    This is brilliant! I have the exact same wheel that I got 3 weeks ago and which a friend tightened the hinge screws . He was intrigued about how they worked so while I was on a trip, he researched the type of wheel, the different parts and how to spin on TH-cam. He realized my wheel was minus the Scotch tension, so into his workshop he went and made one for it complete with a beautiful wooden handle (for lack of a better word) for fine tuning the tension on the bobbin. I purchased roving while on the trip and I have been practicing treadling (a lot) and drafting just a bit... Your video is the most informative I have found. Thank you for taking the time to record. Cheers, Fern

    No idea where it came from but one of the voices in my head said "you know... how DOES a spinning wheel work?" To which I had no answer.
    You did a great job going through both what needs to be done and WHY it needs to be done. That second part is perhaps far more important than the first.
    Thank you for that intro to spinning wheels!

    Great video!
    I adore the Ashford traditional. My first wheel and by far my favourite!
    A tip - sometimes if my hips hurt, I put both feet on the single treadle and this helps me sit square to the wheel and reduce stress on the hips and back.
    Another tip - some wheels have a treadle where the heel can press down on the upstroke. I find this helps for long spinning sessions!
    Thanks for making such an awesome tutorial!

    My mum taught me how to prepare and spin wool but I haven't done it for years. Recently I inherited both spinning wheels and equipment, and wool fleeces, including the dyes. I'd forgotten how to do it but this lesson bought it all back, so thank you so much. I can see this to be a very useful skill in the near future. Amongst the many other craft skills my mum taught me, knitting, chrocreing, sewing and patchwork God bless her, she was always my inspiration.

    I set mine up with a sewing machine motor so that I could get a consistent rotation. I also added tungsten weights to the drive wheel to stabilize the rotation. I use mine for twine making, so it's not exactly what I would use for yarn. I could, but that would be like using a commercial long haul truck, sans trailer, to tow a Prius. (A vehicle that's designed for upwards of 100,000 lbs to move a 1,200lb car.)

      @@TextileIndie I hope so, too. I started crocheting when I was four, crewel embroidery when I was six, and plain sewing by hand and on a machine when I was 12 or 13, but I've never tried to spin or to weave. How hard is it to use a drop spindle, do you know? I've read about it, but it seems impossible to me.

    My grandaunt Peggy, who was also my next-door neighbor, had a spinning wheel. It was pretty old because it was made when her grandmother was a little girl. Peggy told me stories about it and showed me how to use it. Since I was a very little girl, I didn't quite pick up on it, but I was interested in the stories. Peggy died in May of 2003, at 78 years old. I was only 6 years old at the time. Now, I am 27 years old. If Peggy were still alive right now, she'd be 99 years old. I always tell my youngest brothers Jed, Isaiah, and Jeremiah, ages 20, 18, and 15, about Peggy. I even show them pictures of her. Peggy was Daddy's aunt. She was never married. She never had any children or grandchildren. She often babysat me and my little brothers. Jed, Isaiah, and Jeremiah, never got to meet her. I always used to visit Peggy from birth to age 6. Daddy even took the family to visit Peggy in the hospital. We also went to her funeral. Before Peggy died, she gave me and the family I live with her special spinning wheel. Now, it's collecting dust in the attic. It's so extremely old now.

    This is such a great video! Thank you so much! I am wondering why you don’t want the bobbin to spin? Is it important or helpful to keep it stationary? Thanks so much!

    • @TextileIndie
      @TextileIndie  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words!
      When spinning on a wheel, it is important to control the speed and tension of the yarn being spun. Allowing the bobbin to spin freely can disrupt this control and lead to uneven or inconsistent yarn.
      By controlling the speed and tension of the yarn, the spinner can create a consistent and even yarn with the desired thickness and texture. If the bobbin spins freely, the yarn can become too loose or too tight, leading to inconsistencies in the final product.
      Additionally, allowing the bobbin to spin freely can cause the yarn to become tangled or twisted, which can be difficult to untangle and can result in a less than ideal final product.

    Which way do you put the bobbin? Does it matter? How do you lubricate the wheel (I have a used new-to-me Louet 10 and it squeaks)! Can you create a video on how to ply? Thank you! Great video! Beginner here!

    • @TextileIndie
      @TextileIndie  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment and questions!
      The direction in which you put the bobbin into the spinning wheel does not typically matter, but it's a good idea to consult the user manual for your specific wheel to make sure.
      If your spinning wheel is squeaking, it may be a sign that it needs to be lubricated. You can use a small amount of spinning wheel oil to lubricate the moving parts of the wheel, such as the flyer shaft and bearings. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions and use only the recommended type of oil for your spinning wheel.
      As for creating a video on how to ply, that's a great suggestion! I'll keep it in mind for future video content. In the meantime, there are many resources available online, such as spinning books and tutorials, that can provide guidance on how to ply yarn.
      Thank you again for your feedback, and I'm glad to hear that you found the video helpful as a beginner spinner!

    I was so happy to come across your video. I am new at spinning, and I found a wheel just like yours at a yard sale. It’s an Ashford traditional. Can you tell me what year yours is. And is there a place I can get an owners manual for an older ashford? I think it’s from the 1970s.

    Hi and thank you for this video! I recently acquired a vintage Ashford Traditional. I think it is a similar or identical model to yours. One thing that is happening when I’m spinning is that when I stop treadling, the drive wheel keeps turning a bit or rocks a little bit. The woman from whom I bought it told me that it is weighted and that’s why that happens, but I am finding it to be bothersome. Have you experienced this? And if so, can you offer any advice to minimize that? Thank you!

    • @TextileIndie
      @TextileIndie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's taken me awhile to answer this - so it may not be a question anymore.
      My wheel does not do this - possible something is loose.
      You can take your wheel to a repair shop. I would search 'spinning wheel repair near me' or 'fiber sellers near me' - something like that and see if you have any shops in your area.
      For instance, Paradise Fibers in Spokane, WA does wheel repair.

      @@TextileIndie thanks for your response. I actually have an additional question for which I can find no answer really anywhere. When you change ratios (whorls), do you always need to adjust the mother of all to align the drive band? Or if you get it set up where the center whorl is lined up, it usually works for all of them? Does that make sense? Thanks!

    • @TextileIndie
      @TextileIndie  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! She was using what's called a great wheel. It had a sharp piece that flax was stuck over to hold it in place while being spun. Not a feature on most wheels. So modern spinners can rest easy, there won't be any enchanted sleep lasting a hundred years occurring while spinning on an Ashford😁.

    At what stage do you start moving the fibre up the hooks to fill up the bobbin?

    • @TextileIndie
      @TextileIndie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I typically do this when I see that the yarn I'm adding to the bobbin is beginning to slump over. So when I have about 3/4" to 1" thick of the yarn on the bobbin I'll move to the next hook. This can take time to master, I'm still working on creating smooth evenly built bobbins.

    • @TextileIndie
      @TextileIndie  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It could be that the thickness of the yarn is too think and it can't feed through the orifice. Or...it's not on the correct notches so it's not leading into the bobbin. Let me know if either of those work.

    I have an Ashford traditional but when I try plying I can’t maintain a reverse movement on the wheel. Why is that you think?

    • @TextileIndie
      @TextileIndie  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're having difficulty maintaining a reverse movement on your Ashford Traditional spinning wheel when plying, there are a few possible reasons why this may be happening:
      Tension: Make sure that the tension on your wheel is set properly for plying. If the tension is too loose, it may be difficult to maintain a reverse movement.
      Drive band: Check the drive band on your spinning wheel to ensure that it is properly seated on the wheel and flyer. A loose or improperly seated drive band can affect the reverse movement.
      Hook position: The position of the hooks on the flyer can also affect the reverse movement. Make sure that the hooks are properly positioned and that the bobbin is seated correctly.
      Technique: It's possible that your technique may need some adjustment when plying. Experiment with different hand positions and movements to find what works best for you.
      Maintenance: It's also possible that your spinning wheel may need some maintenance or lubrication. Check the manufacturer's instructions for your specific wheel to ensure that it is properly maintained.
      Hope one of those ideas helps. If you have a local spinning guild or a fiber store that sells wheels and fiber, you could take your wheel and have someone watch you spin to diagnose the problem.
