injury bug that hit the Raptors this year, and the circumstances surrounding the Raptors' draft pick (it conveys to San Antonio if it falls outside of the top 6), there's more than enough incentive for them to bring in a player that might in turn have a vested interest in lowering their own performance for the benefit of the gambling community.
    Just to be clear, I'm not saying the Raptors were aware of anything. I don't think they were. I think this is a guy doing this on his own, and Masai Ujiri is way too competitive to intentionally get involved with someone with gambling ties. I'm just saying that as long as teams are willing to "rebuild" or "retool" or endure a losing season here and there for long-term gain, then this opens the door for players to do this again.

    I don’t know about other professional sports, but I know in boxing the Nevada gaming commission has no issues with boxers betting on themselves. Floyd Mayweather was not allowed to bet on himself against Connor McGreggor, because he was the promoter. Him being the fighter was not an issue. Floyd did admit that his friends did place wagers. Floyd did control that fight and won it exactly when the oddsmakers said the fight would end. I do not know who commissions online gaming, but at least in Nevada it seems like a team owner couldn’t gamble on a game, but a player could. The leagues seem to have rules, but I’m sure the NBA would keep a Giannis issue quiet. I’m sure the NFL would keep a Mahomes issue quiet. Just like MLB is trying to brush Ohtani under the rug. Jordan, Barkley, ARod, and Jeter were well known gamblers. I’m not alleging they gambled against their team. But the probability that at least 1 of those guys did is likely. The leagues have to protect their stars and did.

      @MrRicklynch Defintely. People don't know this, but Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain (according to Brian Tuohy, author of the books Larceny Games and The Fix is In) were betting on basketball in the 60's and nothing was done. Also, when Jordan was getting in heavy betting with unscrupulous people in the 90's, the NBA told him to go away so it didn't blow up into a much bigger issue.

If gambling is “tightly” monitored for the NBA, wouldn’t it be 10x as tight for MLB (ie Pete rose, white sox) shouldn’t reporters be asking more question about Shohei Ohtani situation. Is he getting a slap on the wrist because he’s a huge international superstar player playing for the storied Dodgers franchise.
