    Too many people want an instant garden which if you have a lot of money, can be done, but a beautiful garden takes time to build from the soil up. Enjoy the process!

    On arborists, I look for ISA certification-but you have to be careful. Often it means the top guy has, or had, certification from the International Society of Arboriculture, but that doesn't necessarily filter down to the workers. In some cases it does, and that's who to hire. Best of all probably is an experienced ISA arborist who is still doing the work himself or herself.

    • @sherriianiro747
      @sherriianiro747 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. Most of the time it's only the owner of the company that is certified or they tell you they just need to take the exam! Certified arborists are more expensive but you get what you pay for.

  • @sherriianiro747
    @sherriianiro747 ปีที่แล้ว

    I understand the point about arborists, but the bottom line is a certified arborist has to pass their exam score no less than 76%.
    They also can assess the health of a tree and see the difference between projected risk and actual risk, nor will they top off a tree or make it look like a lollipop after pruning. They also carry appropriate insurance too.

    So, I’ve already asked one question! But I’ll take my chances…I have a Kousa Dogwood that has not thrived. Sent away tissue for testing and it came back as having two diseases, Colletotrichum species (most likely C. acutatum) and Botryosphaeria species (most likely B. dothidea). The second is most likely a result of the first which is probably a result of stress on the tree. I suspect the area is to wet-clay soil and all. So, provided I determine and correct the stress which caused the disease, what small tree can I plant there? Can I go back with another Kousa Dogwood or is that bound for failure?

    I have a hydrangea, I believe it is Fire Island, the tag was damaged, that has not flowered. It was a small plant that had a few blooms when I bought it the summer of 2021.
    From what I have found it blooms on new growth. It gets the sun in the afternoon. The plant is still quite small, should I do a small amount of pruning to stimulate it this year? This will be the second full summer for it, in the ground. Also, should hydrangeas be fertilized each year? I use organic fertilizer in my garden.

    I bought a property 2 years ago home and yard on a lil 1/4 acre (Sacramento Area 9b), just started focusing on the landscaping last fall. While planting a maple in the back yard we discovered hard pan after 6", the soil was completely dry even though we had a week of rain just before. I had 10 yards of compost delivered and spread that about 4" deep over the areas I am planning to have my garden beds then used a 3" auger about every 9"-12" and went about a foot deep. Raked to incorporate the soil with the compost and level. Then had another 10yds delivered, went back in with 3-4" of compost to mulch. Pathways and other areas have walk on mulch. Now I'm starting to plant and finding so many fat earthworms, it makes me think I did the right thing. Should I wait a year before sending a soil sample in? Should I let this settle for the year so the suggestions are more beneficial for the long run? Thanks Jim!

      Hey! I would go to Redwood Barn Nursery in Davis. The horticulturist there, Don Shor, would be able to help you. He's been gardening in the valley since the 80s and got his training at UC Davis. Were I you, I would send a soil sample of the native soil first so you know what your deeper rooted plants are tapping into when they root past the improved soil. A soil test really only is necessary every few years on say a 3-5 year interval just so you know how conditions are changing in your yard. If you do go, tell him Ashdale sent you! :) best of luck!

    Question: I've had carboard down on my garden beds with a layer of mulch on it only ever since last fall and only added soil recently. The cardboard is still intact, its definitely weathered but I feel like when I go to plant in it, it might not be broken down enough for roots to make their way through. In N. Florida, nurseries sell awabuki viburnum, which have very large, round-ish glossy leaves. These shrubs perform terribly and every year go thru a hard leaf drop after turning bright red. Some businesses call them "chindo". Online they look like different plants as the chindo looks more like a slender pointed (Coppertop-ish) shape.
    Is the chindo an different or improved version of awabuki?

    I have a row of abelia and some spirea in front of my house. Over the winter they accumulate oak leaves IN the base. Do I need to clean that out? For now they're small enough I can and do but in a couple years I may not be able to get my hand in. Can the leave stay (even though they're super slow to decompose) or should I limb up the bottoms a bit to leave them more accessible? Thanks for all your hard work!!

    I have azaleas in my landscape that were planted before I moved in. Is there any way to find our what variety I have? There are so many on the market it seems impossible to know.
