Great video!! Thanks for sharing.. I''ve owned Am Akitas for a very long time. While each one is different and challenging, they are cool to own. I had an Akita protect his favorite Vet Tech from a mugging while we were out of town and he was boarded while on a nightly walk..... The Vet Tech was amazed!! The Tech bought an Akita puppy a month later... LOL...
When I was little I was raised around Akita and they called him Japanese Akitas or American Akitas the American Akitas are bigger than the Japanese Akita they are great dogs wonderful dogs we had 11 American Akitas they are the best dog I've ever had I love them so much I miss them all.
I'm enjoying the friendship of American Akita's for over 30 years now and had always 2 or 3 adult males living together and being best friends. And absolutely agree that a well socialized Akita isn't dog aggressive at all. My advice to people who want an American Akita (as second) dog: stay away from puppy mills, pet store's and those who are breeding for the money only. Because the pups are often traumatized and usually had no socialization what so ever. Resulting in behavior problems. And this a large powerful breed. How to recognize these bad breeders? They have more than 2 or 3 breeds available and usually puppies for sale the whole year round. The pups don't have an AKC or UKC pedigree. And they can't show you UKC or AKC certified documents as proof both parents have been checked for hereditary health issues. After purchasing a puppy, make time to go to a dog school but avoid puppy classes that allow pups to play with one another. This because a 9 week old Akita puppy usually is a lot stronger than (older) other breed puppies of the same size. And it's a natural thing for puppies to determine rank by play. Letting puppies at a dog school play freely will stimulate dominant behavior in your Akita pup. Also, older pups might start behaving aggressive towards the much younger Akita pup because, being older, they won't accept a lower rank. Which will result in a negative experience for the Akita pup. I always advice to take your pup to show training. Even if you don't plan to participate at shows. Because show training is besides learning to stand still and behave, all about socializing. At home: never leave it to the adult dog to tell the pup when he had enough. Keep an eye on the pup and if you notice that the adult dog is getting tired of playing with the new one, or just wants to be left alone for a while, you're the one who has to tell the pup to stop and leave his adult friend in peace. When giving them their food: always feed the adult dog first and teach the pup not the steel food from the adult dog or clean up left overs. (The first week(s) the pup will need 3 to 4 meals a day: make sure to give the adult dog a snack or a tiny bit of food first.) Same with treats: adult comes first, pup second. Going for a walk? Adult dog leash on first. Coming home after a walk? Adult leash off first. This way, your Akita pup will learn to respect the adult dog. American Akitas, like almost every other breed AND kids, will go trough a rebellion period when growing up. Most other breeds this starts around 12 months of age and lasts for a year, a year and a half. American Akitas however need a lot longer (5 years) to fully mature than most other breeds, physically and mentally, and thus might be starting to behave like pubers after 1.5 year and even 2 years and keep doing it up to 2 years long. During that period, correct unwanted rebellious behavior immediately but without overdoing it. A NO! is a NO! and will remain a NO!. Meaning, be consequent. And if that doesn't work, my experience is that there's no harder punishment for an Akita than ignoring him and walking away if they ask for a cuddle or try to make up 😉They're intelligent dogs and do know by your behavior that they've disappointed you. And most of them will see that as punishment. For example: I had a male who's ultimate punishment for unnecessary barking when outside, was having to come indoors for a while. When I finally let him out again so he could go to his favorite spot at the gate again... he'd be as quit as a mouse the rest of the day 🙃 And to end this lengthily explanation: the nibbling at the Golden's head in the video: that's not play. That's a dogs way to show the other dog he likes/loves him or her. Mimic it with the tips of your fingers on your dog and you will have a very very happy furry friend.
After getting an Akita it's hard imagining owning any other breed now. Mine demands I carry her onto the bed to snuggle up when it's bed time. Your pup seems to be well taken care of and loved, keep it up!
@@DudeitsDavidhe is so cute! I hope he overcomes his anxiety about swimming because I’d love for you guys to do a swimming video with Maui but I heard that Akitas and American Akitas don’t like swimming, they do love the cold and snow but not swimming so I hope he overcomes his anxiety
We got a male American akita last year. He actually just turned one and was raised with our 7 year old bernese mountain dog (female) and 1 year old male cat. Asserted proper co habitation training from the start and He a gem. To the point if our bener decides not to eat her meal when fed, he will not eat her food. Playful with her but you need to step in from time to time as our Berner is getting old and just can go at that pace for long. As for the cat he treats him like something he must protect. He can be laying down in the yard and our akita comes over lays down beside him and just goes on watch. The cat moves 10ft, Odin move with him. Again you still need to be cautious about a 100lbs dog and a 10lbs cat interaction friendly or not, he 10x his size and is playful. Great with my brothers dog. Absolutely unbelievable with our 3 kids who are all under 5. To boot he's a great guard dog as shown in the video. I was even able to train him to stay on property without a leash, without using a shock collar (I do live in a rural area, probably not recommended for someone living in a populated area). Great dog Absolutely zero complaints, great addition to our family
If socialised well and raised with other pets they can be good, my girl lives cats and also my son lives with us now and he has a female shepard and they are great together being 2 females , shes also a social butterfly up for pats from people when we are out, but her sister who my daughter has is not great with strangers or other dogs
It still has to do with the home and the owners. Dogs are just like people. When they're comfortable they perform better. Regardless of who is around. that's a fact
I love Akitas. I had a pair of brothers that were 1/2 Akita. The mother was purebred who got out of their backyard and mated with a Newfoundland. Those boys were beautiful and weighed in at 130 lbs. Duke took after the Akita and JD took after the Newfoundland.
My former neighbor had an Akita, who pretended to be such a big fierce monster, but scratch him behind the ear & he'd turn into a quivering lump of jelly. They are really like very large Norwegian Elkhounds.
Rescued my Akita 2 yrs ago, he had been raised in a car never socialized etc, he’s the best dog I’ve ever had now
Love the video, David! Glad to find someone who loves the Akita as much as I do.
He's a good boy and an exceptionally good looking Akita, many great years with him ✌🏽♥️

Does Akita do well off leash in public?

I thought Akia should be the only dog at home, since they don't get along with other dogs..it is good to see your Akita is nice to other dog..
Some will get along with other pets as long as raised together from young age.
Same gender can be an issue
