LaVell was innovative in a lot of ways. One example, he was the first college coach to hire a specific special teams coach. His first special teams coach sent out his resume to every school in the nation, explaining why he should be hired as a special teams coach exclusively, and LaVell was the only guy to give him a call.
LaVell would meet 1-on-1 with the players regularly. He didn't do a lot of individual coaching on the field. Instead, he coached his players in life. His ex-players love him fiercely.
Loved hearing your perspective! Grown up in Utah between BYU and Utah and have seen a ton of Lavell Edwards and BYU football. Really enjoyed hearing your passion for learning the history of the passing game!
The other genius thing LaVell was able to do was attract incredible coaches. He had 23(!) players/coaches be head coaches in the NFL or college. That doesn't even count Mike Leach, BYU student, who took LaVell's concepts to the next level. Mike Holmgren Brian Billick Andy Reid Kalani Sitake Norm Chow Etc, etc. LaVell didn't have to dominate the room. He got his staff pulling in the same direction, and then he supported them and let them help make the program better. LaVell was an amazing coach, but those who knew him talk about what an amazing guy he was.

Love the history of the game and I have a ton of admiration for LaVell Edwards!
Really enjoyed this. I remember listening to Norm Chow in 1985 at clinics. I also heard Coach Edwards at another clinic.
I wish we had footage of those clinics!

I appreciate so much of your work. Deep dives into scheme/concepts as well as deep dives into the art and heart of coaching. Thanks so much coach!
Thanks Kyle! Planning on doing a lot more like this!
