- Josh has apparently always wanted an old Range Rover. I have no idea why he wants to punish himself so badly. Well, he bought one at auction sight unseen, and it's just as bad as you imagine.

I love these but if I weren't a Range Rover Mechanic, I don't think I'd ever buy one. I had a 2001 Disco, my favorite car of all time but even when it was new, it had 13 recalls in 2 years.

I love it. All my Rangies have over 200k including my 95 Classic and have been very reliable, just stay away from the early BMW 322 ones and your fine.

As a person that owns a L322 5.0 SC here in Austin, there is no such things as a cheap Range Rover. Also, keep that engine temp in check during the summer or you are going to have a bad time

I live near Land Rover HQ in the UK and any LR product is known for being in the garage more than on the road, and this is for the new ones. He's going to be under the hood a lot. Definitely braver than me. Good luck. Expecting lots of content on this as it'll certainly deliver on that promise.

I had a 88 Range Rover that I loved. I had to find a good mechanic and Bill Rhodes of Bill's European Automotive Repair in Santa Fe, NM was the answer. I don't know what happened to him but my ex-wife took the Range Rover and the Viper in the divorce so it doesn't matter. As for the Range Rover decal on the back, I put green tape over parts of mine so it said "Hang Over".

Good luck josh with the old p38. As well as a lot of perf cars ( hence why I follow Dan since he started NGS) , I've had every model RR, all full fat as we call the big RR. I ventured to a sport 4.2 supercharged that I didn't like so went back to the FFRR). I'm now up to l405 4.4d v8 autobiography that I currently have as my daily. The brand new shape is far too expensive now for what it is and to take a big hit on depreciation buying it too new, so I'm keeping my 100k miles l405, as I can't see £150k difference between mine and it and probably losing half of that in under 4 yrs if did go for one now, so will wait and consider 2nd hand! Tbh the best value one is the last of the l322 model v8s I should have kept, a good services low mileage one prob well under £10k now. Jeremy Clarkson and other car celebs like Harrys garage (ex EVO mag editor) swear by them and use them for farm work as well. Not like city school run users, which to me seems pointless! Both l322 and l405 are much more luxurious and refined as well than the old p38 but you didn't buy for that. No doubt you paid buttons for it or did they pay you to take it! 😂
If you know about or read up on them and the daft things that can go wrong with them which are usually easily fixable, if you address quickly like you guys have the facilities, should be fine. Although one you have will be a challenge for sure by looks of it to get into at least mechanical shape. The fact that it's got to that mileage is a feat. Beauty over there is likely no rust and they are a ladder chassis, so not too difficult to lift body off if you had to get at everything easier. I would get that engine checked right away as the old 4.6 suffered from porous block. Unless you don't care and just take the chance. I had all the models of p38, the 4.6 v8 hse first then 4l v8, which was the best of the p38s and not bad on fuel. But then with doing a lot of miles and fuel prices over here going high in early 00s (mental now!) I went for the 2.5 bmw diesel 2nd hand mint example I think in 2004, which was a mistake I thought at first, as it couldn't pull you out of bed. speed and response wise was terrible compared to petrol v8s but it could tow. I had a cunning plan though, as read up on my RR forums and mags that the diesel chip tunes sorted issues and actually gave better mpg, so did that and it was better all round but never on par with petrol performance. Anyway I digress and don't want to be converting you to them! But p38 v8 petrol in good condition and low miles are being shipped from Japan to UK by a specialist and selling at good money here I believe. Japan are RHD like the UK. The first one I had was the classic shape I bought 2nd hand in early 90s. That's mad money now in good condition, especially a 3 door like celebs and royal family used and they promoted back in the 70s. Mine was an original 3.5 rover v8 carb manual I remember as well. Those were the days! 😁
