    I am a novice painter in my 60’s and have learned so much from watching your videos. I love your style and precision. Please keep up your videos and would love to see more on your colour mixing as this is an area I have so much trouble with.

      Gaye Jennings : Same here, I started about a year ago and moved after my first Bob Ross type painting to Michael’s style. Both have their place, but I like the realism in Michael’s style.

      Me too. I can't go forward until I get drawing and color mixing down first... please get the beginner (that's me) started with more drawing and color mixing. I love every single painting you do... and love the fact that you explain what you're doing every step of the way! Carry on ♡ I am going to be a hyperrealistic oil painter in the future and you are the person I want to follow to get there!

    So helpful! Thank you for taking the time to slow it down and walk us through. I use a similar palette setup but hadn't thought about the non-reflective glass nor placing the photo under the glass for color matching. Such great tips and I'm going to try both. Color mixing is my challenge and the way you keep mixing from what you have down makes so much sense.

    Another interesting benefit of using the grey palatte is that if you actually make it half-value grey, it will be easier to see the value of colors. For example if a color is a darker or lighter value, you can judge it easier by looking at the mid tone grey next to it

    Underpainting seems to be key.
    In fact, I would venture to say, this might be one of your most important videos.
    I have watched it and re-watched it probably 50 times and it never gets old; it’s that important.
    The back painting of this picture could almost pass for a completed painting, were the method stylistic-reality instead of photo-reality.
    Reminds me a little bit of “paint by number“ which I did as a kid.

    I laminate my ref photos as glass usually has a very subtle blue tint and the paint casts a shadow onto the ref due to the thickness of the glass. Laminating also makes it more portable.

    I wondered why you remixed the green for the trees, why didn't you just do all the green trees at once? Also, I didn't realize that blocking in with acrylics is a common practice. I have had issues with getting my oils to cover completely, having to resort to double coating.

    • @readhistory2023
      @readhistory2023 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you paint the nearer trees and further trees the same color, even if they are the same species of trees, they'll look like they're all the same distance and that makes the painting look flat. This is a over simplification but the greens will look cooler further away, warmer closer up. It has to do with atmospheric haze.

    • @vernonsteinkamp1088
      @vernonsteinkamp1088 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@readhistory2023 this was not the finished paint but the blocking in stage and colors were just approximate.
