    Katie Halls's statement "I have never felt as beautifully strong..." really resonated with me. I have been on numerous extended wilderness trips and have never been able to describe the feeling before. Traveling, under your own power, in the wilderness, brings with it a sense of invincibility coupled with an immense feeling of vulnerability, independence coupled with dependence and pride along with humility. Truly that sentiment of 'beautifully strong' comes as close to encapsulating that balance as I have ever heard. Well said!

      @@lureofthenorth I think you guys, simply weakup a desire in me that I made sleeping 25 years ago, back from James Bay as a Diamond drillers teams...See, we had good challenge up North, just like my father had to, while I was a kid... And so, seeing you guys, remember me when I face challenge with a team in this particular cold winter and how I use to be proud, linked like brother's should, with a sense of accomplishment...So I so much appreciated watching you struggling and catching your feeling, and care for each other's... THANKS VERY MUCH for all your investment in this adventure.

    We understand what this group has been through and appreciate the concept of reliving the voyageur's way of life. In 1990, we did a similar trip (albeit not as tough) by canoe from Matawa to Lachine (Montreal East) with students and a few adults. A trip of a lifetime creating lifetime friendship. Thanks for sharing

    Areas of the body that are always a concern, toes, fingers, face, earlobes, lips and EYES. Snow blindness is nasty and can also result in searing eye pain and headaches. Wear good sunglasses during the day to deal with reflective light off the snow. If there is a great deal of sunshine keep the face protected with SPF and especially the lips. The reflective nature of the sunglasses will fry your nose and upper cheeks so even consider some zinc covering. I hiked in a glacier in BC when it was sunny out and sun damaged my lips which required surgery to remove a freckle. The surgeon called the freckle a "sunspot" and removed it as a precaution against melanoma. Just because the temperature is cold does not negate the dangers of the radiation. Sorry about being longwinded. I really enjoy these videos and being outdoors. Just wanted to share my experiences and help keep people safe.

    You cannot underestimate the practicality of flexible toboggans. A solid skid would teeter and tip on bumps and rocks. The plastic slides as well. Wood is heavy and can ice up if the ground has water in it, especially near streams, lakes, ponds or rivers. Spray a bit of Pam on the bottoms or WD 40. Nice and slippery.

  • @SherwoodBotsford
    @SherwoodBotsford 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Slush: More common far from shore -- or rather less common close to shore. Wind is signficant. If the wind has been from the NW, I *think* you will have less slush on the downwind edge of the lake.
    Trails: Stop at noon. Break the next day's trail during the afternoon. Breakers should take ONE unloaded sled with them. This leaves a smooth trail for the next day.
    Sleds: Having the sled attached to you with poles makes it easier to control in rough terrain, especially downhill. Google "Pulk"

  • @BryanSarauer
    @BryanSarauer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The comment at 20:52 rings so true. Hauling 100 - 150lbs on my sled ranges from brutal to easy peasy, depending on the trail and the conditions.

    Amazing video! Cant wait to get my Anorak from you guys :) But after seeing that broken snowshoe I'm nervous about pulling the trigger on a pair HAHA. For anyone looking for a good Canadian outdoor company who tests there gear and has fantastic customer service I highly recommend these guys! The real deal. Along side Hoop from wintertrekker and Kevin Callen I have been blessed with the help and guidance from all of them right here in my home province of Ontario!!

    • @lureofthenorth
      @lureofthenorth  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the only one we've broken in 8 years of guiding (excluding some poor quality "refurbs" in the early years that shouldn't have been on trip in the first place!). You can generate a lot of leverage with the long Huron or Ojibwe shoes, but you'd be very hard pressed to break the shorter bear paws you just ordered. If they do break, give me a call!

    • @Naughtz
      @Naughtz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You guys are fantastic! Count down is on til I'm outfitted up and trekking the North. Will be contacting you in the future for the mukluks or might even do the coarse to meet you guys. All the best in the New Year. Hope you get out for some adventure as well.

    Had to watch this one twice! Best work I've seen outside of Wintertrekker (Hoop). You bring the spirit and humbling weight of history to this worthy endeavor. Hoop spends a lot of time instructing in the mechanics of the trip so together this has been a real inspiration. Been slowly gathering kit for my own tripping into the Northern Boreal of eastern Manitoba. Keep up the great work! Where did you guys pick up your outer anoraks? And your pulks?

Of course this depends on the weather (hahaha) this will be a unsupported trip. 14:40...this is when the modern snowshoes earn their pay...the traditional shoes are great on the flats...thinking about getting some wood ones for flats...maybe carry the modern pair i have for backup....annnnd they don't break as easy.

    How do they keep their nose and faces from freezing? If I'm out snowshoeing for even an hour my face gets really cold. The balaclava makes things worse due to moisture.

    • @lureofthenorth
      @lureofthenorth  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Shaine MacDonald Hi Shaine, a hood with a fur ruff goes a long ways to keeping your face warm in windy conditions, and won't trap moisture the way a balaclava will. We make anoraks with fur ruffs, available here:
      lureofthenorth.com/shop/product-category/clothing/anoraks/
      Alternatively, if you need a face covering, a neck tube (like a "buff") is more versatile than a balaclava because it can be rotated as moisture builds up. I carry 2 or 3 to use during the day and dry them in the evening if needed.

      Hi Bryan, sorry that we haven't put too much up lately, the biggest reason probably being that we moved out into the bush 3 years ago and building a home, cutting wood, etc eats up all of our free time! We have lots of footage "in the archives" and hope to get back to more editing sometime!

      The facial hair is the best insulator. You don't feel the ice accumulation on the beard. Just a bit of weight but no freezing to the face.
