I grew up having thin socks tide around my head before every Sunday morning. The sock curl always made my hair look great. It was a different method and a different time, but my maw maw knew what was up.
I think the reason why you’re not seeing great results with the sock method is there’s another way of doing it-wrap the hair tightly around the sock so no fabric is peeking through between the strands. Instead of rolling the ends upward to cover the hair, twist the sock into a bun close to your head then pull the end of the sock to form a covered bun. The curls are tighter and if you’re a side sleeper like me, you can do this method by creating buns that run down the middle top of crown to the bottom so you won’t feel them as you sleep
I have an OCTO curl that I haven’t used for about five years. I think my hair was too short at the time even though I was excited about using it but now my hair is long enough so I’m going to give it a try. Thanks for the reminder and the inspiration.
The curling rod works perfectly for me. I spray my hair with sea-salt-spray beforehand and after I’m done with curling and curl every single strand of hair around it. Like I don’t add more strands as I go I just curl one strand til it’s done, and then curl the next strand of hair around the same curling rod. I have very heavy and thick hair and curls (even curling irons) normally last like 3 hours max. Curls with the curling rod stay pretty the whole day
Abbey. I'm 73 with one length to mid rear. I've been using the heatless curl for a while now. My method doesn't use any tool. I simply zig zag part two sections which I twist. Slightly damp hair with leave in 'It's A 10' product. It controls the frizz and gives soft waves. Thanks for the vid. I may try the sock method as I have a new package of very thin stretchy socks. Any of the methods you showed can be fine depending on the style, you're going for.🙂
Literally tried robe curls for the first time the night before you uploaded this! Ready to up my game already 😎 You give the absolute best advice Abbey! You help me feel like my best self 💕💕
You need to try the flower curler with the four rings, I've been using it for years! the flower curler is my absolute favorite heatless curler and I own/love the octocurler too. Also I love videos like these that compare multiple methods and rank which ones are best and why, super informative ☺️

(you cut off let's say a ring piece from the leg of 4 - 5 inches. The initial stretch widens the ring - that causes the open edges (from cutting it, regular scissor, sharp is better) to roll in. The ring will get wider and the 4 - 5 inches will shrink. Then you can use them. Taking 2 or 3 of them for more thickness. Winter panty hoses (microfibre) will be better for the purpose, thicker material. I have tried cutting off those rings from cotton polyester mix - but there is some fraying, shedding. So it is better to stick with the polyester stuff. Try out when you cut off the first piece, it depends on the material too how much it shrinks. Once can easily wash those things (put them in a net so they will not get lost). The raw edges will not deteriorate. Rings from panthoseses that are only 1 inch wide and then stretched (they are long) can replace rubber bands (real rubber often disintegrates and it becomes a sticky mess, I had that within the crafts supplies - and not all of them were in clear plastic bags so the mess outside a bag stuck to some yarns). I also use them in the garden for plants - still looking for green pantyhose for sale somewhere ;) Or white ones that I could dye and then cut up.
Man, this makes me really miss my longer hair - it looks so nice!! I completed my goal to donate my hair 3x in my lifetime and I'm contemplating doing it again - so I 'may' be able to try one of these techniques! In any event, your hair is beautiful no matter if it's sleek & straight or wavy/curly. Personally, I'd go for the curls every single time... Another great video!!
I got super excited seeing this video on my feed! I really feel like my heatless style prayers have been answered! Thank you so much for being super informative and showing us all the variations of styling!! I tried the robe style curls right after watching one of your recent vids raving about them and the curls turned out so good! Super satisfied you accepted this request!!
Does anyone have a technique that doesn't just flatten the top? I work so hard to build volume with my ultra fine hair and when I try heatless curls, the bottom looks frizzy and the top just gets smooshed to my head 🫤
I liked all the techniques mentioned. I would first try what I have at home like socks, leggings, robe ties. Then I might try the other ones. I have tried the satin material and finds it absorbs water in the hair and is gentle on the hair. I like the amount of curlers included in the octocurl, the snappable headband, and the elastics for securing the hair. I have tried other curlers that had 6 or less and no headband. The octocurl is good value for the price.
i use the second one and have very much defined curls with it. you’re supposed to take thin pieces when curling. not huge pieces. though i do have medium to thick hair.
I wish that someone would do a video on how to get looser or larger curls. My hair is naturally curly, but not very hard to straighten. However it dries, it will stay that way and in this scenario, it holds a curl too well. I always end up looking like Shirley Temple! I've tried to wet my hair less, but I have to dampen it a little because dry hair doesn't curl at all. I've tried thicker curling rods or doubling them up and that helps a little. I also tried brushing out the curls and the frizz is it creates is unsalvageable! Lol. If anyone that happens to read this has any tips, please let me know. I've been going through nothing but trial & error for the last year! ❤
Hi Abbey ! I purchase a curling rod from a company caller heatless hair which is 100% silk and it is actually really comfortable to sleep in !! You should look into it
I have naturally wavy/curly hair and I have been wanting to try some new ways to style my hair and avoid damage. Sometimes I would like a more organized curl in my hair. I can usually achieve that with lots of water and products. I may be trying the legging method sometime soon! Thank you for this video. I am definitely interested in purchasing the octocurl too!
Depending on your hair type it might end up very frizzy. I have wavy curly 2c/3a hair and it took forever to dry and was frizzy when I took it out. The "no heat blow out" using a T-shirt worked better tbh.
I tried sock curls and they were really uncomfortable and fell out of my hair. I'll have to try some of yours. I need a system that is good for rough sleepers and comfortable to sleep on. I don't understand how people sleep with heatless curls lol.
Heatless curls have changed the game for me! I use leggings and I get such beautiful and defined curls that last all day plus it saves me so much time in the morning! Never wanna go back to using a curling iron
I recently bought this heatless curl set at Primark for like 3€ and it has some sort of styrofoam in it to give it that curling wand shape and a satin cover plus two satin scrunchies. I also use the crisscross method you described in this video and I add quite small sections at a time starting quite high up and it gives me the most perfect curls ever! Better than I could achieve with a curling iron (mainly I’m just not talented with those). I of course always put hydration and leave in conditioner spray into my hair to dampen it before I wrap it so it holds the curl better. i wish I could attach a picture of my curls here haha. The only downside of it is that it really is not the most comfortable thing to sleep in. But in the morning when I see my curls it’s definitely worth it!
Ahhh this is so gorgeous Abbey!! I've been thinking of this for awhile now but have you ever thought about getting a qualification in hair? You know so much about it, even going into the fine science of it, and i feel you need a certificate 🤩🙌
I have a large silk scarf that I have been in the same way as the "robe curl" method. My hair is pretty long and I love that the ends are long and I can tie it up so my hair isn't all over me while I'm sleeping. I considered purchasing one of those cushy curl Roda but worried that it wouldn't be comfortable. I think I might just have to get the Octocurl!
Wow! Thank you so much for all this info. This is great. I’ve been using a thin robe tie. It took a bit of a learning curve, but I do like the results. BTW, love the lipstick/gloss combo. Thanks, Abbey!
Abby, I love your videos. I normally don’t comment on these, but have you tried a sponge roller or rod? Before I was a natural curly girl I used sponge rollers to curly my hair. Tried them out, you might like the effect.
I use silk legging on day one & for the rest of wk use Giant silk scrunchies on top of head w ends spiralled into it. Mon hair is super curly which I like, wk ends w a bouncy blow out style. LOVE. Hair is so soft
yay! been wanting to try the heatless curl for a while now...not done watching the video but do you use any products to keep the curl in place? thanks!
Definitely going to try the octocurl now! For future videos, I would love to see you try some subscription boxes and review the products/ingredients in them! I just started my subscription to allure beauty box and found myself wishing I had your input on the products!
I would just like to know which product you recommend to hold these curls In place? Particularly something that wont leave the hair looking terrible In the following days until washday? An option for those of us who dont blowdry.
I cannot do heatless curls with wet or even just damp hair because it just does not dry unless I apply heat. Maybe that is because I have very fine hair and live in the subtropics with 80-90% humidity???
Thank you for the extra tips on the octocurl Abby ! I have never seen the "section off crown" method and this really really works for me. I LOVE the extra volume for my shoulder length medium texture hair. I can only use one strip at a time but I used your "sandwich method" on my ends by folding over and tying it off since my hair doesn't go all the way to the end of the strip. I do however have a generic octocurl and I do not like the thicker headband portion since I sleep in mine - just a heads up for anyone in the market wink wink .
Thanks for this Abbey - I realize it is a little old, but it just popped up on my home page. I was wondering if with the Octocurl, you could do a braid method, since there are two pieces of the Octocurl per piece of hair?
I've been trying out the robe tie method. Pretty easy with the method you showed but trying to figure it out because 1/2 my head has a great curl and the other side looks more crimpy so, going to keep trying to get it right lol.
I cut my long hair in 2020 and is been 2 years and my hair still short. Now all I want is my hair long so I can do all this fun stuff. Maybe in another 3 more years I can try this methods.
I wanted to love the Octocurl but after 3 attempts I gave up - my hair is coarse and my ends will not stay curled around the Octocurl. I get frizzy wonky ends no matter what I do. Open to any suggestions, it wasn’t cheap I’d like to find a way to salvage it. My tried and true heatless method is one Dutch braid with a paranda made from bamboo yarn (super silky!) to extend my length so I can braid past my ends. No wonky ends! I love it, but I’d like the Octocurl to work so I can have some variety.
Hi, I was wondering if you could review the Lus Elixir oil and the Bounce Curl Light oil. Even if its just reading the ingredients and saying if the price is worth it. They're around $30-$40 dollars but the ingredients seem so simple.
It looks like you put a lot of time and effort into making and editing this video. There's lots of good information, but I didn't finish it because there's one important part missing: You never showed the back of your hair. My biggest issue with most of these curling methods is that it only looks good in the front and like you said, it leaves the back straight
Can you give us your thoughts on how well the Shark Flexstyler performs? Dyson products seem so good but the price is so hard to justify because I would only want the blow dryer, round (oval) brush and the curling attachments. I would really appreciate it because you have such thorough reviews.
A few suggestions- 1) Try putting a lightweight hair mouse in before putting your hair in the curls. It can be a little tricky to get it right but it does help them last. The downside is that I feel like my hair is a little more tangley. 2) I wrap the curls higher than Abbey. Hers look very relaxed and, for me, that method falls out easily as the day wears on. 3) use a smaller curler. I use a light weight scarf so the curls are tighter and this helps them stay longer. I wish I could get the big bouncy voluminous waves but my hair just can’t hold that curl easily.
It’s moments like these I realize I have too much hair. Her hairs longer than mine but I was shocked how little cross braiding it took to wrap all her hair over the rod I got all my hair in the rod but not before running out of room ✋ I had to tie it off with a scrunchie, scrunch all the hair to the top, then finish braiding 😭
I have tried the octocurl twice based on watching your videos but I struggle with a halo of frizz at the top of my head where the hair doesn’t curl around the strips. Any thoughts? I use good products…I do have naturally curly hair so maybe it’s my hair type
Try leave-in conditioner as @Crystal Mendoza suggested. You might also try the flower crown method and use some tension in the top crown area to smooth out that section. If you are starting with dry hair and using a spray bottle to lightly dampen (which works great for textured hair) just spray below the crown area. Hope that helps! xoxo
When I click your Amazon link , it takes me to the Amazon online storefront . I only use my Amazon app, you should find a way to have a link for inside the app . Thank you!!
Loooove this video, when I cut my hair short I used to just braid it and it gave me great curls since my hair is really thin and I don't have much. But now that it's grown that method is just not doing it for me, I feel something is missing...something like a sock lol. I will try first with the sock and then try to find those other things because I loved some of the results.
I’ve just moved into a new country, our things haven’t came yet(Ofc I brought essentials tho) we are staying in a hotel the leggings failed miserably but I found a thick ribbon and that works!
Very nice.. I'm pretty old and get beautiful curls in my shoulder length hair by using foam rollers and or pin curls.. try it. Been around forever. I prefer curling all the hair, not just the lower part. The weight of the hair prevents a tall head of curls. I'm going to try the socks on my man's long hair though.
Ok Abby, thank you for sharing , question:) since octocurl sits on top of your hair, does it leave circle indentation on your crown area, my hair is thin so am afraid it would leave dents ?
I use a robe tie but I use a lot less hair each time I wrap my hair around so I have tiny curls.. the shortest layers in my hair are practically nonexistent when I do this 😅 I'm going to have to use bigger sections of hair
Is using these no heat less curl things wrapped in a silk bonnet considered a protective hairstyle? Also when using heartless curls they advise you to mist the hair but it’s said that putting hair up when wet is very very damaging so is it best not to do that step? TY
Everytime I finish wrapping (I’ve tried the socks & headband) once I tie everything off my hair becomes super loose because the sock or headband almost unravel 😭 I have no idea what I’m doing wrong, but I so want this to work!!
Mine used to do the same until I saw that you need to keep the rod close to your neck as you wrap the bits of hair, not far away otherwise it'll just unwind quickly. 😊👍
hey abbey! Ive noticed that when i blowdry my hair with a roundbrush is feels super soft and silky, but then whenever i straighten my hair it feels so dry like straw! Do you have any idea as to why this could be? Or if its the straightener im using? ❤
It’s likely the amount of heat and how it’s distributed across the hair. Hair dryers get hot, but some of that heat is lost as the air travels between the nozzle and your hair. With a straightener you’re putting two heated plates in direct contact with your hair which is more stressful. Getting a straightener that allows for lower heat settings and/or has plates that are made of materials that are more gentle on the hair (like ceramic) may help, but without knowing what straightener you use it’s hard to say how much those things might be a problem with what you’re currently using.
I grew up having thin socks tide around my head before every Sunday morning. The sock curl always made my hair look great. It was a different method and a different time, but my maw maw knew what was up.

Using leggings was the best thing I learned from TikTok. I would never go back to using heat on my hair again. They last so long too.
Waiting for my hair to grow long enough for that method
I haven’t tried that one yet!! I’m gonna try tonight!!
Mine last barely for two hours.. 😭
Can you do a video showing the three different methods of the octocurl please? Interested in seeing the results in the curl.
How long do the curls last?
@@laurenelliott5175depends on your hair, whether you heat it or wet it prior, how tight you roll it and how long you leave it in for.
To get tighter curls and not a lot of fabric on your head: Cut off pieces of the legs of pantyhose, stretch them a bit so the edges will roll in, no fray no running stitches. I bought a heatless band thing per watching you do the robe thing and tried it out this week and it turned out so great! Curls lasted for 3 days!!
I grew up with my mom tying our hair with strips torn from an old sheet. Perfect curls every time!
Have you tried the heatless flower curl yet? That one is really cool! Super comfortable and it works amazingly well!

the "section off crown" method is good for volume and the "t-shirt hair donut" by my pawfect family.

Roll your front portion with the headband gives better front results. It also helps to hold it in place when you do the sides.
Did you start with already loosely curled hair or like air dried hair!?
The Shonagh Scott method!!! Life changing!
Omg the way you tie the ends of the octocurl is a game changer! I have it but didn't always love it cuz the ends would get so kinked!!
Yes, she did a great job showing the best way to tie off the ends. Hope that method works well for you! 💛
Great video! You got me into heatless curls. I'll never use a curling iron again. I love them and it takes like 2 minutes! Thank you! ♥️🙏

Red’s Makeup Bag has a great video for Bob length hair. Hers turned out amazing.
One question for you, how do you recommend SLEEPING with the Octocurl?? Do you remove the headband or…? Thanks in advance ☺️
I notice that the strands you are wrapping are quite thick. More curling effect, tighter locks and probably lasting longer if the strands are thiner.

But is the octocurl comfortable to sleep in? You didn't mention that like you did with all the other techniques
Pleaseee do another week long hair vlog with heatless curls ❤❤❤
Any tips on how the curls last? My hair is straight after 10 minutes 🤣🤣
@@Kelly1237 thanks! Mousse doesn't make a difference, but the rest sounds good. ☺️👍🏻
I love your showdown videos!
I used the bathrobe belt but folded in half and twisted it before starting putting my hair in
Whattttt….Did you read my mind, girl? This is what I needed.
Which products will make heatless curls last longer? Are here some dupes to Oribe „Creme for Style“?
Got really excited for this video and then when we got to the part where you said and now my favourite one… also sponsored…
It’s moments like these I realize I have too much hair. Her hairs longer than mine but I was shocked how little cross braiding it took to wrap all her hair over the rod
I got all my hair in the rod but not before running out of room ✋ I had to tie it off with a scrunchie, scrunch all the hair to the top, then finish braiding 😭
I have tried the octocurl twice based on watching your videos but I struggle with a halo of frizz at the top of my head where the hair doesn’t curl around the strips. Any thoughts? I use good products…I do have naturally curly hair so maybe it’s my hair type
Have you tried a leave-in conditioner or a creamy mouse?
@@crystalmendoza5727 Thank you! 💛
Try leave-in conditioner as @Crystal Mendoza suggested. You might also try the flower crown method and use some tension in the top crown area to smooth out that section. If you are starting with dry hair and using a spray bottle to lightly dampen (which works great for textured hair) just spray below the crown area. Hope that helps! xoxo
@@octocurl you are so welcome the octocurl has saved my hair!! 🤗 I just love it!
@@crystalmendoza5727 So happy to hear that! Thank you! 💕
You are so great and honest! thank you for all your tips!
Thanks Abbey...I think I like your robe tie curl the best:)
My hair is fine and stick straight and never holds a curl. Do you product recommendations to help this technique work?
Octo curl makes the whole thing seem more trouble complex and time consuming . The sock , or other ones seem more simple .
They have your photo up on Temu advertising this octopus curling rod. I just thought if u don’t know already:)
Such a good video!! Thank you! 💗 Lisa
I got the sleepy tie that you mentioned in a recent video and was wondering if that could be used for heatless curls?! 🤔🤔
Thank you, Abbey! Did you have the standard size or long hair octocurl?
Check out the bottom of this chart for sizing info. Hope that helps! 😍 www.octocurl.com/pages/how-to-choose
I use a robe tie but I use a lot less hair each time I wrap my hair around so I have tiny curls.. the shortest layers in my hair are practically nonexistent when I do this 😅 I'm going to have to use bigger sections of hair
Would love to see your hair in a ponytail or bun!
How to you keep you hair dry in the shower? Can you keep it completely dry after showering?
omg tysm i tested the legging technic, it works so good ! i finally found my pretty heatless technic, i can't even do that with an iron xD
Would love your review of the Sleepy Tie for preserving blowouts, or any other methods to for keeping that blowout fresh overnight! ❤
Can I sleep with my hair wrapped in the octocurl? How long do you keep the octocurl in to give you these results?
Is using these no heat less curl things wrapped in a silk bonnet considered a protective hairstyle?
Also when using heartless curls they advise you to mist the hair but it’s said that putting hair up when wet is very very damaging so is it best not to do that step? TY
What products do you recommend to put on before your hair before this heartless curl method?
Thank you so so so much for this video!! SO helpful!💗😭
Like your direction.. very understandable!
I find that to just do one French braid down the center is easier and has a better result. Slightly damp and sleep on it 👍🏼
I apologize if you answered this in the video, but which method would work the best for shoulder length hair?
