This is so reassuring to know there's a way to undo too much or too little when I get my wheel in. I consider you one of my top 3 resources for spinning. Thank you for the awesome content!
Thank you thank you thank you for making this video. All of my yarn is either over spun or slubbing when I spin. I am so glad that I can fix it and am not wasting fiber.
Your videoes are so helpful! Thank you for doing this😃 I have been spinning for a couple of years now, but this is a craft you need a long time to master. So much to learn. Greetings from Norway
This was exactly what I needed to see! So scared to over/under spin. I finished plying my first yarn last night and I think it's ok but haven't set the twist or taken of the bobbin yet. Your the best Evie! Thanks for everything you do for us newbies!!!
There is no bad yarn, only inappropriate yarn for a particular effect or project. Every yarn has a place, even if you just set it aside and put it in your stash, for a future project. All yarn is good yarn.
Thank you! I've always had a problem with over twisting and just learned to accept the results. I'm going to give this a shot with my next spin to see if I can get the yarn that I actually want.
I did this by hand one night with the help of a ball winder. It wasn't as much but it was a proper wound ball. My rotater cuff was irritated with the movements I used to flop the yarn over and over. I'm glad I did it and I'm even more pleased to see an easier way! Thank you for this!
Thank you so much for this video. I had a bobbin of seriously overspun yarn. I was going to give up on it, but this video encouraged me to keep going. I unspun it and chain plied it, and it is now hanging up to dry and looks like it might be usable. I’m a beginning spinner, so it is definitely art yarn, but all my yarn is at this point. I’m getting better. I’m doing much better on my e-spinner than my wheel, but baby steps. Thank you for this great channel and sharing all of your knowledge.
If you think that's twisted you should see some of the singles that I've yet to rewind 😥😥 But at least now I know how to get them sorted out 😁 ❤❤thank you for sharing your knowledge and skill's
This is awesome!!! Being a new spinner, I find myself at the place where i am over spinning my fiber. I was just wondering if there was a way to take reduce the amount of spin. Thank you for your very informative channel.
I spun two sets of the same color fiber but months apart. One was crunchy and hard (overplied) and the other was still defined but not as tight. So I put the hard one back through my Ashford e-spinner and I could see it relax. It’s so beautiful and soft now and will make a great shawl. I agree it’s good to know that we do have control of our spinning and can do some things over to change the final product. Great video thank you!
I just finished my very first drop spindle spin of a small piece of wool fibre and I realise it is severely overspun. As I was spinning it I kept adding more twist because I thought I wasn't doing enough. It is only 5 grams and I probably won't respin it but I did find that letting the ball hang and untwist a bit as I wound it did help. I will put it down to learning curve and see how I go on the next one. Atm I am using some odds and ends left over from felting (which I no longer do) just for learning on, so nothing lost. Just practising. Thank you for this video, it clarified some things for me. 😀❤
Yes, you made this video for me!!! Much of my early spins are too tight and I despaired of finding a use for them. Thank you for showing a way back to useful yarn. Hugs to you!!
Thank you for another excellent video!! I've just started learning to use a double drive wheel after exclusively using a single drive for 10+ years and I'm really struggling with getting the tension/take-up balanced and also adjusting to the different speed. The yarn I've made today is SO overspun and brittle. I'll have a go taking some of that out tomorrow :) What I will say is that it's so much fun to be a beginner again!
I did not realize that this was only two weeks ago. I actually just fixed some underspun yarn by doing this same thing. Three or four videos of yours later and I FINALLY understood "drafting".
I’m SO glad you shared this process. Excellent information and teaching. It must have been hours and hours of unspinning and plying! I have had so much trouble finding that twist sweet spot, and I’m still searching, really, but I’ll keep practicing!🥰
Thank you for posting this as I am a newbie and I have about 8 oz. of overspun yarn that is full of corkscrews that I thought I would have to throw away. I'm going to try to take some twist out by using your method. A big help and encouragement!
Good to know you can fix this... How to fix two opposing twists plied together by mistake? Z twist on the wheel, S twist on my spindle. Plied together, made a mess. Lol I'm learning lots from you!
Hi Evie, thankyou for sharing this. Your knowledge is much appreciated. Love the Final yarn, the colours are almost jewel like. Can't wait to see what you make with it. Happy Spinning Take care & stay safe. Love Jen xxxx
Thank you so much for sharing your ideas, tips, tricks, experiments, and knowledge! I just spun a yarn that was really over-spun and, ugh, it is a mess (trying to get used to the super fast revolutions of my Matchless while I treadle slowly and am not able to draft quick enough). I am going to try to re-spin it and see if I can salvage it. Thank you for your sage advice!
Should I unspin a high energy single or wait until it's plied and then see it it's still needs to be unspun? Thank you for your videos. Everything about the videos is top notch...from lighting, angles, background and even your neatness. Much appreciated.
What a interesting video ! .Re spinning has come into my mind, even for the commercial cotton yarn that I get at Walmart that it is cheaper but I found that the yarn have lost their twist .Also, I could re twist it for a finer 🧶yarn for a special project. Can one re twist a yarn with a hand spindle ...lol or you need and e spinner? Thank you Jillian for you educational videos!!🧶🤗🌺. Happy spinning!
I think it was a bit similar to ripping back a whole lot of rows to fix a stitch error. It's double the work, but you know that if you don't fix it you will have to live with it and always think, "I should have fixed it when I had a chance!" Lol! I'm really glad I did it in the end! 💜🌷🐑
Great video ,could have used this info in the past..will probably need it in the future tbh. Oh, finish spinning some wool the other day and my husband asked if I was going to thwack it, he thinks it hilarious
WOWZIE .... is this the fiber that Mark helped you pick out from Paradise .... the one that sold out after your video (heehee) How exciting and glad to see you can remove twist ....
My newer wheel is bigger diameter so I think it twists more, and combined with fiber of long staple length I'm spinning up some real piano wire! Yes, I adjusted my tension to make sure uptake of yarn was not too slow and also used the biggest whorl. Maybe I need to buy a whorl with slower speed? At any rate looks like I am going to have to try your reverse spinning.
Beginner here... Great video help! I respun over twisted S spun bobbin into a Z spun bobbin. Looks so much better. For two ply, I would need to have two S or two Z spun bobbins together, right?
Thank you for the demo, I didn’t think to add or subtract twist in the singles. I have some handspun that is already plied, spun z and plied s, that is already set. How would you add more twist to 2 ply already set?
I would try a sample first to see if you like the result and try adding more twist to the finished yarn, and then rewashing it to reset it. I'd love to know how it turns out! 💜🌷🐑🧶
Oooh I have to try this. I recently learnt a bit more about twist angles and I'm fairly sure I have been under plying up until now. If I've already washed my yarns, do you think it would still work?
I love that colorway! Are you sure it's chocolate cover cherries? I don't see listed on the link. I see tea toast and cake, looks similar.. Maybe they changed the name??
This braid came out of my stash so it could be different now. Your best bet is to contact them and ask. I just took a look at "Tea Toast and Cake" and it does look really similar. I think it has more orange instead of brown compared to what I spun, but the pinks and that darker purple-maroon look very close. ✨🧶😊
You can try a sample and see what happens! I've added twist to my yarn after it was plied and finished and it gave it more spring and bounce. Try it and see! 😀💜🐑🧶
Thank you so much for showing that even great a spinner can still over/under spin and how to "correct" it. I never did understand the s and z and now I do. Thank you for your information and video... By the way that yarn is gorgeous. Where did you get the roving?
I put too much twist into a 2ply yarn (I blame the tennis match I was watching!) but thanks to having watched this video I knew I could correct it and it is now a lovely bouncy skein of 2ply BFL.
Thanks for all of your very helpful videos! I am a relatively new spinner, it decided to do my Olympic challenge by perfecting my comfort zone in spinning! I spun 8 ounces this weekend and I am feeling a little bit more confident, but my skeins are slightly over twisted. Any recommendations for relaxing my spinning?
2 questions: where do you get the yarn gauge tool and does this technique work when one bobbin has thick and thin twist? Or should i just use it for practice
Mrs, Jillian I got a big question for you; I am looking to buy my first spinning wheel Ashford Traditional, some of them are a bit cheeper that say "unfinished" what they mean by that? is there something wrong with them? thank you, so much and waiting for your input.
I don’t know if this comment will be seen since the video is older but here’s to trying. I am double plying some singles right now that don’t have enough twist, but respinning them is more work than I’m wanting to do right now. The singles have been sitting for quite some time and I’m trying to free up some bobbin space. For the yarn to be balanced, the ply twist is much looser than I like the look of so I’m over plying. Now, it’s not kinking or coiling onto itself, but when it does ply back on itself when I let it hang. Is there any way to relax this yarn when I’m done plying so that it’s still usable? It’s really gorgeous and it’s my first yarn that is fingering weight consistently which I’m proud of, so I’d like to use it at some point. I am just really hoping there is something I can do other than respinning the singles. 😬🙏 anyone? Help? 😁🥰
Evie, thanks so much for making this particular video, you covered a lot of issues I think we all have. I have been having soooo much trouble with over twist in singles that its very close to corkscrews, sometimes I can't even avoid them. I didn't think you could use this method but next time I will try for sure. I also think there is much to be said about the properties of the fiber you are working with...I love Corriedale(of course its the only thing I've spun besides alpaca) but it is definitely springy which I think maybe adds to the ease of over twisting inadvertently. Whats your thoughts on this? Is there something that tells you how to achieve the certain weight yarns you are trying to achieve? I guess I don't understand how all the wpi's, degree of twist ties into exactly which yarn you are trying to make in the end..is it something on the tool or a magic recipe somewhere on the net? LOL...Thanks Evie!! I really like your problem solving and technical videos...theres a lot to spinning what you really want! 🌺🍄🌻😘
The differences between types of wool 100% affects how it spins. My favorite resource to preview what to expect is The Fleece and Fiber Sourcebook, but I still always do my own samples. The angle of twist shows how much twist is in the yarn. If there is a high level of twist, the angle will be more severe. It's one way to check the yarn. As far as knowing a formula to get the exact yarn... there are general guidelines but because fibers and spinners are all unique, you'll still have to do the sampling to check your spin. I highly reccomend practicing and keeping samples to look back at and see how your yarn spins up. 😊💖🐑🧶
@@JillianEve Yes, I'm waiting for the Fleece and Fiber book you are speaking of, currently I'm reading The Spinners Book of Fleece, it also talks about some of this too. I thought if you had a project in mind that needed a certain weight yarn like DK or worsted you would work toward that goal in your singles and plying to achieve that yarn. I think I need a few more bobbins in my arsenal as well too, and patience with myself considering I've only had my wheel maybe a month and a half, also like @Coralie Rees mentioned I'm treadling too fast, its not an uphill race!! LOL ..Thanks Evie for everything, you're an angel! 😇
@@coralcee You hit the nail on the head, this is something I just recently read about too and one of the ladies in our spin group also confirmed exactly that as well...I'm not peddling uphill!! LOL There are sooo many variables to get what you are wanting to spin! Thanks for your help!! :-)
How did you ply it? I have some spun yarn that keeps breaking as I'm plying. It is all on one bobbin. I can't figure out how to keep it together to ply
Is your yarn low twist? Maybe it needs a little more twist to hold together? If my yarn breaks while I'm plying, I overlap the broken ends and then use the ply twist to hold it together. It can get fussy though if the yarn keeps breaking. 💖🐑🧶
Argghhh so I've overspun when I've plied to make a 2 ply yarn. I've taken it off the bobbin and it's in a skein that's fighting with itself! Infact I have 4 skeins, 2 ok, 2 ridiculously overplied. Completely my fault, I decided to ply on my Ashford Joy, which I hadn't plied on and it was a bit snaggy going through the orifice so I upped the ratio! Big mistake! Have you untwisted singles or plied yarn? I can't quite see. I guess I will need to put the skein back onto a bobbin and then spin back onto another bobbin just making sure it's the opposite direction to the S that I plied it... wish me luck 🙏🏼 🙂
I just overspun my single and somehow screwed it up when coming off the niddy noddy by not tying the 4 sides. So I figured I'd wash it and see if I could relax the tightness. It did relax quite a bit but it still is overtwisted. Do you think I can fix the overspin with the yarn after it's been washed? It's not plyed and I want it as a single.
Sure, it shouldn't be a problem. If you were trying to draft it, then the washing might be a problem, because it might have felted a bit. But just spinning/unspinning it? That should be fine.
I’m sccuuuuuurrrrred! Hear Me out-what if I tie one end to my chain link fence and then walk to the other side of the yard holding the yarn and let it untwist to satisfaction? Would that be safer? 😖
Twist mystery is a NIGHTMARE in my new journey of spinning 😅
Mine too I’m terrified I plyed an s with a z 😢

The result of this yarn (with each ply on a different amount of twist) is SO Beautiful! Really inspiring 🤩

It means the wood is unfinished so you can stain or paint it if you want to. It's a wonderful wheel! Happy spinning!
would it be too nutty to try to fix twist( made on a wheel ) using a spindle ?
Not at all! Wheels and spindles are tools that provide twist. Use the one that works for your purpose. I switch from one to the other often! 🧶😊
Can you remove twist from a plied and finished yarn? I have some targhee that I added too much twist to while chain plying.

Learning to treadle slower also helps to lower your twist.....I was guilty of fast treadling
Great!
🌷💜🐑🧶
Update, skein on amish style wool winder and looking good so far!! Yay... thank you x
I actually overspun and plied yarn and then realized the mistake and unplied it (that's a pain) and fixed it to ply it back
Yes a pain, but were you glad you fixed it?
@@JillianEve oh yeah. Much better yarn
What if you under plied can you re-ply
My question at the moment also...
Twist is still a mystery for me especially when plying. It just happens.
So technically, re-spinning fiber smaller, you could just take all the twist out of it and re-draft it the opposite twist than what it originally was.
