The biggest problem with this video is that you never really told them what the focus of eurovision is on. They practically all went into this thinking the focus is on vocals, when in actual, eurovision is about creativity and presentation, and each European country representing their love for music on one platform.
100% They also didn't explain that these are not unknown people like in the US - comparing it to The Voice or whatever is not accurate - like they're not huge artists either necessarily but they are people who were creating original music and making a career out of it prior to performing! Of course they're not going to do covers.
You know, he probably saw just a few seconds of Salvador's performance and he's American: they love fireworks and everything what's noisy and loud. Salvador said it exactly in his speech. His music is for people who actually understand music.
literally no one here gets it i’d much rather spend my days watching Eurovision instead of like the voice bc they are in touch with culture and do more upbeat pop songs that obviously some people in this video prefer but it’s better there
You know they've never watched Eurovision when they say that singing a ballad with nothing else isn't different, because trust me, that was the most unique performance that night.
Eurovision is NOT a vocal competition. It's not The Voice! it's the furthest thing away from the Voice you can get while still being a music competition.

@@boinkboink8448 many countries sing in their language and there are alot of calm and quiet songs out there in the competition, for me it was the worst song that EVER performed at eurovision I was bored to death
No, you are... Eurovision's roots have nothing to do with useless gimmicks such as backup dancers or special effects and more to do with what Salvador has done.
What's the point of performing live then? Of course the performance and the vocal skill sway the voting. At least the popular one, the pro judges probably do consider the songs on their own. If you don't think that those don't make a difference, you really haven't been following the contest.
I would be happy to watch an American Song Contest though, but you can't have all countries participate in Eurovision or it would stop beeing a European Song contest. If it is just Australia, fine, but I don't know where to draw the line. I loved Kali though, a guy from Martinique that represented France once.
They're free to have their opinion but saying that Portugal doesn't stand out from the rest is bullshit. Portugal was one of the only countries that sang in their own language
Exactly! Also, I think you need to have seen a few ESCs to understand that those pretty ballads get boring if there's 20 of them in a row, so they're not immediate wins. Portugal's stood out because it was different compared to the typical Eurovision ballad.
As a natural born and raised Portuguese I thank you for your kind words after the shit they just talked about Salvador Sobral, our singer. Thank you so much.
All of them are pop. Performers who get there make it because of the popularity of their music. Ergo, you won't find actual innovation there (that would mean taking a risk that usually doesn't pay off)
The portuguese singer had a beautiful voice and the tempo of his song was slow and romantic. A Lot of the songs were fast, loud and powerful, but the intimacy of his song truly stood out from the others. It touched the audience on a personal level.
I feel like most of these Americans are totally missing the point. Maybe it wasn't explained well enough. It's not a singing competition like American Idol or whatever, all the performers are already established singers in their countries. This is a SONG competition, which is why the songs are all original, that's not just some quirky gimmick. Oh and the music is not written by the performers (well, sometimes, but it's not the rule). It's not some scramble for fame and glory. The original idea was to unite Europe in a cultural exchange in the form of friendly competition to bring the countries closer again after WWII.
Many of the singers aren't established already, like Germany, we always take some unknown ones, and it works well sometimes, but most of the time they get 0 points lol
The Portuguese guy won because he was able to pass the feeling of the music only using the Melody, the lyrics were just an "ornament" on top of it. Few artists and songs can create this effect.
Hilarious how none of these Americans even know the format of Eurovision. It's not just a vocal contest; it's based on presentation, creativity, song, music, and vocals.

Well yeah no one in America knows what it is because most of us had never seen it or even heard of it. Also in America we have no competitions like this, we only have the voice and American idol which is completely different. But I would love to learn about it. Can you explain it to me?
@@zoemorin1623 each year, the participating countries will send a representative with an original song. Either they select them internally or they hold a national final where the country votes for who they want. There’s two semi finals where the countries are split in half and have to compete for a place in the final, and 10 countries from each will move on. There is a “big 5” which consists of the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy who automatically qualify for the final each year and the hosting country also qualifies straight away. The voting system is quite complicated but it’s split 50/50 between a professional jury from each country and public votes, and the winner doesn’t even have to win either of those votes to get the most points. The winning country hosts the next competition, so this year is in the Netherlands. I’m pretty sure they live stream the show on TH-cam so if you wanna watch it in May then you can, there’s a very strong line up this year :)

Marjo Naylor all the countries in the EBU can compete. Australia was invited to compete as a guest because the contest is so popular and then they decided to let them be a part of it every time so long as they qualify. because everyone loves the Australians.
A few facts that were wrong or not mentioned: * It's the biggest show in the world with more than 200 million viewers * It's called Eurovision Song Contest, not just Eurovision * It's not a show about who has the best voice, but the best performance * It's also huge in Australia, which is why they've been a contestant since 2015. They will of course never host the competition though * This was Portugals 49th attempt at winning and their first win. * No offense, but we don't want the US in the competition ;) Yes, I'm a bit of a nerd :)
PinguinVictor Yeah, Australia brings so much quality to the contest, so I actually think they deserve more to participate than UK. (even though I actually loved UK this year, but that was mostly because of the way Lucie made her song come alive with the beautiful staging and fantastic performance.)
They don't get the point of Eurovision 😂 it's not a vocal competition dude, it's about the song; both production, performance, stage show and singing. Stage show is such a huge part of it though honestly. But the essence is the quality of the song. Not just the catchiest, most upbeat, radio friendly, which is what I think Americans don't get. These songs do get played on radios yes, but that's not why they're chosen. They're chosen for being good and well made. The guy who kept talking about vocals though, it made me laugh because he was too hung up on "olympics of singing". No mate, it's not the olympics of anything, it's a competition made to unite a continent around something creative and beautiful. ☺️
A lot of them saying that Portugal had no "flair" but what made Portugal song stand out to win was the simplicity of both the song and the performance, as Salvador said in his speach "we live in a society with fast food music" and "music is feeling not fireworks" and in a way he is right
Interesting... only the youngest didn't see the brilliance of the Portuguese song. It does stand out immensely. The fact that this is a competition doesn't mean that every song needs to be over the top, "hype" or whatever. Sometimes simplicity and the right dose of your country's local music influence does the trick.

The day US participates in esc is the day the song contest dies.
If they participate once, it would be fine. Nobody would vote for them anyway. I'm all in favour of letting a different non-European country be invited to participate each year.
Like I think that these Americans don't get that the Eurovision is all about representing your own culture as a country... It's not like X-factor where you'll have to compete to have the best voice this is about something bigger ...
kristian poulsen I'm American and even I know that it wasn't just a singing competition. That's what kind of irritated me the whole time about some of these Reactors, they need to see more in the performances.
Btw, IT IS NOT a vocal competition, it was created to give a sense of connection between the european countries after WWII, it's not only the music, it's the message itself - strenght, criticism, love, passion, hope, making people remember things that happened in the past.. these. Not "covers" or meaningless songs.
Calm down romeo. It's just a song competition. Every person with a life sees it as that. 95% of the people probably don't even know that it's made because of WW2.
"he doesn't stand out from the rest"- actually he does. If you had watched all the songs played, then yes, yes he did stand out. He wasn't flashy nor cliche, his voice was good and his song was beautiful (understood none of it, but I really don't need to, to hear how pretty it is)
If you thought Portugal didn't deserve the win then you have no understanding or appreciation for genuine talent hands down, dude in the orange t-shirt sit down! -_______-
It's also about music, otherwise why have people perform original songs? and a performance doesn't have to be flashy to be moving, don't get me wrong I love the craziness and campiness side of Eurovision but his performance and his story deserved to be recognised.
That's the problem Cookies. Europeans conquered basically the world. And from these, they changed a lot of cultures with their influences. Same as goes for the UK and Australia. So, technically, most of the Americas, and a few from Asia and Africa (including my country, the Philippines) are allowed to become a member of the EBU and be allowed in the contest.
Netherlands were my winners based on their amazing vocals, no one came close to their vocal perfection! Portugal won because he showed a lot of emotion and really got into the song. Although he was not my favourite I can understand why he won.
that guys talking about what stands out or not but has never watched Eurovision in his life. A song like portugals stands out in Eurovision because it's not flashy like other performances
Wonderland Daphne. It's not a vocal competition like The Voice or something, it's a song contest! The melody, lyrics, staging, and choreography are all important aspects, as the performance as a whole is judged. The winner this year didn't have the best vocals of all the participants but charmed the viewers with a great stage presence and an emotional song. Cheers from Sweden! :)
yes what he/she said^ the reason why I loved the winner so much was because he stood out from the crowd because he had no "show" at all. it was just him and his beautiful song
I'm from Europe and I'm pretty glad that the guy from Portugal won because he was singing a song in HIS language and I think that every of our countries should do it like that
me too, otherwise we´re not really representing our countries. Sweden had a guy who is of the swedish natives and he whould´ve won and gone to eurovision, that would´ve been epic. Not Robin doing what has been done a gazillion times before.
Scott needs to understand that the competition is not all about the vocals, it's about the song aswell. I mean it's called the eurovision SONG CONTEST. If it was all about the vocals there would've been completely other winners throughout the years
US, make something on your own. Since most of the americans don't even know what Eurovision is, there's no point for you to join in. Australia got invited because they had watched it for years before they entered the competition. You have a long way to go. Greetings from Estonia.

Yeah, cos Israel, Armenia and Australia are so very European... :)
But Australia was competing.
Marjo Naylor all the countries in the EBU can compete. Australia was invited to compete as a guest because the contest is so popular and then they decided to let them be a part of it every time so long as they qualify. because everyone loves the Australians.
I think it would be ok if a tiny bit of eurasia joined like armenia and Israël
Also why is Kazakhstan in jesc? Like was this just Daneliya or what?
No way. US should stay out of our contest. It is a family moment in which all of the Europeans get together and we do not want this to change...
Αναστάσης I'm American and I 100% agree with you
A few facts that were wrong or not mentioned:
* It's the biggest show in the world with more than 200 million viewers
* It's called Eurovision Song Contest, not just Eurovision
* It's not a show about who has the best voice, but the best performance
* It's also huge in Australia, which is why they've been a contestant since 2015. They will of course never host the competition though
* This was Portugals 49th attempt at winning and their first win.
* No offense, but we don't want the US in the competition ;)
Yes, I'm a bit of a nerd :)
I love this, I love you mentioned a lot. And yeah US please stay out of Eurovision Song Contest
Johan Ruda US, please, do NOT enter on the Eurovision, we beg :'3
Like Europeans don't really want Australia in EUROvision, no offense also.. unless the country moves in the Atlantic or something lmao?
I actually like Australia in Eurovision, I mean they are not 'merican's. But that is just my opinion
PinguinVictor Yeah, Australia brings so much quality to the contest, so I actually think they deserve more to participate than UK. (even though I actually loved UK this year, but that was mostly because of the way Lucie made her song come alive with the beautiful staging and fantastic performance.)
More people should sing in their own language instead of english, its more unique and beautifull
Itamar Medeiros true i like hearing them too
I completely agree.
Amen XD
You're the MVP
A lot of them saying that Portugal had no "flair" but what made Portugal song stand out to win was the simplicity of both the song and the performance, as Salvador said in his speach "we live in a society with fast food music" and "music is feeling not fireworks" and in a way he is right
No, no Americans. Keep away from Eurovision :v
That orange dressed guy has no taste
I agree
Yeah. Nothing was good for him. Irritating dude.
Exactly
He's full of salt
I appreciate how honest he is in his reaction.
@Tesla-Effect why not? What do you have against Americans?
haha their faces of disbelief that something can have a huge audience and high production value without the US being in it
Sergio: the first guy to know the difference between spanish and portuguese in this thing
Well, he should, his father is brazilian and his mother is dominican......
5:08 Oh Ethan, the portuguese guy was the one who did something different unlike most of the participants.
At it gurl
It wasn’t very well explained to them at all
Btw, IT IS NOT a vocal competition, it was created to give a sense of connection between the european countries after WWII, it's not only the music, it's the message itself - strenght, criticism, love, passion, hope, making people remember things that happened in the past.. these. Not "covers" or meaningless songs.
Calm down romeo. It's just a song competition. Every person with a life sees it as that. 95% of the people probably don't even know that it's made because of WW2.
Yea that's why Portugal won....
"he doesn't stand out from the rest"- actually he does. If you had watched all the songs played, then yes, yes he did stand out. He wasn't flashy nor cliche, his voice was good and his song was beautiful (understood none of it, but I really don't need to, to hear how pretty it is)
I think the lyrics were already translated, pretty sure you can find them online if you look for them. :)
TheNeonGuy Really? That awesome, thanks for telling me!
OMG massive respect to everyone who said that US should stay out of this!! 👏👏👏👏
Emily Atkinson Totally agree I think our country, Portugal is amazing 💜 and I totally agree that we deserved
In Eurovision, the best song rarely wins.
Eurovision is a SONG contest, NOT a Vocals contest otherwise it would just be a bunch of opera singers!
It's about the Song, NOT the Singer!
It's about the package as a whole
it's about politics :')
" MUSIC ISN'T FIREWORKS, MUSIC IS FEELING " SALVADOR SOBRAL 2017
VOU VENDER ISTO NO EBAY
He's right, but Eurovision is kinda about fireworks tho xD
I love the guy who assumes Eurovision is a vocal competition. He has so much to learn.
wannabe one direction... seriously?
Ian Bear Ikr
Yeah that guy deserves a punch in a face for that comment
Time stamp?
"He doesn't stand out" um he stood out the most by not having flashy
"Nah, it's too cheesy"
*welcome to Eurovision*
I think US absolutely not should be allowed in eurovision, australia is enough
That's the problem Cookies. Europeans conquered basically the world. And from these, they changed a lot of cultures with their influences. Same as goes for the UK and Australia. So, technically, most of the Americas, and a few from Asia and Africa (including my country, the Philippines) are allowed to become a member of the EBU and be allowed in the contest.
I refuse to call any of these amateurs TH-camrs. They didn't recognize the EPIC SAX GUY!?!??!
Note that they are Adults, not TH-camrs
"this is a vocal competition" obviously never seen Eurovision before😂
Ahahahahah right? xD
Leanne Nicholl yeah but still I think that bulgaria shuld have won (I'm not from bulgaria)
Dude, Eurovision is not a vocal competition. 😂😂😂
It's a meme competition. Make burning pianos not war.
It's a cheesy freaky music festival and things get especially interesting when you realize your neighbouring countries didn't vote for you...
6:32
No one knows it's the *_ULTRA_* Sax guy 🎷
They didn't recognize the EPIC SAX GUY!!! So sad
FrostPanda yeeeeees Legeeeend🎷🎷🎷🎷
Netherlands were my winners based on their amazing vocals, no one came close to their vocal perfection! Portugal won because he showed a lot of emotion and really got into the song. Although he was not my favourite I can understand why he won.
_Irish_ Deco_ exectly😂
that guys talking about what stands out or not but has never watched Eurovision in his life. A song like portugals stands out in Eurovision because it's not flashy like other performances
Kaleb Briggs yeah. portugal was amazing, unlike the other poorly written pop songs.
Salvador is such an amazing performer! As he said "music isn't about fireworks, it's about feeling".
Way to go, Portugal!
"Isto foi tudo comprado!" as soon as he had the award in his hands! Loved it!
The Sax player from Moldova is actually the Epic Sax Guy
Eurovision ISN'T just a singing competition, it's a SONG contest! All is evaluated: staging, voice, song! EVERYTHING!
"Staging"? WTF?! That's a song contest seu burro it isn't musical act contest.
no offence, but i don't want the USA to join.
Italy totally underrated. Read the lyrics of full version and you realize the cleverness of the song.
Fun fact: Celine Dion won for Switzerland back in 1988... (For those who did not know)
I can't stop laughing, IT'S NOT A VOCAL COMPETITION. IT'S EUROVISION
"I was not expecting a horse mask in Eurovision."
It's Eurovision. That isn't the oddest thing we've seen.
Yeah - let's show them Lordi. Now THAT was weird
Let's show them Serduchka, that's the definition of weirdness.
usa for real please just stay out of eurovision
GGBABE yea after all it's about Europe that's why it's "Eurovision"
GGBABE Let Canada get into this because Celine Dion won it once.
I agree, but other Americans may disagree because even though it is called Eurovision, Australia is in it. Like whaaat?
^ we qualify.
these people took eurovision more serious than europeans do lol
Kitty Östergren true lol
"This is a singing competition" boy I don't think you understand what eurovision is about 😂
Yachi Jassi wot
I really wish someone on the staff had corrected him.
Yachi Jassi so what is it all about
Wonderland Daphne. :)
yes what he/she said^
the reason why I loved the winner so much was because he stood out from the crowd because he had no "show" at all. it was just him and his beautiful song
Actually Portugal did stand out, because how different and unique it was compared to the other countries
I agree less flash more talent
"this is a vocal competition" oh honey
Paula Jokilehto litle they know
right it's more like which country can buy votes 😂😂
HAHAHAHAHA "its a vocal completion" i've never laughed so hard
Augusto Nunes what???
I'm from Europe and I'm pretty glad that the guy from Portugal won because he was singing a song in HIS language and I think that every of our countries should do it like that
I agree with you.
me too, otherwise we´re not really representing our countries. Sweden had a guy who is of the swedish natives and he whould´ve won and gone to eurovision, that would´ve been epic. Not Robin doing what has been done a gazillion times before.
Italy had a song in Italian too? Hungary too?
Manubibi Walsh so? I think that's amazing lol
EnMaMu14 chill mal hahaha it's Not that deep
"this is a vocal competition" see thats where youre wrong
See thats what it should be
The guy with the orange shirt got me so pissed off. Especially when he called Kristian a wannabe of Zayn and One Direction.
Scott needs to understand that the competition is not all about the vocals, it's about the song aswell. I mean it's called the eurovision SONG CONTEST. If it was all about the vocals there would've been completely other winners throughout the years
The portugal guy was really bad and I would fall asleep if I needed to listen to 2-3 songs.
But we won. And the song is amazing!
Just clarifying that this is not a singing contest. It's a SONG contest.
US, make something on your own. Since most of the americans don't even know what Eurovision is, there's no point for you to join in. Australia got invited because they had watched it for years before they entered the competition. You have a long way to go.
Greetings from Estonia.
At least some of them realized the rest of the world is tired of the US ^^
How did they not cover Epic Sax Guy
