IS THIS YORKSHIRE TOWN FOR US? SEARCHING for a HOME after VAN LIFE

  • Vanlife is a funny old road. We've lived full time in our campervan Daisy for nearly 3 years, and life on the move brings highs and lows, challenges and triumphs, but also, for us, some of the most wonderful times and experiences we've ever had. In fact, these last three years have been the best of our lives by far, so there is no greater confirmation that living in a van was the right thing to do. Which means we might even do another three years! Who knows? But still, it's nice to look around for future possibilities as settling down crosses our minds, and may in fact force our hand eventually depending on a number of factors. So why not drive around and see for ourselves, since we happen to be exploring and travelling to these places anyway?!
    #vanlifeuk #homeonwheels #yorkshire
    In this video we visit York, a city that needs no description, and explore many of its famous streets, including The Shambles, which we discover has a much darker side than its current wizard-related association. But we also feel a bit overwhelmed because York is popular to say the least. Later, we head to a smaller Yorkshire town close by with an entirely different atmosphere. Pretty and charming, but somehow bustling on a more relaxed scale, and with a magnificent church and Minster, Beverley tugged at our heads and hearts. We wish we could have spent more time here to film, but suffice to say we will be back. And if we ever settled anywhere, well...Beverley could well be in the running. A shout out to one of our lovely subscribers, Sue, aka manc_wanderer on Instagram, who recommended this gem of a town a long time ago to us. Cheers Sue!

      Ahh thank you so much, that's really motivating for us to read this morning! 😍 We really appreciate that you'd want to keep watching. Of course, these are ideas that are potentially a long way off (if they even happen at all) and even if we did stop, we would intend to keep the van so we could still get out and about. It would be a shame not to make videos anymore, so hopefully whatever happens we'd still find a way 😁 However, for now, we are still in the van and may be for some time yet, so everything will continue as normal for the immediate future 😍 Thank you for your lovely comment ❤️

    Really loved this one, brilliant filming & excellent choice of music plus both of you so happy.
    You reminded me using the disused railway of something we used to see on our ordnance survey maps years ago when looking for somewhere to go marked 'dismtld rlys' which tickled us pink at the time & the memory still does.
    The White Rabbit led Alice down the rabbit warren into some of her adventures, induced it's thought by Lewis Carroll's use of laudanum.
    Spent time in my garden this week observing some spectacular pigeon colours by the way to go back to a previous video. Iridescent pinks, purples, greens & more. Truly beautiful much maligned birds.
    Look forward to your next video, hope you find somewhere lovely to set up home one day.

I can’t cope very well with crowds so I feel I miss out on seeing a lot of things/places. Morning Irene 🌞 Crowds are definitely not our favourite which was why we found York a bit overwhelming, so you're not alone ❤️ I find filming is a good distraction however. Beverley though, that was just the right level for us - everything you need but still felt quaint and cosy.
      Definitely with you on the carvings and stonework etc in these buildings! It's truly unbelievable to think of the level of detail, and all created centuries ago without the tools or technology we have now (not to mention the safety aspect 😬🙈). The more time moves on, the more buildings feel like cardboard pop-ups in comparison.
      The tour was really informative I just wish we could have filmed in there, but we did learn quite a lot along the way (and it was nice to get out of the crowds for a bit).

    Wow, York looks fantastic! Countryside looks like the Skåne flats, and I felt there were many elements of Germanic aesthetic in the buildings as well, apart from looking very, VERY essentially picturesque British. It reminded me of Ystad and bits of other Swedish towns. Imagine living in the Shambles. Oof, too much no matter how pretty it is.
    Beverly looked so pretty, like a mini version of York. Love the gothic masonry in the British medieval churches. The minster was very imposing! Looked more French/German than British to me. Thank you for the explanation and all the other interesting tidbits.
    The prices have gone wild here as well. A Burger meal is sometimes more costly than getting a pizza. Crazy. I'll take the later, thank you very much, but prefer to cook at home. They have "about to go bad" bins in stores here. I love them because you can get great deals and don't have to plan ahead. 😅
    The channel would still survive even if you pick a home base. It would just be a bit longer between your fun adventures.
    Until next Sunday, cheers from Skåne!

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Good Morning 🌞 Ooh you know funnily enough we were reminded of Skåne driving between York and Beverley. It's a funny place because most parts of Yorkshire are known for its wild rolling hills, but there's a surprising amount of flat areas too.
      I think you're right about the buildings in York, it feels like there's lots of influences there and yes, that Minster seemed very French/continental in style! Beverley was pretty but it was more the feeling of pace and atmosphere it had, without sacrificing a thriving community, that kind of drew us in. The balance was just right 👌Definitely some Ystad vibes in both places. Interestingly, there is a big viking museum in York, and I think viking history is big in that part of the country. Whether that has any influence on how York and its surrounding areas look I don't know, but it seems interesting that Skåne/Ystad seem to share a lot of similarities with York/Yorkshire (I guess part of that is just pure Geography though).
      We love nothing more than a rummage through the reduced goods section in a supermarket 😁 You get used to certain times and days to go as well. Definitely with you on choosing pizza over a burger, and as you say, the latter is often pricier now 🤷‍♂️
      Whatever we decide to do about our future I think we'd like to keep the videos going regardless, even if they became less frequent. But that's in the future for now 😁
      Hope everything is well for you back in Skåne, have a great weekend, whatever is left of it 😍❤️

      The starting in the afternoon thing is definitely a vanlife trait! And of course, we are very grateful for it. However, it's a terrible terrible habit in the UK winter, when you wake up and only have a couple of hours of light to play with 🤦‍♂️
      I think you would both enjoy a day trip to York regardless. One park and ride had a specific motorhome area, no overnight, but a safe place to leave the van, get a bus into the city, and leave at the end. Not too shabby.
      If we did ever settle in the delightful Beverley you would of course be welcome guests of honour...free park up, too 😉 Actually probably not, as if we could afford somewhere with a drive 😂

    We've just moved from Beverley after 22 years of living there. Back in 2002 it was a good place to be but outside of the town centre it's become a building site with hundreds of new houses , very few of which are affordable for young locals. Along with that there's been no expansion of infrastructure of schools and doctors. Yorkshire Water have built a brand new sewage works a couple of years ago but it's already struggling to cope. Still, don't let me put you off.

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh that's a shame and I'm sorry you felt this way to have to move 😟 Still, it's always good to hear the other side. Honestly, our expectations of towns are not particularly big, we've lived in and seen all sorts of places and trying to find the "perfect" town is...unrealistic and fanciful at best. Beverley certainly struck us as one of the best we've seen but it all depends what you're after I suppose and you do raise some interesting points. New build housing rarely seems affordable these days for most people.
      Thanks for the feedback and I hope you're happy wherever you've moved to

      We always find it fascinating how some minsters/cathedrals/abbeys are totally free, whereas others can charge anything up to £15-20 per person. Some of the best and biggest are free too 🤷‍♂️ We are more than happy to give donations for these - some now charge you say, 3 or 5 quid to take pictures etc, again we don't mind that as it's a donation, but the ones charging top end prices seem a bit questionable!

      Yeah I'm looking for a van, maybe a vw but older one. If I was a more confident driver for parking I'd get one like yours because of the space! It's brilliant. 👍 👍 👍 I will get one though. Just a matter of when/money.

    Maybe the Cathedrals are those with a spire/s? A minster maybe more square and possibly has live in priests? Save money while in the van and wait for an economic crash, and hope land/homes are up for grabs in Beverley, for people with cash.

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think there's probably a few little differences like that, but the main thing seemed to be minsters originating in Anglo-Saxon times, and cathedrals later, and cathedrals being a seat of a bishop. But it seems like quite a grey area.
