Hopefully the hint of sarcasm in the disclaimer regarding Ali's style from 6A and on was evident - regardless of how her fashion tied into her character, the way Sasha was treated by the costume department was awful and did her no justice whatsoever.

Sasha’s weight gain didn’t affect her beauty or her character. Their decision to dress her as though she was forever on her way to a PTA meeting, was completely unnecessary. She’s always been stunning.
It's so frustrating to see how the costume designers really didn't know how to dress Alison after Sasha's weight gain. I think that has a LOT to do with her matronly style. They didn't know how to accommodate her weight, but also hollywood seems to try to associate frumpy/badly-dressed with being overweight when one's weight doesn't make them less stylish. And, Alison helping Hanna loose weight was a big plot point in the early seasons/flashbacks. Alison being bigger than Hannah is confusing for her character when she harassed Hannah so much for her weight. It makes me think that the writers wanted to humble her and make her nice because apparently it's crazy that someone that isn't skinny could be the "it" girl or be confident.
Hollywood doesn't know how to dress fat or plus sized girls. it's true and disappointing :(
It wasnt planned by the writer for her to gain weight. It was a medical condition Sasha was diagnosed with that caused her weight gain
Think thats why they wrote in her pregnancy
maybe you should express yourself more respectful about the costume designers and Sasha’s weight

@@dadada8464 They’ve known each other since she was a child. He was a friend of the family. Sasha’s mother posted pictures of them when Sasha was about 10, and he was 16. Her family doesn’t consider it weird that he basically groomed her because he’s a “good Christian.”

They really put effort to ruin everything about Alison even her iconic style, it's just shameless.

I think it has a lot to do with how poorly written the character was after she officially returned. Should’ve never happened.
You can totally tell the stylists tried to cover her up when she gained weight 🙄
Ironically their choice in style made her weight gain even more noticeable.

I also feel like the reason Ali's clothing wasn't super revealing was that Sasha was like 13/14 when playing Alison in the early seasons!
By not giving Alison good clothes is just a different way of being fat phobic. Sad the producers/designer’s couldn’t venture out of there little box world view and put effort into their job. And it’s embarrassing because it’s so easy to find good clothes for someone Sasha’s size. They just didn’t want to because they don’t want to address their own feelings towards people not a size two.
Absolutely agree. Sasha looked fantastic at events and just out and about where she dressed herself. The costume department did her such a horrible disservice and I can't imagine how much it must have affected her self esteem.
That brief mention of Hollywood being incapable of styling any sort of weight above a size 0 is the most important part of this whole conversation, imo.

I mean it kinda makes women that are size 0 because of genetics feel guilty or bad at being that size. We can mention that they couldn’t style her due to her change without making others feel bad

I feel like in the perfectionists they actually put effort into dressing her up to her body type. I wish the original show put that effort in because she looks really well dressed in the perfectionists

As someone with PCOS I also struggle with weight and its gain, but that does not mean someone has to suddenly dress like they're pregnant and trying to hide it. It would be fine if that was a plot point - Allison is pregnant, but trying to hide it, but given how it was the real-life stylists going "she's no longer skinny enough for our liking" makes me sick. When I heard Sasha talk about her PCOS and the struggles it came with, I felt validated, and it helped me look into it as well. I honestly hope it didn't impact Sasha's mental health when she went into the studio and they showed her the outfits. I feel incredibly lucky that I've never really struggled with body image issues, I just kinda go along with how I am, but when you're in such public eye, and the people who you work with basically say - you don't look right, and the reason isn't something you can control is disgusting.
PCOS is not something anyone chooses. It sucks. It comes along with so many other health complications and possible future complications it's infuriating. She was done so dirty and for no fucking reason.

@@marinaalexis You’re welcome. I also remember you said that Alison’s clothes are never that revealing which also made me realize that Blair Waldorf’s clothing style from GG was never that revealing. Unlike all the other Queen bees/popular girls in other movies and tv shows.
I feel like her clothes in the beginning seasons weren’t to scandalous since she was the youngest, I remember reading that she was hired to film PLL when she was 13ish

Yes that is the reason why. Though this video was analyzing her character the show and in the show Ali is not significantly younger than everyone else.

Those bangs they put her in were an assault on the eyes, and rounded her face way too much. Face framing layers and curls would’ve suited her much better.
Omg I loved watching this analysis!! So much in-depth details for Ali’s growth in just her wardrobe! I personally never noticed she had consistent colors, but did notice that the hue/saturation must have played a role especially near the end of the show! Didn't she find God at one point? The way she dressed at that point, the floral midi skirts and mature blouses, reminded me of how I dressed when I was Mormon. It reminded me of typical modest Christian girl fashion that you'd see on Pinterest. I think that may have played in to that aesthetic too, as well as her trying to look mature and distance herself from her teenage self, like you said. (And the weight gain thing was definitely part of it, too.)

She gained A LOT of weight so they just stuck her in hoodies and loose cardigans. I can’t imagine how embarrassing that was for her.
yes I hated how they styled her sexy for the PLL promo-shots (just like the other girls) and then in the show they dress her as a grandma
I really hate the way that the creators or the style team did after when she gained weight. It really took away from who she really was as a character and also her clothing the weather to try to cover her up. You could still be a badass no maters what weight u are
This video was so well done!! Im such a huge pll fan and it makes me sad not many ppl do analysis type videos on it like they do for others such as Gossip Girl. I think it would be so great it u did more of these analysis.
In fact i have a video idea for u if youd like. I would love to see u tackle the writers mishandling of alisons redemption arc, because im a big ali fan but even i can say that her redemption couldve been wayyyy better, like the writers thought that being good = soft and boring. Like no alison shouldve stayed sassy while still being a good person.
Her whole character was just inconsistent af and lowkey felt like the writers didnt know what to do with her as a full fledged character, they only knew how to write her as an mystery enigma type.
They kept flip flopping between ali being good and untrustworthy it was so annoying.
Also worth mentioning that the writers robbed us of highschool emison!
Seriously they couldve been THAT mean girl/soft girl ship but instead the writers left it till the very end and then pushed it with the whole pregnancy thing and it was just so poorly developed.
I love emison truly, but just like alisons character, emison was also poorly handled by the writers who mostly just cared for the straight ships.

Alison's poorly handled redemption is one of those PLL-related subjects I could go on about forever haha. I made a video a few months ago discussing why I don't believe Ali can be considered the real fifth Liar, but I will definitely consider making a video more specifically about how the writers bungled her redemption!

The writers just never developed that bond between ali and the girls as well as they shouldve, they always kept her separate and untrustworthy it was so infurirating
This was even worse with mona who the girls kept antagonizing till the very end 😒

I never really noticed but now I watch this video it does make alot of sense.
The thing is... I never believed the "I'm a good fragile friend, please rescue me" persona.... I remember watching the series and waiting for her to turn evil again. I don't remember seeing any believable redemption story for her character. Fine, her ex abuse her but they didn't show any remorse when it came to her old behaviors and patterns. Her character became so needy and desperate.
I loveddd her style in the earlier seasons and In the spin off it’s suits her more than her style In seasons 6&7

Unfortunately not, I don't watch either of those shows so I definitely wouldn't be the right person to analyze anything about them!
Holy shit I just realised that this costume thing works in real life like I usually have certain colors for certain layer and I act depending on how much of each color I wear (pink-sweet, fangirl. Black-leave me alone, idc about shit. Red-look how fucking great I am etc)
I think you're making something out of nothing here. With PCOS, the weight gain is most noticeable in the belly. That's why the costume department made her wear all those loose tops and baggy sweaters. They basically dressed her the same way they would a pregnant actress who isn't pregnant in the show.
I feel like a lot of style analysis videos assert subjective theories as facts instead of looking at the culture of the time. I don’t think Alison dressed modestly because she didn’t need to show off, I think it’s because PLL aired on ABC family. Or that she wore popular brands because she was less wealthy than Spencer rather than her being a generic popular girl who was wearing the trending suburban brands of the time. Or that the ruffled purple top foreshadowed her disappearance. Still just a theory.
