Also, you never hear the professional mermaids suggest you buy from knockoff brands. That's important to mention. And it's important to talk about these topics. Not everyone understands the importance of buying from a reputable company 🧜🏼♀️.
A lot of people will comment on my content that it’s a joke that I take it so seriously. None of this is funny and water safety is NO JOKE. The community means a lot to me and I hate seeing people get taken advantage of!
Exactly, people's lives and safety is the most important and then having fun. We want to support the creators who keep designing and making the tails we love so much. So they can keep making more. ❤️
Looking forward to your video on how knockoffs are unsafe! When I started I saw a lot of comments/posts on knockoffs being unsafe but no one ever explained why. It almost felt like everyone was only saying they were unsafe because they were mad the designs were stolen (understandable but not helpful for new merfolk). I think this will be a great resource for helping new mers understand and avoid knock off tails!
i honestly appreciate you discussing what to do if you do get a knockoff tail and how to make sure its safe but still enjoy it - in the BJD community, people will see that you accidentally spent tons of money on a knockoff doll and tell you to 'throw it away' or 'never post about it.' and thats just so sad! if someone has already gone through the frustration of not getting the product they were hoping for, they should at least be able to try and enjoy what they got!
Storytime, a couple years ago when I wanted my very first mermaid tail, I asked for a mermaid tail for Christmas with no prior knowledge to what companies were trustworthy, safe, and produced tails that I liked. Fast forward to Christmas and I was gifted a tail that my family had bought off of Amazon.. Along with a cheap plastic 20$ monofin, that barely even fit in the tail skin. The fabric the tail had was made of practically t-shirt material. The monofin I was given had small pockets with uncomfortable plastic straps, which would scrape on the back of my ankles. Young me didn't really care because hey, first mermaid tail ever, of course I'm excited. After a few swims with it, the monofin had snapped. In two. While I was swimming in it. I simply heard a loud **SNAP** and the fin had separated from the pockets, cutting the cheap fabric and the base of my foot, too. If I didn't practice getting in and out of that cramped stretch-less tail, I would've been in serious trouble that day. Needless to say I was upset that I had to get rid of the fin.. I still have the super cheap knock-off tail that I now recognize has a Mertailor Guppy fin shape. I use the fabric as spare crafting material. TLDR: Knock-off mermaid tails are not a joke. Do your research, and pick a tail from a reliable source.
For me, it blows me away, that people in today’s society value saving a couple dollars more than integrity and honesty. Also With safety in mind, you certainly can’t afford to skimp on safety measures that you would get with reputable companies. Every time this pops up on some social media group, I’m always shaking my head, because people are just flocking to defend people who have clearly stolen these concepts and art forms. And the person who, in my opinion, quite knowingly did so, keeps playing the victim.
Hi Courtney, I think it's good that you're making these videos. Many are often unaware of how much work, effort, strength, tears and sweat it takes to design something. Many are not even aware of what is behind a product. Thanks to such videos, people are sensitized to it. It is important to show these pages in addition to all the beautiful all about the hobby mermaiding. Please keep up the good work. Greeting Chanti from Germany
Thank you for this. Since I find my tastes tend to run towards non-standard flukes (serpents, bettas, etc), very rarely do I find myself going with locals and pine for the more Eastern markets. I've held my wallet because knock-offs are so rampant, and I don't want to put my money towards them if I can help it. And it's all the more...."fun" to navigate through all of that for some of the smaller independent companies that are in Asia who do legit work. It's like finding a needle in a haystack. And for a parent or a family member trying to do their research on mermaid tails, they have so much to wade through. 😑
This is another HUGELY important topic because not all Eastern companies are making knockoffs which is something I would like to cover one day as well. It’s actually become a very hurtful stereotype that needs to be squashed.
@@CourtneyMermaid It's become so prevalent that a lot of people are turning away from them, with what I think is an understandable reason. This might even be further exacerbated by the company having not having the tail, or even worse, they're no longer in business? Stuff like that. I would suggest AturDive for beta flukes. They have a taobao but it is hard to navigate so I use aliexpress. Unfortunately whoever runs their shop in English stocks a lot of knock offs but as long as you go for the ones with the AturDive logo watermark you will get original designs with fabric that is exactly as thick and nice as fin fun(that is the only fabric tail I have to compare at the moment.) My first tail was a knock off from Amazon and I was so upset the monofin was literally 2 flippers and vinyl tied with a shoe string.... After one swim the fabric started to get fuzzy. I definitely learn the importance. Safety is a priority!!
It’s really interesting to see this happening in a new a industry. In fashion for example this sort of thing happens all the time, like as simple as changing the neckline and it’s really hard to prove because of the saturation of the industry, but at the same time you aren’t potentially putting yourself in danger from a t-shirt. Mermaid tales are a different ball game and should never buy a knock off tail, do your research, I spend ages looking at different tails before deciding to go with finfun for my first tail.
It’s very true. I’ve been working as an artist most of my life and have had my work ripped off in other ways too. Mermaid tails are definitely different though given the safety factor.
You know it’s funny when everyone was going mad over the Lucia fish fin, I looked into getting one as I thought it looked amazing. I was so excited it was from a UK tail maker! But when I went to purchase one I realised that the shipping was going to cost loads as it was coming from I think China? So from then on I just avoided Lucia as I knew she wasn’t the ‘maker’ of the fin. I still love the look of that fin and would like to try it. Do we know who the original maker is though?
Why is it asking too much for some honesty from these companies? Like you said in this video, drop shipping is ok so long as the products are safe and aren't knockoffs. I personally would be willing to purchase a tail from a company who is upfront about it being a drop-shipper for designs knowing that they have tested the products and they are safe. I am not willing to purchase things from a company that continually lies about "owning rights" to designs they didn't even come up with themselves. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. when you do your video highlighting the makers, please show the one that also do the Larger plus size.. many times i see sites that say 'We have Plus size.' NO they dont.. they are calling plus size USA size 12. that is not plus size that is a normal women size.
it was hard before for plus size people to find stuff, it is getting worse now. and now having to weed thru this or that " plus size " site and find out Nothing would fit over a USA size 14 is depressing.
I mean really i though this was for Everyone ?? why does it seem like it isn't
sorry about my rant..
They copied Mermaid Avenue’s Phoenix tails…ughhhh
Can you please email me any evidence you have or links or anything? I want to look into it! info@vancouvermermaid.ca
It's sad I could watch this video and can list all of the tails that's 75% of these tails are ripping off
Thank you I almost bought from one of those I am glad that I didn’t now thank you again
Omg! It makes me mad seeing diy monofin tutorials.

Today is the day!!
Being a little indipendent maker, I'm so thankful my Friend 🤍 that you are using your platforms to tell this important things and making the community a better place. 🤍 I for now have only 2 flukes shapes and 2 scales types available for my Tails and I've put my heart in creating them and I hope to bring to life many dreams in my future, receiving my first orders and bringing alive the dreams of my clients 🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍You are Mermaizing

Finfun just had (is having?) an amazing sale!! I got a tail for me and one for my boyfriend with a monofin for what I was budgeting for a single tail. If you're patient, wait for the deals instead of buying knockoffs 🤍🌊
