    Very informative! I’m working on getting my husband to build me a rack because my hobby has grown, so This helps get the ball rolling! Thank you!

    I grew up on a cattle ranch where the motto was "when in doubt get a hammer out" so definitely agree with you on the hammer.

    Thanks for showing the heat tape setup. I us a Exo Terra thermostat on my one rack works great and the price is great too. I got my heat tape from Pangea and they will wire it for you. GOD BLESS and keep showing some DYI projects now and then.

    Vice grips!!! I use vice grips to clamp down those connectors! Makes things easier in my opinion. 👍

    You can get specialist plastic clamp covers for the heat tape connectors here:
    flexwattheatape.com/collections/accessories-for-flexwatt-heat-tape
    I have used these in the past and they work perfectly, with a loud click when the upper and lower parts snap into place.

    If you have a tub that slides in very tightly will it damage the flexwatt tape by rubbing over it?

      @ravenwolf19501 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. They have a dip in the back for the flex tape.

    Where did you get the cord itself to attach? And how to make sure it’s the right size ? What kind of cord how much wattage is heat tape? What do I buy?

    Where can you get the cord with plug to connect the metal clips?

    Wouldn't the heat tape melt or soften the plastic tote the animal is in?

    • @Tigenraam
      @Tigenraam 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If it gets that hot you can bet the animal is already dead LOL

    • @korinworthington8928
      @korinworthington8928 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thermostat keeps the temps under control. Ours is set to like 92° so it's not hot enough to melt or warp the plastic of the tubs.

    Dont see the link to those clamps for the heat tape, am i missing something? What are they actually called?

    • @davidcallahan4367
      @davidcallahan4367 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can buy those flexwatt clamps, as well as an insulator set for the clamps from beanfarm.com for about $4 for a set of 2.

    Do I really need a small gap between the bottom of my snake bin and the heat tape? Or can I just lay my tub right on top of the tape?

    • @6strings735
      @6strings735 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you use tubs with lids, and you place heat tape on the shelf (I use wire racks), and you put the boxes on that. No rubbing. That is just fine. But a lidless rack where the tubs slide - yeah, you ideally want a gap, or else be very gentle sliding the boxes lol. Too much rubbing on the heat tape could in theory wear thru, though in reality probably not unless you throw sand in there.

      You can buy them at a hardware store, or even cut one off an unused appliance.

    Is it OK that the heat tape is upside down on half of the shelves?

    wouldn't a proportional thermostat be much better?

    • @6strings735
      @6strings735 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In general, for heat tape/pads, proportional is best. So yes. However, in a rack like this, temperature changes will be rather slow, so an ON/OFF thermostat will actually be OK. Plus snakes are good at managing temps, so the snake will adjust as needed.
      That said, I would replace any ON/OFF thermostat every few years. Those mechanical relays wear out. A proportional controller with a solid state relay on the other hand will last decades.

    As an educated electrician. I have to say that that heat tape design with exposed metal connectors and exposed leads running the length seems ridiculously unsafe. It's a shock or fire accident just waiting to happen.
    Is that full 110/240 volts? No transformer? I don't know about US laws but that setup would be straight up illegal in europe.

    Please forgive me but you do not know that that bulb was in fact 88f so you really dont know if the thermostat is in fact working.

    • @ReachOutReptiles
      @ReachOutReptiles  ปีที่แล้ว

      We only needed to know that the thermostat was working to turn the heat source on and off. We calibrate the heat tape in the rack with a temp gun later.
