It'd move into position, then unload its entire load of 15 rounds in 45 seconds (shoot, with autoloader) before scootin'. The Swedish military had determined that, firing on Soviet positions, everyone was under cover in about 45 seconds so they pointedly designed the weapon to do all its firing in that timeframe. The successor to it, the Swedish Archer system, can fire three rounds, in 15 seconds, and scoot before the first round has landed. It can empty the entire mag (20 rounds) in 2.5 minutes and reload in 10. Eight of these have been sent to Ukraine. Because they have to shoot, then scoot, Bofors focused on rapid firing rate with the auto-loader. The ability to shoot while scootin' ... potential game-changer. Given counterbattery + drone threats, shoot on the move for artillery is the kind of solution where you'd have a harder time finding someone NOT interested in it. Ukraine has both shown how critical Artillery remains and how important mobility matters for survivability for Artillery
mobility of this kind does nothing for the lancet threat, which is the main killer of Ukraine’s SPG as documented by the extensive lancet strike archive on LostArmor’s website. I’d be more excited about effective EW and more shell than I am about this. Cool toy, but it’s provided in negligible amounts to Ukraine, its unproven, and it solves a problem that doesn’t account for many of Ukraines killed SPG. It’s naked propaganda meant to distract us from the fact that we are not doing enough to aid Ukraine.

Badasses like Chris make it easy to consum normally very dry information which is perfect for the next generation of military officers. What a time to be alive!
If the shells can course correct, or self target when over a target area, then shooting on the move doesn't matter for counterbattery fire. Being able to shoot without minutes of set up is more important here.
Doesn't shooting on the move let you do counterbattery while advancing (eg thunderrun) and if the enemy has smart shells any time stopped is dangerous.
Even if they don’t course correct, modern fire control systems are so accurate and reliable, you can select the target you want to fire on, hold the trigger, and the system will only fire once it’s guaranteed to hit The computers really do most of the work nowadays
@@Grimshak81 True but good self-guided shells also do inertial guidance and should be able to get an initial fix from the firing unit (which must know where they are to fire). Besides, it's going to be damn hard to jam GPS artillery shells during most of their trajectory as they achieve miles of elevation. By the time they can be jammed they'll be on course.
@@petergerdes1094 GPS is a signal from low powered (44W) satellites thousands of miles away, aimed at the whole earth rather than a target specifically. Receivers are dealing with signals in the sub femtowatt region. Jamming it is a pile of piss. Putting accurate IMUs in a shell being fired out of a cannon is not easy. If you are going to spend that much putting electronics and a control system into a projectile, you might as well use a rocket instead and fire it from a MLRS. The sole reason to use an artillery piece is that the rounds are cheap, but getting complex capability from a rocket is cheaper.
@@danhobart4009yeah that tiny part “modernized” is the important part. In your logic the F35 is just a modernized variant of the Messerschmitt Me262 “Schwalbe”.
The Boxer is such a versatile platform, IFV, CRV, medical evac, cargo, command station, AA, howitzer. Some military can probably ask for a way to quickly build runways and Rheinmetall and KMW will present them an aircraft carrier-Boxer
Aussie's opted for the Boxer CRV A2/3 hybrid with Spike LR missiles and Iron Fist active protection and even managed to get a contract to produce 103 of the same spec vehicles for the German Army due to the fact they want these vehicles ASAP. The RCH 155 would be a good fit for us Aussie's due to the fact towed artillery has been made vulnerable in the Ukraine war, but one question needs to be asked he said it's easily can be transported by air, that might be a C-17..... but can it fit inside a C-130J Hercules?
It's a modified naval gun turret with a light cruiser caliber. It does everything a destroyers five inch does, except someone finally wised up and put one on a ground vehicle. Truly one of the modern arms industries "why didn't we do that?" moments.
The RCH-155 is a far lower cost option for self-propelled Howitzers which allows for more units to be purchased for larger platoons of self-propelled Howitzers allowing for larger dynamic fire operations dominating the battlefield. The RCH-155 enables faster resupply transit; it is an efficient step forward for artillery dominance. Towed artillery will be useful in trench warfare; however, it needs to be protected by counter-drone systems.
The US Army needs to buy this exceptional system and also upgrade the M 109 A7 SPH with Rheinmetall's exceptional and magnificent L52 155 gun/cannon to give our artillery more punch. And if this sounds like an AD for Rheinmetall, then it probably is because Iam a fan of the company.
Well... it is Germany's RCH-155 howitzer. EDIT: I see the title was changed so no longer someone can be misled into thinking it is Ukrainian construction :)
The shooting slowly while moving is a diversion the main thing; no set up or brake down time it can roll out of cover start and finish its mission right away. No clenching while you pull in outriggers and such
It doesn't go in the Boxer's super modular concept anymore, since regular Boxers will have 8 wheels, and the 155 howitzer's last prototype has 10 wheels.

Not a game changer. At 8:53 it shows a small fixed powder charge. US Artillery can sit outside of 30+ kilometers from the target. That powder charge looks to be charge 4 (green bag) and that may have a range of 15-18 kilometers.

@@Easy-Eight what the heck. Even the german pzh-2000 20 years old and literally the sucessor of the m109 which we also used until 20 years ago, was able to shoot 40 km and with current ammunition over 70 km is possible. you make an conclusion because of a picture where you believe something "looks to be" a charge 4? this is so.. how? i mean how could you have this thought and came up with a conclusion that american artillery can shoot more far because of which kind of powder back you see on this picture. you have different kinds of powder charges in a tank howitzers for different ranges and thats besides that what you see on this picture wouldnt enable an conclusion regards range even if that wouldnt be the case in some kind of fantasy parralel universe. i mean.. did you really believe german artillery would be able to shoot only half as far as american artillery. How old are you 10 or 80? something in between is probably unlikely
From the British perspective it is kind of funny that the majority of our vehicles are now going to be boxers after we withdrew from its design process in the 2000’s because it ‘didn’t fit the requirements’
Not just design process....we built the bloody prototypes...and paid over £400m to develop it.
Quite how we managed to not have production rights to it following that investment and the German's (and Dutch) ended with it all is one of lifes mysteries....
@@dogsnads5634 It was always a german development project, that's how
@@swunt10 No it was joint UK and Germany, with Netherlands joining slightly later. UK paid in £400m for its development and even built the prototypes...the idea was a common wheeled APC. Production would be in all 3 countries, GKN in the UK.
@@dogsnads5634 The lead program is german, every other country applied to join. The development was done in Kassel and Munich (program head quarter) by Rheinmetall and KMW (now KNDS). That's why it didn't matter when first france and later the UK left the program or when the netherlands joined or when the UK re-joined. That's just formalities.
PS prototypes where build by and for every country who has at some point been a signatory to the program... so you can stop yapping on about that as if it means something

I still remember how Ukraine reciving the RHC-155 in 2025 was announced sometime in 2022, and how I thought this would be completely useless as the war would already be over for sure...
It’s ALMOST like they don’t want the war to end
@@jefflemaster2850well yeah… neither Ukraine nor Russia wants the war to end yet. Neither of them have accomplished their objectives.
Not 2025. But 2027. So, yeah, Ukraine will not last this long if we look how it's going on for them on the frontline right now.
Ah, nothing more sour than badly aged milk.

Upvote for the C&C Generals sound bytes.
Thanks!
Given counterbattery + drone threats, shoot on the move for artillery is the kind of solution where you'd have a harder time finding someone NOT interested in it. Ukraine has both shown how critical Artillery remains and how important mobility matters for survivability for Artillery
Once the drones aren't jury-rigged consumer stuff I'm not sure how much protection motion will offer.
mobility of this kind does nothing for the lancet threat, which is the main killer of Ukraine’s SPG as documented by the extensive lancet strike archive on LostArmor’s website.

You have to give Rhinemetall a load of credit for developing this system when artilery was considered a backwater and not of interest to anyone.really impressive. system, I think it can completely revolutionise warfare - wheeled continusously mobile artilery and drone spotting...

They will at least know where to not shoot.

There must be so many active officers and future officers watching this channle that its actually effective for military tech companies to advertise here.
Even if they don’t course correct, modern fire control systems are so accurate and reliable, you can select the target you want to fire on, hold the trigger, and the system will only fire once it’s guaranteed to hit
The computers really do most of the work nowadays
Russia is pretty successful in jamming GPS guided shells though.

The Boxer is such a versatile platform, IFV, CRV, medical evac, cargo, command station, AA, howitzer. Some military can probably ask for a way to quickly build runways and Rheinmetall and KMW will present them an aircraft carrier-Boxer
This is the equivalent of a queen moving around a chess board!
As a a former FA officer, this is absolutely amazing tech if holds true, very intriguing!
Those Command and Conquer soundbites just unlocked a part of my brain, took me back instantly.
I'm convinced that the design for that mobile artillery was stolen from a picture I drew of a tank when I was 7 years old.
Brining back walking fire with a twist...the arty moves too!
It's a modified naval gun turret with a light cruiser caliber. It does everything a destroyers five inch does, except someone finally wised up and put one on a ground vehicle. Truly one of the modern arms industries "why didn't we do that?" moments.
No, it's a land system. Germans tried to put the pzh 2000 turret on a ship but it didn't work well as it was not prepared for rough conditions.

It doesn't go in the Boxer's super modular concept anymore, since regular Boxers will have 8 wheels, and the 155 howitzer's last prototype has 10 wheels.
The 10x10 is the Piranha HMC.
And it still works on the Boxer because the Boxer has much more gross weight and payload than the Piranha
