  • Earlier this year, I decided to challenge myself by learning how to shoot film. In this video I discuss my experience using the Leica M6 and how my first few rolls of film turned out!

    This is a very common "issue" all lenses have a "sweet spot". The point where the lens is the sharpest. I usually google the sweet spot setting for every lens I use.

    the city shots are just awesome! keep shooting. oh! I think that looked you got back has to do indeed with the lens. Some older lenses bring that effect. There are people that love that and use it as chosen style. Sometimes it can be a nice thing in the sleeve, but I'm not sure it is the case every time

      Thank you! Yes, after doing a bit more research it seems this is a quirk of the lens! I'll have to keep playing with it and see if I find a shooting situation that I like the look :)

    happy that my comment was of some help . using the hyperfocal setting is another way to set the near focus area to infinity . there is a down loadable chart that you can google , and sometimes i will put these distances for the various f stops on the bottom of my camera .
    also , using f stops 8 , 11 , or 16 , just guessing the distance will work most of the time . when i was using film and had a darkroom , i really enjoyed using a rangefinder leica . leicas were affordable back in the film days , now they are out of my range , but i was lucky enough to find reasonably priced leica m8 . now i am back enjoying rangefinder photography again . if you google my name , my flicker account will come up .

    Hi Inna,
    great setup you have there. I had exactly the same, and the reason for going for the pre-asph summilux 35mm was, at least for me due to its compactness. The only thing is that, in order to protect the (expensive) lens front element, I had to use its lenshood, which is fairly big. Anyways, I loved this setup and the lens when stopped down to 5.6 it reaches the same sharpness as the summicron (2.0) of the same era.I would go for 1.4 only when absolutely required, such as in the dark, otherwise I' d stick to 2.8 at least. Also take into account lens flare, when shooting straight into the sun. All that said, great set of images too, I like the first image of the second set a very lot.

      @innayas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks so much for your insight! I found the native lens hood that came with it wasn't doing much blocking out sun flares due to the shape of the holes, so I just bought a rectangular one on ebay that should do a better job. Haven't tried it out yet but hopefully soon! And agreed, I'm loving the sharpness of the lens at 5.6 or higher. I think I generally prefer shooting at a higher aperture for my style to begin with.

    It is great to see someone new to film. I love the Leica M series film cameras (I have an M3) but I think you should consider trying a classic manual focus SLR as well, not as a replacement but a supplement to your analogue creativity which you clearly have in abundance. This would give you a different and some would say easier focussing experience. There are many classic manual focus/manual exposure SLR's available. Might I suggest you try something like an Olympus OM1n, the same era as your M6 and costing a twentieth of the price!

    I find that unless I'm shooting portraits or in low light I usually never go below f5.6. If you're constantly shooting it wide open you're going to get that bokeh "blur" you're talking about and focusing is super hard on a rangefinder. If you want everything in focus use a higher aperture.

    It looks like you are using the 35mm Summilux Pre ASPH. That lens wide open is super soft and has that "dreamy look" which can be an acquired taste.
    You have a great setup there and enjoy it.

    something to consider when using a rangefinder leica is to zone focus using
    the f stop and markings on the lens to set what will be in focus .

    • @innayas
      @innayas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the insight! I just watched a great video about zone focusing and tried it out over the weekend. Definitely will take some practice but hopefully it will make me a little faster at shooting subjects!

    • @aristodeable
      @aristodeable 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zone Focus is of course possible with every kind of camera, the lens should have a depth of view scala for dedicated f-stops. But every classic lens got this, this is not exclusively true for Leica, with Linhofs Panorama cameras this is the only way to operate.

    How and why did you go straight for a Leica M6 when you've never shot film before? You would have been way better off with a slr style I'm guessing. Especially considering the fact that you don't even understand how aperture works and you're not familiar with manual focusing....🤔

      I received a government grant during COVID so I bought 3 film cameras (Leica m6, Mamiya 6, and Beaulieu 4008). Something I wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise :)

    Surprised to hear a photographer calling bokeh a “gaussian blur” . Jeez . Improve your creativity that’s the reason you choose m6 omg. I don’t know if it’s this millennial generation but something with those videos about people discovering film like discovering fire is obnoxious . Slow down your photography.... bla-bla-bla. No need to do a video to brag about your new M6 by the way you could have bought a canonet rangefinder for 60 bucks to fist see how you feel with film first ( amazing camera definitely underrated ) . Anyway love the shot of the sky with birds .

    Wait a second. So you are a wedding photographer and you tried a Leica Summilux, set it to f/1.4 and you wonder why not everything is sharp? :D Have you aver heard about depth of field? Don't you know how razor thin dof is on 1.4 aperture? Alright, let's slow down. Portra is a pretty "fast" film. Even though it's 400, it's recommendet to overexpose it some, like 1 stop for example. Especially if it's already expired film. So, you can set ISO on the back of M6 to 200 or memorize it while exposing in the viewfinder. If you are not photographing moving subjects, you can slow down the shutter, to 1/60 for example and then close down the aperture -> greater depth of field. Old Summilux, not asph is not a great performer wide open in today's standards. If you want sharpness you should stop it down. I mean, basically every lens stopped down gains sharpness, especially the "fast" lenses.

She's referring to the specific effect the Pre-ASPH Summilux-m has at 1.4 where highlights tend to glow and distort, some love this effect some don't. You have to shoot with it to understand what she means.
