Well, I actually learn YGO by myself and no one teaches me directly. But, I played some older YGO games when I was a child like Yugioh GX GBA or 5D's NDS. So, when MD is released, I just need to refresh my memory and do the same thing with what I do with those older games, playing with the bot in Solo Mode for a while.
    .
I think YGO should at least have 3 different formats.
    1. Advanced: Current format with crazy BS cards.
    2. Intermediate: Slightly weaker, because Konami usually releases modern trash decks too. Decks like them usually don't have a place to play because they're too weak in modern but unusable in legacy format (Edison, etc.). You use the Advanced format to analyze what good cards are there and make a heavier ban list for this format.
    3. Beginner: Place for simple decks like War Rock, Dual Avatar, etc.
    4. Legacy (bonus): This is basically GOAT or older format. What makes it different from the other 3, this format will not get new cards anymore.
    .
Master Duel has detailed data for the good cards and the most playable cards in the game. So, I believe they can easily make different formats based on Deck Power.
    .
But I understand the selling point of Modern YGO is to mix both strong and weak decks in the same format. So, the less skilled player will pick the strong deck. Then, less skilled players will feel very skillful after they beat an opponent with a weaker deck. This is a good motivation to buy a strong deck in the next format, which usually has a higher price than a normal deck. As long as we only have 1 official format, no one can change my mind.

At this point, literally any game modes beyond grinding ranked for gems would be nice for Master Duel.

Yes, for some reason they think the casual player would care about the new cards added to the game.

The worst thing about Yugioh's community, at least in the online space, is how unnecessarily hostile they are towards ANY amount of criticism towards the game, valid or otherwise. It's crazy how you can make entirely reasonable suggestions for how the game can be improved and some people will jump down your throat for it, as if this game isn't a horribly flawed mess, and I say this as somebody who has been deep in the weeds of this game for a long time and owns like 10 different competently built decks IRL.

An interesting thought would be to take some of these iconic characters and have them duel with decks very close to their anime counterpart, and and a new player goes through the game, they mee these people again, but now they have their newer cards.
    Example:
Duel 1 vs Kaiba, Yugi and Jaiden - Their deck resemble their anime deck very closely
Duel 2 vs them - Kaiba starts using Synchros with Maiden with Eyes of Blue and Azure (not all in yet). Yugi with Xyz, Jaiden starts using Mask Change (teach alternate ways of summoning monsters)
Duel 3 - would be their most up to date version with their most recent support.
Not only would this allow teaching of 1- Speed increase, 2-replacong bad cards for good cards 3- New mechanics and nuances to different mechanics, but it would also allow players with a passing knowledge of the anime to stay faimiliarized, by using these well known themes

I haven't played the tcg in over a year because nearly every single time i went to my locals it went like this: i went to my shop in a good mood, 1st round starts and the opponent spends 5+ mins otking me or making an unbreakable board with multiple quick effect omni negates at no cost because proper card design/effect balance is hard which leads to me being sat on my arse twiddling my thumbs for 30 mins waiting for the round to end only for it to happen every other round. The only times i actually got to play the game was sneak peaks or the occasional actual casual player. I went to my locals for "hobby league" as in one of the most casual forms of playing besides going round to a friends but nope literally everyone would be running strong meta decks eg alabaz structure deck or tearelements not allowing anyone to play the game.
One of my favorite decks is time thieves (with a strangle lanius and shade brigadine package) because time thief redoers gimick of snatching the top card of the opponents deck was unique combine that with the trap cards retrograde, flyback and the quickplay spell xyz import is neat. The best end board ive managed with it is a redoer with a shade brigadine, a set imperm and retrograde and an arc rebellion xyz dragon with raiders knight as its material. Had this been right at the very start of the xyz era it might have been half decent.

I was a comp player back around inception. I went to several regional and qualifying tournaments, etc. When i came back to ygo(to master duel, i still haven't gotten back into paper) it took me likely around a month to regain the grasp of the game and another month at least to START building the required familiarity to be competitive again. I'm presently a diamond ranked player, former regional competitor, and i felt helpless simply RELEARNING a game i had played almost professionally in the past over the course of 20 years.
When i last played paper ygo, i lost at my first table in Texas regional qualifiers to Inzektors (i was playing XX-Saber) as the brand new deck that was hitting. The speed and efficiency in which i lost was mind boggling to me at the time. Now, in master duel, the difference between my old experience and my new experience is probably 10x the difference compared to when i first lost to inzektors almost 15 years ago... the game requires so much. Time. Comprehension. Experience. Patience. Money. More money. More time. A PhD in game theory, and a willingness to abandon everything you enjoy in pursuit of victory.

A good addition into MD would had been a fully fleshed out solo training enviroment, which you can modell the deck which the AI shall use and also the ability to build a deck with cards you either already own or not own, then during the duel with the AI, the game should show and teach different plays and combolines, analyzed from the current drawn hand you have. This would had helped immense for new players especially but also for those which want to learn new deckplays.

  • @Silverphantom24

I think the issue is that new players feel like they need to learn every single mechanic from the start, you wouldn't expect someone to learn or master every colour combination in MTG from the start would you. Or every clan in Cardfight Vanguard. Focus on what you want to play or what summon mechanic and ease yourself into the gameplay rather than dive in head first.

I learned Yugioh through Master Duel on release. Took me a few weeks of playing Starry Knight, but I got through it because I wanted to learn. Rarran isn't quite the standard for a new player, since he's said on several occasions (even during his second try) stuff like "you expect me to read my cards?" and to me it seems like he didn't want to learn the game - he wanted to try the game. Not putting that against him, I sat in on his yugioh streams and they were pretty fun, I'm just saying that Yugioh requires a lot more involvement with your own and your opponent's card text.
It is shitty for new players, especially against combo and trap decks the first few times you run into them, since you have no idea what their gameplan is, or even that they may have choke points. That kind of stuff is the biggest wall to get over. But if you don't care to read effects you'll never draw connections between cards nor learn how to simplify card effects for yourself so you can eventually keep up.
Some of the stuff like hard and soft once-per-turns or timing is both confusing and kinda cool. It's niche, but when it comes up it does feel dope.
Absolutely can't imagine learning it not through digital though. That would cause way too much chaos to even learn anything.

I learned the game myself as well, but I actually played a gba game and then a ds game to familiarize myself with basic rules and easy plays first. It’s been about 2 months since I started playing ygo and I’m hares stuck in diamond with my best being master 5 and then tilt into diamond 4. The most complicated deck I can play is world chalice link spam and sylvan rikka with no spells. I’m also completely free to play so I don’t have the best cards. I pushed to master with the rikka deck and chain burn. I like this game but I cannot get any of my friends into it because they read ghost belle or the ruling on negates and dip right there. At the end of the day, a complicating hard to get into game with and gotcha elements is definitely a bad combo.

I've played Yu-gi-Oh on and off for years and tbh I'd recommend brand new players to Yu-Gi-Oh to play Legacy of the Duelist on Steam instead. It also has underwhelming tutorials but has a story mode to play through iconic duels of each anime in order which naturally increases complexity over time. If they can complete the entire campaign and still be enjoying Yu-Gi-Oh then they can 'graduate' to playing Master Duel.

I just started playing like 2 or 3 weeks ago and it's really not that bad. I mean... I'm a fast reader though lol. True, every card is like literally a novel, but the level of absolutely broken crap is much, much worse imo. I understand the common cards now and I can pick up what my opponent is going for even if it's some engine I've never seen before, but the game would just be much so much better if things like kashtira etc. were removed, imo.
Too many cards are actually just stupid, and you literally never see anything else on the ladder. I've been grinding the ladder w/ traptrix, which has been going well except for certain games where it actually just feels rigged. Opponent going first and popped off? No handtraps for you. Going first and need a starter / extender? Here, take both of your Nibiru's, ash, called by, etc. So many games are like that and it's actually just infuriating sometimes.

okay video, I still think playing the DS/3DS games are the best way to learn, and after that playing commonly played decks and cycling through every week so you understand what happening when someone else is playing, which as a new player is more important than knowing what you are doing, cause you can improve your skills with your deck but constantly going against something you have no baseline for might as well just have the opponent side be covered black on hope nothing happens

Only reason I managed to get into Master Duel when it came out was cuz I had past experience as a kid playing the DS games. Even then I had to put in a lot of effort to barely begin to understand everything. One of our friends had quite a bit of knowledge and I'd say he really helped me a lot on top of a bunch of content creators.
Either way the main thing that kept me around for a while was playing with friends. Once they got tired of the problems with Yugioh and stuff like that so I stopped.
Keep coming back every now and then when new support for decks I like comes out. The new RDA stuff was cool and the Amazoness stuff that was added a while back was neat to use on a sort of pet deck.

The point of Master Duel was to bring new players into both physical sides of the games, or if not, at least give them an official platform to play.
However, due to how awful the current state of the (main format) of the game is in, it’s damn near impossible to get into it easily. Granted this is why we HAVE retro formats and Duel Links but the problem is not everyone wants to play with more limited card pools, and duel links itself slowly approaching the current game’s awful game state.
Yugioh’s powercreep is a factor in what is killing it right now. The next step in powercreep is every deck is going to need to be able to set up a small-large board on the opponents first turn (Turn 0), or they can’t play the game. Ontop of the fact the TCG always gets the short end of the stick with rarity bumping cards, bad products, changing products for no reason for their TCG release, etc.

I agree with your point about custom retro formats acting as a tutorial, but they need to be mandatory to go through all of them to open ranked (after winning a number of duels to advance to the next one), of course it's not going to be every single banlist ever, but a select 5 or 7 that each represents a generation of yugioh's history (like goat and edison), like this new players can quickly get to playing pvp, and current players will finally get the retro formats they keep asking about, and i don't think it's wrong to make it mandatory to beat this challenge in order to start ranked, cause veteran players won't mind jumping through this small hurdle with each new account, and new players will more likely stay knowing that even if things get overwhelming later on they can just keep playing the older formats, which will slowely push them towards modren, heck konami can even make special retro format packs to encourage spending

A actually official format that isnt its own different game with different cards (ala terminal and speed duel) would be divine.
Even better if Konami pulls the sticks out of their ass and goes back to what they officially still claim in the tournament policy and rules page that the game is played per rulebook, instead of 800 pages of rulings and rulings about a card being a exception to other rulings out of which maybe 20-30 are actually by konami rulings instead of support FAQ or judge consensus.

It looks yugioh made one mistake that other card games didn't.
    They added too many mechanics.
Usually card games never adds new mechanics or a few new mechanics that are put in the game a far distance of time from each other.
That is why yugioh is so complicated.
They released so many new mechanics with practically no time in between them.
Instead of balancing and or added more to current mechanics, they added a new mechanic.
Yugioh keep adding new mechanics to attract more and more people to the game.
But in doing that, the game has become too complicated.
They must have realized that since no new mechanic has been added since links.
you can't call yugioh a children card game anymore since it has become too complicated for children to play properly.

Master duels is nearly perfect.... If you are already good at the game that is. 1
Thing I can point out that needs a major change is casual. It is flooded with players using meta decks or bots with ftk decks. It really needs its own banlist to mitigate this. The game is more than fair on getting you goid cards and solid decks, but never shows you how to use them in a meta sense. I am 1 of the players that tries to help new players get into the game. I usually ease them into it with decks balanced to take on their deck on even grounds. Once they get the hang of it, I duel them with more competitive decks, giving them a taste of the wall they need to be able to climb. Along with that, I tell them ways to improve their deck

Started to give the pokemon tcg a try and its so beginner friendly. On pokemon tcg live you Even get All meta Decks for free basically atm and they are all kinda simple and they are really cheap compared to yugioh if you buy them irl (like 200€ at Max for a big Event winning Deck). So yugioh will probably Lose all New players to pokemon at some point and even Veteran players, because you have to keep up Bad spent a lot to stay highly competetive, or even semi competetive. it's a shame that yugioh has a hard skill curve, because the player base is for the most part nice and welcoming. I've gotten into tcg's with magic and i've been playing since 2012 and i've met soooo many assholes in that game, like there was this new card shop that open up where i live and they banned most of the mtg players because how mean and rude they are one guy who worked there tried to get into mtg but quit and sold his cards, because of how mean the players are, in mtg arena I've gotten timed out soooo many times, because I beat them, and not like I was using toxic deck i was using aggro, self mill, and decks that had a fun gimmick to play. In yugioh i''ve had players who I just met buy me cards for my deck, i've seen other players in tournaments reinsure other players that it takes time to learn their decks and that they are still learning their decks as well. I've never seen those things in mtg tournaments. in master duel I've only been timed out a handful of times and i've put 147 hours into it.

Yugioh was my introduction to TCGs as a kid. I've been playing MD for a couple months now, using Dragonmaids and have gotten a handle on the rules, interactions and archetypes. I want to like Yu-Gi-Oh so badly, but I genuinely believe Yu-Gi-Oh is generally horrible game design.
Resource management is trivial. You can lose on turn 0 (this is not a rare occurrence). I think archetypes remove player agency and creativity in the deck building process. Interactions are super lopsided, especially with an importance being placed on hand traps such Ash Blossom or Maxx 'C' (needing these cards also removes 4-6 card slots from any deck which further strips agency from the players).
And my biggest pet peeve in MD is having to sit through 10-15 minute long turns from my opponent, and I'm very aware there isn't anything I can do to stop their field of boss monsters. If I could concede without surrendering my points from whatever cards I did manage to play, it wouldn't be so annoying. I could just start the next match right away.
I think Magic the Gathering is the greatest card game in the world. At the very least, it's more fun than Yugioh. I understand someone defending their likeness for Yugioh, but I think it's a stretch to say it's a good game.

I think two styles of game that would work for teaching people how to play the full card game though would be 1. A roguelike deckbuilder, 2. A Sacred Cards/Reshef style game with the mechanics that allowed progression from weaker to stronger cards as they were made familiar with the mechanics via deck cost and duelist level, except using the normal ruleset (and with more content so it's not as tedious).

    The game sucks to play
    First turn kills
Long summoning chains that take up way too much time on say master duel or edopro
Im sorry nobody wants to watch you summon for 5 minutes straight
The tcg effectively only allows for play of certain decks by virtue of power creep
Its not only old decks like blue eyes
But brand new decks are just unplayable, they lose first turn say g golem or war rock
Its really just sad like the game has no player choice beyond just play tier 0 strat or lose, it's a really boring and stale way of encourging new set sales
Also card design, it's just faster and faster versions of the same deck style that yusei played yknow kinda weak extenders leading into big extra deck monster
Even when they try more unique deck ideas ig pendulum or link
It just devolves into lol summon more card rather then actually utilizing the mechanic like co linking or using the arrow effects
    Its a bloody joke
Same with xyz some cards dont even require removing a overlay unit as to utitze the effect
The game also lacks any form of media or game outside of just the card game at least these days which makes it hard to like
Btw long term enjoyment with yugioh is hard, cause decks come and go like flies drop
Meaning hard to stay attached to anyone deck
And pricing is a issue, its like 100 dollars or more for a actually viable deck that can win games even at a local card shop
And despite spending that much money, your deck will get power crept out of relevance or just outright put on the komani banlist which mostly everyone uses so if you wanna actually play in real life enjoy spending hundreds of dollars every month

And despite spending that much money, your deck will get power crept out of relevance or just outright put on the komani banlist which mostly everyone uses so if you wanna actually play in real life enjoy spending hundreds of dollars every month.
