I disagree with that assessment at the end during Ichigos Fight with Ywach. She didn't snap Ichigo out of anything. She even remarks how he was okay and just after Ichigo reveals why he was attacking so recklessly. That face Ichigo makes is one of someone who is wondering why they were interrupted. Like "Yes, what is it Orihime?"

Im Probably Most Impressed with HOW Well this Went WITHOUT Even NEEDING tto Go out of your Way To Point Out "She May Not Fight BUT AT BARE MINIMUM She Still SUCCEEDS and does Her Job Better than Sakura Would where It KINDA Felt like There were Moments where She SUCCEEDED in doing things She Probably Just NEEDED to be Written to Be MORE POWERFUL NOW cause Kakashi is Using WAY More than He Theoretically is Physically CAPABLE of doing SO She HAS to Be At Least as Good as Tsunade without Even Getting PUSHED By Madara Because of the Pressure of the 2 six Paths Brothers Reincarnations or whatever... but Man I dont Even mean to Frame Sakura THAT POSITIVELY hahaha Now Ill get shot Before Someone Whines about the last 2-5 message Long Essays of random stuff about 3 different Mangas and How I Hate the Internazi World Govt for That WHOLE Poisoning the World with Bioweaponised Viruses Thing from past 2 years CAUSE That Whole thing For the Internazi World Govt where everyones Vaxed so that Most women lose the ability to birth children and so on... But WHATEVER... Who am I To Complain about things that Probably arent even seen because of the words contained within... I Should Just feel lucky they arent illegally blocking me MORE for whining about the World Govt Genocidin' People again... Cause I Think it SUCKS..... F*** All those wankers....
But Definitely Who Doesnt like that Instead of FORCING there being a Girl that Heals that ALSO can Push the Protagonist around, instead they gave us this Orange Combo that Fits Almost as well As Naruto Fits Kurama, which ALREADY Makes me wanna Cry about them killing Kurama but HEY theyre Also Killing all our friends and family RIGHT NOW so I Guess I need to Save my tears, But Man Kurama is WAY Better at being Naruto's SHADOW PARENT than ANYONE ELSE Ever was.... Even if He Only Started Liking him after 15 years.... To DIE so that Your Friend CAN Continure Protecting the Village and So on WAS Pretty interesting... So I Guess He'll Have to Learn Jiraiya Mode and Maybe Some Tsunade stuff Where It seems Like Making Chakra Backup Seals On yoursellf that I guess I can waiit to see wwhether they teach sarada to Make Multiple Byakugou Seals where Maybe one for Each Eye so that She Can USE Sharingan without Going EMPTY Immediately as soon as she used 2 Chidoris.... which Is DEF a Level Where She COULD Take out a Few Zetsus before Being Murdered by a Woodstyle Move Probably.... Even though I think itd Be more interesting if they Leave Mitsuki to Snakes and Swap the Frog and Slug Summoning Stuff.... MAYBE or Maybe the BOTH Train Both Styles of Senjutsu to see something more interesting More Similar to Hashirama's Unusual Senjutsu.... But Enough about Boruto where Its At Least Interesting Now But I Wonder How Different it Wouldve been without Kishimoto Coming In outta Nowhere and Replacing folks... but whatever Point was I PREFER the Idea of Getting BOTH Orihime AND Rukia in a story INSTEAD of One Sakura..... CAN ALL ADMIT That Rukia and Orihime ALWAYS BEATS Sakura EVEN With the Dumb Invincibility Seal Powers or whatever! In EVERY POSSIBLE CONCIEVABLE WAY!

What gives her a badass edge is her willingness to jump into conflict as a healer, then there's her saving Harribel and her Fraccion while ignoring Shinigami protests and even getting between the seriously wounded Appaci and Renji as he got ready to strike. They don't care. These people only look at the surface. They only see that "she's nice" and "doesn't fight in a shounen story", which to them means that she's useless. "Rukia's the FMC, so Ichigo should pick her, not Orihime. She actually fights unlike her (completely ignoring the fact that Rukia Also Needed to be saved)." With this kind of mentality, is it a wonder why trashy anime is all the rage now?
We live in a time where being "nice" is perceived as being "weak". and the only way to show that you're not is to fight someone; give them a good show, cause apparently that's the only reason they watch/read this stuff; not for the story, but for the random, nonsensical violence.

The support. Anyone who has played any form of rpg will know that no team is ever truly complete without a support unit. They're the ones who keep the team going even when they're at the lowest points in a battle. Support units aren't *made* for kicking ass and taking names. They're made to be protected while they keep everyone else going and even empowering them. While Orihime doesn't have the ability to *physically* empower her allies, her presence, words and will make them feel stronger. Makes them feel like they can keep going even on the brink of death. She's the adrenaline rush. She's the healer. She's the white mage.

I've waited for this for so long! Orihime is the emotional core of Ichigo and the man went into depression by the fear of losing her to the Arrancars. She remained strong even when faced with the strongest people she ever saw, and she always stood by Ichigo's side, as the strong shield of compassion she is. I understand people who not like this kind of character, but useless and weak are two things she's not, specially cause a lof of the cast would be dead without her and Ichigo would be still deep in depression without her. Yes, she's not a fighter, she's not like Rukia who becomes Captain by the end, but she has a good character for what she is! Going back to her talk with Matsumoto, Orihime always wanted to be able to stand beside and support the man and people she loves and she did that! She endured a lot of things and managed to still be a pure person, and a reliable one. Maybe, we could have had a little more of her, like, a lot of characters suffer from hard to notice development, but it doesn't take out the value of who she is and her role in the story. Without Orihime our boy Ichigo would be drowned in depression for the rest of his life, if not dead

Take Dragonball for example, people mistake alot of the characters for useless and ignore that they are still willingly to get involved in conflict even when it is WELL beyond them. (I'll just copy my comment from another video from this point).
    Quick trivia:
一護, is the way Ichigo's name is written and 護 means protect or defend. So when he promises to Orihime that next time he will protect her he says it like this 次は絶対オマエを護るから wich translates to "Next time I will definitely protect you", the kicker here is that Kubo wrote the Kanji that is in Ichigo's name, and this is the only time that this ever happened, in other uses Ichigo uses other Kanji for protection but not the one on his name.
It's like if Ichigo is putting his name, his being of a protector on the line. It is subtle, but Kubo's making the promise he made to Orihime become a pretty big deal, it's beyond any other character interaction with Ichigo and it fits the theme of Ichigo losing his humanity this arc, thus having to save one of the characters that truly anchors his humanity along with maybe his family, being Orihime.

For someone who is in the arrancar arc right now, I’ll say this. Orihime is a godsent. She such a funny and enjoyable character on the surface but she always put hersel behind-on everyone else. I truly do think she’s wacky but also sweet character and her like little confession to ichigo feels so sweet and natural. Like she would rather give up herself if it made another person happy. Also considering her overall importance to the plot calling her useless is a bit much. Not every female character who likes a boy and who doesn’t immediately fight is Sakura.

  • @FlameSkull95

Honestly, this analysis did her character so much justice, that all we have to do is look at the big picture, instead of labelling her based on a single attribute of which is tossed around with so much misunderstanding.
It also points out how they bolster each other's desires to protect someone, one through means of offense, and the other through means of defense, shielding and most importantly, like it was mentioned, rejection.
Now only if someone could do a similar job in regards to certain female characters named after cherry blossoms huh...

I just had a thought... The Princess and Knight stories could become popular again if they made princesses like Orihime. Some say someone who only soaks up affection from others is ‘weak’, that their lack of desire to protect using strength is worthless.
But there is worth beyond oneself. Even if the affection given doesn’t belong to you, the fact that it exists at all is a connection. The fact that it exists means that there is an opportunity for both of them to grow.
Ulqioura had no heart, but his feelings were within those around him. He had no feelings, yet it was the pain of Ichigo and Orihime felt that changed his once empty heart. It may not have been the best change, but it was different from eternal stagnation.
The princess doesn’t have a sword. That’s because she doesn’t need a sword. She may be weak, but because she is there, the Knight can be strong. He has something to protect...

I’m only two minutes in but I can tell this video is for people like me. Orihime is criminally underrated and essential to Ichigo’s development and I wish she had been given further development herself. Particularly the mystery of her parents and her brother and how her pendants are different than fullbring and may very well be something unknown to all yet familiar to characters like aizen and other kido adepts. I have a theory she has a connection to witchcraft that resembles kido.

God damn, what a fantastic video.
The other day i was looking for videos about Orihime and save 1 or 2, they were largely negative or nonexistent. I always knew that Orihime was probably the most misunderstood character in Bleach and it always killed me when people would call her "useless" or "pathetic" or just harp on about the things they hated about her because i knew that fundamentally, those "criticisms" came from a place of misunderstanding and misinterpretation. So many people want Orihime to be a DPS when she's the off-tank/healer.
Wat, this is by far the most in-depth and well-researched analysis of her and the story Kubo was trying to tell with her that i've seen and probably ever will see. You never cease to impress me with your understanding of Bleach's themes and the amount of research you put into each and every one of your analysis videos. I occasionally go back and re-watch "I'll Never Stop Loving Bleach" just to re-experience it. I think this is another one i'll add to the list of re-visits.

She is so important, she is an omega..a mage, support/healer, and her power to reject any events, thats really like she has a goddess power, it compasses time and space....no doubt why Aizen really wanted to get Orihime on his team, he was amazed by Orihime's Omega powers, that she can even restore the damage in the Hogyoku crystal ball.. thats why Aizen even became powerful...

But it's not wrong to have a girly bubbly friend like Orihime.
And power isn't only about fighting tho, having a big heart to think about other's safety and feelings is not an easy thing to do.. especially in a tough time when the first thing she should do is to think about her own safety.

This is because strength of the heart is extremely obscure. People are more accustomed to seeing physical strength or a strong personality. But when it comes to mental and emotional strength, it is often overlookes and any character that represent this will be seen as weak. For the most famous example; Cinderella.
She is often said to be weak and the type of a character that baffle modern women for her fame. But Cinderella is a character that define the strength of the weak. Created in a era of oppression, her silent strength in heart and mental as well as moral gives those oppressed strength and hope.
It isn't Prince Charming that is the hero of this story. Ultimately, the marriage with the Prince is a present for Cinderella for enduring the hardship.
Now some idiot is going to yap and question the connection between a Disney Princess and this excellent video. I say, Orihime is strong in the face of oppression. Her heart is unshaken by the enemies and her faith stayed strong despite all attempts to break her. She is not physically strong, obviously, but her smile is enough to give her friends the resolve to keep it that way. Orihime as a character brings hope, enough to give a heart to one without.
As a character that represent the strength of the heart in a story where the heart is something that need and can be proven through powerful conflicts, it is easy to overlook her silent support.
This is what we call emotional support, a pillar to rest against after a long day, one that provides comfort without words, one that will be there after the loud arguments and conflict end to help settle the dust. The kind that you just want to come home to. A silent understanding.
Basically, you will be a total jerk to dump any such person because they are not exciting enough...

I feel with Orihime's character in terms of her power, it was also her choice how she wants her power to be. Her power is so much of everything, offensive, space-time, defensive, etc but she chooses to use it as a healing and defensive functionality. It takes a LOT of courage to choose only one from a list of powerful abilities. I think what upset a lot of fans was that she did not pick an offensive side of her power over the defensive side of it and there is thing weird thing that people have issues with femininity that is regarded as stupid and they made defensive and healing is part of that along with romance and they most dismissed her character out of it. Which is bizzare.

I'm so glad I stumbled on this video. For the record, I never hated Orihime nor did I think she was useless. Not every female character has to be a badass one-woman army warrior type to be a strong and good character-what makes them strong and good is being interesting and growing/developing. There are more many ways to be "strong" beyond physical strength alone. Orihime's strength is mental and emotional-not only to heal physical wounds, but to help heal the mental and emotional ones (or at least want to). Nor do I mind them being a romantic interest for the shounen protagonist, as long as they get an arc or two of their own separate from being a good support/love for said protagonist. I also liked that, even though she was jealous of the bond between Rukia and Ichigo, instead of making her petty/vindictive about it and trying to come between them, she considered Rukia a dear friend.
    Thank you for making this.

Amazing video as always Wat. I’m so glad you finally got the video done and it’s great to see someone finally give Orihime her prober due since she is a great character that is unfortunately misunderstood by a lot of people. Also I loved you use of Missing You from KH during The Heart scene that was brilliant.

Awe... I honestly wasn't really that focus on shipping when it came to bleach, unless I felt like it, but in TYBW arc when Ichigo and Orihime went to the end to fight. It was amazing to me. Especially the end when they hooked up. I was surprised by Rukia and Renji but they had a past and Renji followed Rukia, to the point he became the Vice-Captain under Byakuya, her older brother. Clearly, he wants big brothers approval lol

Orihime is my favorite character tbh. Might be because I relate to her quirky and sensitive personality. Quietness is a sign of strength, you don't need to be loud about it all the time to show it.

Orihime was always my favorite character...unfortunately I was always made fun of in a way because people always told me she was useless and weak, but I always saw a lot of myself in Orihime.

16:11 One of my favorite scenes in Bleach. So emotional. I craved more of that in the series. The next emotional moment that can compare to this is Rukia fighting against the fake Kaien-dono (the Espada Aaroniero). And the next would be Ulquiorra's connection to Orihime and his defeat.

Thank you for this video, when I was young I was obsessed with bleach and this included Orihime. She was my favorite character and I fell out of the fandom because everyone went WILD on Orihime and said the most cruel sexist shit I’ve ever heard just because she wasn’t a fighter on the offense. It put a gross taste in my mouth as a young girl for obvious reasons. I recently went back to bleach to finish and I stand by how I felt all those years ago. Orihime is IMPORTANT and a adds a lot to Bleach’s emotional impact !

I had tears, TEARS I TELL YOU running down my face while I watched this video of my home girl Hime Chan ❤❤❤
    Big ole fat tears...🤧
Seriously I was like Ulquiorra with my face rivers streaming down my face but I'm know I didn't look as cool...
Oh man oh my, I have been waiting soo long for someone to come along and give Orihime Inoue some justice and address all of her brilliance to shed light on the recognition and importance of her character that is looong overdue. You my friend blew any expectations I would ever have on the matter completely outta the water!
    Thank you..!
Just.....thank you sir for this beautifully done character analysis of my favorite female protagonist in Anime since I was first introduced to her back in 2006.
Orihime to me has always been the embodiment of hope and love and truly is the heart of this story and it always sadden me to know how ugly shippers can be and directed so much hate towards my angel.
I always knew in my heart that Ichigo and Orihime was in fact end game but for Tite Kubo to stand his ground and make it cannon...??? Knowing how overwhelming the popularity that Ichigo x Rukia had on the community...was floating on a cloud for a week when I got the news ❤
You flawlessly pointed out all of their implied connections even as very beginning in the story and your comment about how Orihime is the shield and Ichigo is the knight?? Amazing!
I knew of course the literal sense of that but how you mentioned that he never relied upon any one else expressed upon himself before UNTIL Orihime in the final battle and only then not only could Ichigo but ALSO Orihime could overcome...🤯
Just ridiculous that I never thought about it like that before lol.
Only when they completely trusted in each other and were confident in their abilities to rely on each other...they were successful and everything came around full circle...wow.
You got me looking at this all through a new perspective now.
The growth in them is obvious of course but the depth of that growth through your perspective makes me love the shit outta the ending even more.
Your video was a treat man and I'm sure this is just the first time I will view this!
Again THANK YOU soooo much for making this...I'm brand new to your content and happened to see the thumbnail and my heart leaped when I saw potential for a kind Orihime video instead of the usual hate parade she receives 🤦‍♀️
Seriously, thank you. You just earned yourself a new Subscriber 😊
Ps. Your pronunciation is on point man and your vid are very very well edited 👌🏻

You know what's weird? There was a time when I really didn't like Orihime for most of the same reasons as Sakura. Then I saw a picture of her, it was after Ulquiorra blew a hole through Ichigo and she was kneeling next to him freaked out and I had some sort of epiphany that she wasn't nearly as bad as I thought she was and I began to genuinely like her. I grew more accepting of her and characters like her, I also began to accept ichihime as much as I didn't want to.

I am an ichihime but i am not biased enough to say ichigo was being romantic (romantic is a strong word to use here) to anyone for that matter (during the run of the series) because he had more internalized emotional issues to work out + rangiku actually told orihime that he's a silly boy that doesn't understand romantic love yet.
I just felt theres more stuffs ichigo exclusively does for orihime like offering to walk her home, telling shinji to apologize to her, exclusively made a vow to protect her, bothered when shes scared of his mask, felt at peace once she encouraged him to actually care for himself and not to put the burden all to himself, coming from the dead hearing her calling for him, gives gentle look to her, putting down their walls and got familiar to each other in fullbring arc, to the point that both of them can finally stand side by side as equals and accepting each other's help during yhwach's fight as oppose to hueco mundo arc where they were at their lowest point stepping on each other to protect each other. In the final arc Ichigo was finally able to depend on others without burdening everything by himself while orihime can finally reject her role of being protected and ichigo trusts her enough to protect him. They are depending on each other and battling together in a synchronized way. This is pivotal to their characters individually as well.
Was all those romantic? At least for me not really, maybe something gradually leading to that. But they have established their dynamic as the sword (ichigo) and the shield (orihime). Thats their kind of dynamic. It also works with the analogy of the sword and the sheath like in rurouni kenshin. Orihime is a great foil to ichigo's personality, balances each other out and it just makes more sense for them to end up together romantically. It really doesn't help when the anime changed numerous small stuffs that ends up changing a huge context as whole, and this applies to ichigo as well not just orihime. Other than that emphasizing or adding ichiruki scenes that wasnt even there in the first place/exaggerate existing scenes to make it seem like its sentimental/romantic while it could also be different and more nuanced in context. I blame this entirely on the studio itself rather than the audience though.
Again, there's nothing wrong preferring one to the other but we have to acknowledge both ichiruki and ichihime plays out different dynamics where ichiruki is more of "push past pain-cheer up, man up, be strong" and ichihime is more to "addressing those pain-let yourself be vulnerable" hence it felt more personal. I just dislike it when people say ichihime had no chemistry/dynamics at all. This is just my opinion btw .

Ichigo and Orihime, the two aspect of bleach.
Cool and moving in one hand.
Warm and goofy in the other.
Yet both connected with a deeper bittersweetness.
That's why i love Bleach. Always in my heart.

I just want to say, thank you so much for this video. I now look at that scene of Ichigo's transformation in a complete new way. This is an amazing video. Keep it up.
Edit: Can we spare a few mins talking about the idea that Orihime's fear isn't because she sees Ichigo as a monster but rather because she realizes that the very reason why he turned into one is mainly because of herself ? I hope I didn't get this point wrong but I still like it a 100 times better than the "Oh no! my loved one turns into a monster!" thing.

Yes. i always consider the way that she maybe got into a "trauma" (or something similar) because of her brother when he was a hollow. So i think when she saw ichigo in that form she got scared cause she though it was a similar case. It's not wrong being scared of something, just a human mistake but some people just take that as a excuse to talk sht about her.

*cri and clap* Thank you for this~ i love orihime as a character. I never felt she was a damsel in distress when i first watch bleach 9 years ago. I was too young(preteen) to understand what most of what going on but I understood that orihime never once was a problem in my eyes in the series. And i feel like people painting this character as useless and not well fit to be ichigo side and something she is not is the fandom at fault who fail to see her for what she really is.
20:19 is my favorite part when it came to her in the anime. you can feel the pain within her words that to assure to ichigo doesn't need to prove to her, his worth as her protector or always feel like he disappointing her but the last thing she want for him and the person she love to not get hurt anymore for her sake.
