CLIP DESCRIPTION:
In a casino, everybody has to watch everyone else. Ace (Robert De Niro) keeps his eye on the casino manager (Don Rickles), and the eye in the sky watches all.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The inner-workings of a corrupt Las Vegas casino are exposed in Martin Scorsese's story of crime and punishment. The film chronicles the lives and times of three characters: "Ace" Rothstein (Robert De Niro), a bookmaking wizard; Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci), a Mafia underboss and longtime best friend to Ace; and Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone, in a role she was born to play), a leggy ex-prostitute with a fondness for jewelry and a penchant for playing the field. Ace plays by the rules (albeit Vegas rules, which, as he reminds the audience in voiceover, would make him a criminal in any other state), while Nicky and Ginger lie, cheat, and steal their respective ways to the top. The film's first hour and a half details their rise to power, while the second half follows their downfall as the FBI, corrupt government officials, and angry mob bosses pick apart their Camelot piece by piece.

I play poker in casinos as a hobby, always fun to look up and occasionally wave. Actually had a floor manager walk up to me about ten mins after a wave and jokingly tell me “surveillance says hello back”
How do casinos make money from poker? You only play against other players, not the house.
@@wayneurquhart7192 Rake, the house takes a cut of every pot won in a cash game. For instance, I win a $70 pot the house make take $6 for instance. For tournaments part of the buy-in goes towards just paying the casino.

Casting Rickles was genius. The guy actually knew Vegas intimately from having performed there so many times, including during this very period.
Plus he did a fantastic job. Great comedians are often great actors, because it's a hell of a lot harder to be funny than to be charming or attractive.

They showed a lot of that on the James Caan show Las Vegas on NBC. Granted that show was on in the mid 2000s so the technology nowadays is probalby even more advanecd.

I worked at a local casino here in Des Moines, Iowa, and it was pretty much exactly the same.

Check out the song. Believe or not it was on New York radio in 1970. Edited of course. "Compared To What" Les McCann and Eddie Harris recorded live in the Montruex,Switzerland jazz festival in 1969 and released on Atlantic in 1970. Written by Gene McDaniels.
It's actually a great song and its lyrics speak to today's situation more than ever
The entire soundtrack is amazing, but "Compared to What" is probably my favorite. Though "Slippin' and Slidin'" by Little Richard is pretty good too.

The cashiers gotta watch customers. The section manager watches cashiers. The shift managers watches the section managers. The deputy managers watches the shift managers. The managers gotta watch the deputy managers. And the eye in the sky is watching us all.
Eye in the sky is blind because guy maintaining it got outsourced to El Cheapo's Discont Securty and they just note that it works just fine.
Scorsese has an encyclopedic knowledge of blues and jazz, and “Compared to What?” was perfect for this scene.
The first 5 secs of this opening shot cinematically describes Sam's exposition. Brilliant work.

a good friend of mine that's in the business like myself was at the Stardust when all this Shit was going down. Told me he was there the night 200 + FBI agents came in a shut down the casino. Love hearing stories from the old timers.

It's unusual to me to see behind the Pesci and Deneiro you have all these comedy legends. Don Rickles, Alan King, Smother. All playing serious roles. Great movie
Scorsese has a tradition of casting comedians in serious roles going back to Jerry Lewis in The King of Comedy. Other examples are Ray Romano in The Irishman and Jonah Hill in The Wolf of Wall Street.

One of the GREATEST movies' of all time, and definitely Scorsese's best film
Robbie Robertson, lead guitarist for The Band, is Marty's musical consultant, but I bet Marty makes his job real easy considering the songs that were used for Mean Streets.
That’s debatable. Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas are normally considered his best.
I whole heartedly agree Casino is his best work. Followed by Raging Bull and The Irishmen

The cinematography from Bob Richardson added another level of brilliance. Before he went overboard with the overhead lighting in his movies.
This is well edited but it’s not even in contention for best edited scene in a Scorsese film. I think the poolside scene in Raging Bull (or almost any of the bouts) are better, for starters. This would be peak editing for a lot of filmmakers but it’s another day at the office for Scorsese.
So Frank Rosenthal who Sam Rothstein is based on had a show too. Don Rickles was a guest on that show and has a role in Casino. Kind of weird!

This was definitely Scorcese's best looking movie. There were better movies (Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull) but this was the best edited, most crisp looking film. The Irishman looks like a student film, compared to Casino.
I think his greatest movies are Taxi Driver, raging bull and Goodfellas. Age of innocence comes next, then The Irishman, king of comedy and then casino
It's kinda like the board game Stratego, except that the casino'd need a spy who watches over Robert De Niro. The ex-cheats watching everyone from above probably become pretty bored, like watching a radar screen all day, every day.

Its been some years. But during collage, I worked as part time auditor for casino. Mostly watching count room several hours a day on a monitor. Funny detail, most of the staff in casino has uniforms with no pockets. Uniforms are specially designed to have no spaces to hide chips or bills.
And there’s this guy watching everyone watch it.

In the NFL everybody watches everybody. The quarterback watches the offense, the offensive coordinator watches the quarterback, the head coach watches the offensive coordinator, the general manager watches the head coach, the team president watches the general manager, the owner watches the team president, and the Roger Goodell watches us all.

I used to work in the biggest casino in the country. On a Sunday, after a busy weekend there would be close to 20 million in cash. Surprisingly the security is not what Hollywood videos make it seem. I would be the only in there and could walk around with 500 grand like nothing. Only 1 door separated me from just leaving most likely noticed. Still no amount of money is worth your freedom and to betray trust given to you.
Besides, why walk around with 500k once, when you can do it every week lol
Not to mention if you worked there in the 60's and "just walked out"..it'd be the last time you ever walked anywhere.
